NO, it is not a good idea.
While it is indeed possible to apply armor to Shadowmere, once armored she is in danger of vanishing from the game world. In this scenario, she will not reappear at Fort Farragut (normally, if Shadowmere wanders off, one can find her at the Fort - but not if she's armored).

One easy way to remedy this problem is to observe Shadowmere after fast-traveling. Once you arrive, if you see Shadowmere walking off into the sunset, quickly get on the horse. Then dismount. Shadowmere will no longer be wandering off and will stay put.

I personally have had no problem with armor glitches. Seeing as Shadowmere is in fact unkillable the idea of getting armor only for the looks is debatable

Risk of shadowmere never coming back to you VS showing off your horse to all the NPCs

It would look very cool in elven armor.

No shadowmere looks gay in armor.

However, he looks even worse in elven armor. Of course, i am a black metal freak, so eveerything has to be black and silver. Except Shadowmere. but i never use her anyways

All I'm saying is that it is a known glitch. I won't recommend anything thaty may jack your game. What you do is your own choice, and thus your own concequences.

Is the glitch fixed in the Unofficial Oblivion Patch mod?

I don't think she needs armor, but I don't know how to get it off. I try to keep her away from fights anyways because she causes more problems than she helps, like every other companion.

He doesn't need armor. He's essential.
