I was thinking of Gnisis (with Baladas Demnevanni) but after poking around there a little more it seems not so nice after all. It's too small, for one. And it's a mining town. Not much going on.
personally, i'd live in Skingrad, (or Bruma as I am a Nord) but mainly Skingrad because they have best places to sell things, I don't have a high mercantile skill. and I like their houses.

Now Aldruhn. That is a cool city.
I live in Balmora right now, had a house in Ald'ruhn but I ran out of space.
I'll probably download a house mod soon.

...they had to dumb it down for the Game Console users...
Actually, there are lots of rumors why it wasn't as good. People complain if it is to different, but they'd complain if it was to similar. From what I could tell, alot of the changes were made, because they were complaints from MW players when it first came out.
You do know that Morrowind came out for the Xbox as well, right?:P
The storyline in Oblivion didn't change much, that was the problem. There wasn't much evolution.
1- It starts.
2- Five things really happen.
3- It ends.
I'm actually a newbie of sorts to the Elder Scrolls game, Oblivion being my first. While the game struck me as absolutely amazing, I was a bit disappointed by the main quests. I think the story was interesting, but it was a bit short; it was only made long by the Aid For Bruma quests. I mean, I'm used to playing games that I can beat, 100%, in about two days, and I felt it was too short. I think when there's more to do joining a guild, there's something wrong.
Oh, and I'd live in either Chorrol, Skingrad, or Bruma. I haven't really decided out of those three. In-game I always choose Skingrad because of the house, but otherwise.. dunno.
hmmmm.... In real life I would still live in Anvil
Once I get to lvl 20-some and beat the main quest, I'll move to Mournhold. Then I'll live there until like level 25 or 27 and then move to Solstheim. I'll probably stay there.
until then, I'm probably going to download that cool tower-near-ebonhart mod.

I've always felt anvil was home too. It's easy to get around. I like the Serpents Wake ship. I can fast travel to the dock and bam, I'm right at home. (Only wish the blood would go away after awhile, but I've gotten use to it )
And I have the pirates from smuggler's cave who go out for me so I have to go over there every week anyway.
And if I want to sell off a bunch of stuff the merchant is at the end of my dock, so it's a short trip.
My opinion for the reason behind the less-than-awesome plot for Oblivion is that you're not the hero, like you were in Morrowind. Martin's the hero and you just spend the whole game performing tasks he's delegated to you.
