Technically the strongest blade damage comes from Umbra. Goldbrand, just a notch weaker as a blade, adds 22 or so fire damage, getting to the top in overall damage. But both are put to shame by any rusty iron dagger with 'Elemental' poison applied to it.

Personally on daily basis I use a generic elven shortsword, fast, lightweight, good backstab, does the job of applying poison well. In case the enemy disarms me of the elven shortsword, I introduce them to Goldbrand.

Goldbrand is a personal favourite of mine too, but of course for a noob it's a fair way away as you have to be level 20 and above to do the Boethiah quest and get it. Whereas (if you're feeling lucky) you can have a go at getting Umbra just as soon as you like.

For a starting char, if you at least do the first few bits of the MQ you have the chance to get some decent Blades Akaviri katanas/dai-katanas, which you can then enchant with Sigil Stones if your persevere and close some Oblivion Gates.

Unfortunately, the baddies you encounter in your travels do not start to drop elven, glass, ebony and Daedric goodies until you progress in level.

When you are fresh out of the prison sewers and wander about in the imperial city, be sure to do the Unfair Competition quest. Go around and talk to the shopkeepers in the Market District and you will get it. The quest gives you Debaser (drain willpower & endurance), which is a decent sword to begin your adventuring career with.

When you go to Weynon Priory to look for Jauffre, visit Chorrol nearby. Go to the Grey Mare tavern and get The Killing Field quest from a guy who has a problem at his farm. That quest will give you Chillrend, a very good blade with frost damage & weakness to frost.

I'd suggest waiting with Chillrend till you decide to continue with the Main Quest. It's levelled and Flame Atronachs are vulnerable to frost.

I consider Goldbrand to be the best sword in the game. Of course Umbra is also a nice sword, but more situational than Goldbrand.

I currently use a Daedric long sword enchanted with the transcendent stone that has absorb health for 25 points per strike. I have chests full of weapons from various levels, but I find this one the best for my everyday adventuring.

Or you can just make your own when you gain access to a the arcane university. I use a ebony longsword enchanted with soul trap 2 second, fire, frost and shock damage 15 each for 1 second. It has 21 uses before running out of juice. Add a poison of you choice for extra damage.

Yeah enchanting your own weapons could definitely be the best choice. Too bad I think Daedric longswords look stupid. Goldbrand looks cool. 8)

I've been using the quest item the Honourblade of Chorrol. It's got a weight of zero because it's a quest item and it always seems to have a damage rating that's one higher than ebony swords. It's not magic so I can repair it myself. Also, and I didn't see this as a huge advantage until recently, but it can't be taken from you, either. Without revealing too much, there comes a time when you may have your stuff taken away from you, but because I still had that bad boy I was able to throw down with the best of them. My guy specializes in bladed weapons, so even without his armor and shield he was still a maniac with that sword in his hands.

Can you enchant it too? That would be awesome.

I almost prefer it not being enchanted. My armorer skill isn't good enough to repair magic weapons and I beat the crap out of my equipment and have to fix it in dungeons and in the mountains and odd places like that. Plus, I hate to count stuff so I don't like to use items with "charges" because I know I'll try to avoid fights just to save charges. And you never feel bad about selling off a perfectly good nonmagic weapon the second a new one comes along. The only nonmagic weapon I keep around is the Grey Prince's elven longsword. I felt so bad about the way he died that I purposely didn't sell his stuff. It's sitting in a trunk in my apartment in the Imperial City. It has sentimental value because both he and I killed lots of stuff with that sword.

I get all sniffy over anything that kills people.

Ditto. Also the Chorrol blade counts as magic in terms of being able to kill ghosts.

I personally get fed up with Magic Weapons because they run out of juice so quickly. The "no more charge" message so annoys me. I'd rather have just a great blade.

I never stopped and thought about this. I used to carry around a silver shortsword just to deal with the occasional ectoplasmic creature. Somewhere along the line, I lost it and I never stopped to think about the fact that I could still clean up ghosts and will-o-the-wisps.
