Go in the dungeon doors and down the hole/tunnel. It sometimes seems like you cannot get higher up the mountain towrds the tower, but each time there is another dungeon to pass through and you will get higher up: consult your map often. Jumping up the mountainside doesn't work and you may get 'stuck' in a rock crack forever!

Eh? If you are talking about the Bruma Gate that ypou take Burd in with you, this has to be one of the easiest gates. Just a simple long winding path (although well equipped with traps, mines, turrets and Daedra) leads you to the door to the Sigil Tower. In this respect it is not unlike Kvatch. The guards and Burd are tough, but you may need to cast Heal Other on them a time or two. Once inside the tower it is easier than Kvatch in the sense that there isn't an elevator. Just keep winding your way upwards, and either lockpick your way into the Sigillium Sanguis or unlock the door with the key from the corpse of the Sigil Keeper. As my latest char is an assassin with great security skills, she lockpicked. Then grab the stone.

Of course, if you mean Bruma Great Gate, it's a whole different ball game as you race against the clock, for this you need to run like hell, avoid time consuming fights, and for that reason either have good Illusion skills or loads of potions/Chameleon items. You can shave the time down no end if you also have high Acrobatics, a CE water walking item of clothing, and some Fire Resist potions. Yes, I did mean water walking. Will say no more...

read the topic ginny

I recall that the Anvil gate indeed had a lot of caverns to pass through. the entrance to the first cavern was ridicously close to the gate where you enter Oblivion.

i hardly ever took the road they said to take, in one case i was on a broken bridge way hg up, the main tower just across a river of lave, i rested, and jumped, and got out wuick, then made my way around to the door, i do this in most gates

Maybe it's random?

Because I just did it, and I had no caverns, just a long but fairly open and straightforward path. There was a broken bridge near the start.

Are you sure we are talking of the same gate? I don't remember the contents, but that's NOT the gate on the slopes on your way from Anvil gate to the Anvil Castle along the walls, but the gate north of Anvil, which destroys a wayshrine.
Same with Leyawinn, not the scary big gate on the isle by the river watch house, but the one by the road, east from the eastern gate.
There once was a Prince named Mehrunes
Whose buttocks sounded sonorous tunes
‘Twas an odiferous song
People sang before long
They had enough of his full crescent moons.
