Ditto. Perhaps it's just a matter of perspective, but I've always thought we Americans talk incredibly slowly, compared to other English-speaking folks I've met or heard. I imagine we must sound drunk all the time or borderline retarded.
Actually I have a friend from Bavaria, and he says we talk incredibly fast, sometimes so fast he can't even understand us.
Yet, we probably do sound borderline
stupid :P

Ahem. Let's be more careful with our adjectives. Some members might feel offended by your choices, you too.

And linguistically, I believe the general understanding (ie, perception) is that "Northerners" talk very fast and "Southerns" talk very slow. Which is true scientifically, by a few seconds, but for different reasons. We northern Americans talk over each other a lot more than down south as well. But that's a social issue. ;)

Have you seen some of the stuff on TV right now (don't answer that I know you haven't :P)? Winners and Losers is a horrible Friends type rip-off and City Homicide in no way matches shows like NCIS. Crocodile Dundee was a good movie though, and Kangaroo Jack was about two Americans in Australia and is a 2003 American Comedy Film.

I lived out west for a couple years and had four roommates, one from an inner city mexican border state area, another from India, one from a second-generation Mexican-American family and lastly a guy from Louisiana. The first three always said I talked too slow and tended to subtract the ends of words (particularly words that end with -er) and add A's instead (tractor = tracta, soccer = socca, or Mainer = Maina [think an 'ah' sound]), but the Louisianian said I sounded like someone from his family

I find so many things about this amusing that I have to dwell on it a moment. First, I have worked extensively with "them," particularly troubled "thems," for years and I found the experience incredibly rewarding. And, despite the occasional friction (ranging from not wanting to go to bed to punching me in the face because they were bored), I have a great deal of respect for "them."

Second, if you were just trying to change my language without censoring my meaning (which, in my opinion, is like trying to gloss over the fact that "they" exist, as if there's something unpleasant or profane about "them"), then "borderline" should have been changed to "incredibly." Because I didn't mean "borderline stupid," I meant a great deal above and beyond merely stupid. I meant, well, "them." So the only thing I regret is my vagueness; I should've used the qualifier "mentally" beforehand.

Third, I might use a different word when you guys can settle on something. I don't attach negative connotations to this word you don't like so much, because it is, in fact, supposed to be the politically correct term. Before this word, "they" were called idiots. But when this replacement also became attached with perjorative connotations, the politically correct choice was changed and changed again and again. Handicapped, special, disabled, mentally challenged, persons with disabilities, persons with challenges, and the list goes on and on. Use any of these terms long enough, and they will gain a perjorative connotation. The solution, then, is not to change our language, but to maintain respect and understanding of "them," so that when someone like me refers to "them" in a reasonable, honest way in the course of conversation, it's not assumed that I trying to belittle or degrade "them" by referencing their existence in a way that's not the flavor of the month.

In short, if people don't like me for using that word, then let them not like me. That word is not profanity, it's merely (wrongfully) perceived as politically incorrect. It's your hangup, not mine. Again, I'm simply amused by all this, not angry. Sometimes that doesn't translate well.

There are shorter or more aptly descriptive words than that to use without offending those of us that live with or are related to mentally challenged individuals

If you were in you're own house, fine, but this is god's country, oops, I mean this is a public place and I don't care what you think, you're using it because of its impact compared to just stupid (Shock value and magnitudes higher in other terms).

Have at least some respect for those that might find this subject sensitive, I don't use the public water fountain as a toilet, you shouldn't either

I hope this isn't getting out of hand, if it doesn't turn around than I might have to ask for this thread to be locked.

Please, can we get back onto a friendlier topic.

I met some really nice Canadians while on Holiday once, and I know Canadians who live in Australia now. So, from my experience, I like Canadians :D.

Alright, how about we talk 'bout slang terms (keep it PC please), and I'll start out with the slang term for cool/awesome in my area for the last couple of years has been, Mint (Guy1:"<insert band name> is coming to town"Guy2:"Mint" or "His new car is so Mint"). There's another slang used for cool, but it would be censored so I won't post it.

This will hopefully be worth a few laughs

I hope no-one is offended by this, but I find it difficult to distinguish between a Canadian accent and an American accent? I know there are a variety of accents and twangs across both countries but I can't for the love of god tell the difference between. And the same goes for Aussies and Kiwis, which I think came up earlier, although not to the same extent.

I can't tell the difference between some Canadians and Americans, either, so don't feel bad, Marco. In fact, a lot of people don't even realize that I have a dialect different from New Yorkers until they know me long enough - then I always get the, "Hey, Avron, you say that real funny!" comments.

The thing is a lot of factors go into accents: socioeconomics, age, upbringing, and region where you grew up (not live). If you're interested in listening to different types of accents, check out George Mason University's Speech Accent Archive. It's mostly focused on people who know English as a second language, and you might have to know a little of the International Phonetic Alphabet to really appreciate it, but there are lots of examples from across America and Canada - and lots of places in Europe, too! It's really neat. :)

I never realized that Minnesota had an accent until I moved to Texas and people down here told me i talked funny. Now, after 7 years of living here, I now have a mixed accent that has shifted to a more Texan accent. I speak with a Texas's drawl but still enunciate my vowels. Accents are such an interesting thing.
