Oblivion Ubuntu help

Post by Deas Arain »

I apologize if this has been answered before on this site, but I can't fix it myself or find any information on it.

After reading this walkthrough, I manage to get Oblivion to run... Sort of.

(Remove the space between between the '.' and 'us'.)

The font is replaced with brown blocky shapes and some images are replaced with large white boxes. After starting a new game, the movie runs fine, but the problem comes up on the character creation screen too.

I don't know whats causing this. I doubt it has anything to do with my system specs, as I've run Oblivion before on this computer but it was running on Windows at the time and now I'm using the latest version of Ubuntu. I'm also using Wine 1.2.2. I'm using the Game of the Year Edition but I've not installed the expansions yet.

Any ideas?

(Also, I love this site c:)

I'd say to re-install. The text files might have been placed in the wrong directory by Wine, and unless you are good with oblivion file organizing (or modding) then I would say to just re-install. If the problem is indeed Linux related, I can't help, as I'm only experienced with Windows and Mac.

How's that video driver in your emulator? I'm 99% sure that's a video plugin disliking anything with an alpha channel. I have this happen a lot when emulating N64 stuff, some video plugins will allow one texture effect but not other ones. Especially alpha showing up as opaque.

I'm leaning on this since it seems the more likely (and easier xD).

After looking for font related files, I don't see anything immediately obvious. Should they be in the Data folder in the Oblivion directory?

Mentioning looking for the Font files was a blunder of mine, they should be in the compressed BSA for textures... Otherwise, if uninstalling doesn't work, then I agree completely with kris, as some systems can have problems with alpha channels. If everything else is working besides text, then the BSA was probably corrupted or something of that nature during Wine's installment.

Well, I'll go ahead and re-install to see if that changes anything. I may have messed up the Oblivion.ini file somehow or something got corrupted.

Thanks for the advice, you two. I'll post later with my results. ;3

So after reinstalling, the problem hasn't resolved itself.

HOWEVER! I suddenly remembered that I used Oldblivion to run the game when I was using Windows. I downloaded it and ran it, but it pops up the standard 'serious error, sorry bro' message. Reading around, it doesn't seem to work in Wine.

So after playing with the settings and whatnot for a bit, I'm back for more.

Edit: Just realized this was a double post, too. Oops....

I know I am a bit late coming into this, but I'll attempt to see if I can help.

Firstly, what exactly are the speccs of your system, videocard, processor, etc. Wine has issues with certain things. Secondly, update to Wine 1.3 - it fixes a lot of these issues. Do other graphical games, such as Morrowind or similar have issues in wine? Install winetricks and make sure .net 1.1 and 2.0 are installed - it may fix your oldbivion error.
