Re: Hip-Hop

Post by The Tourist »

Okay, seeing as we're doing lists, here's some artists and tracks that define the genre for me. And seeing as this is a hip-hop/rap thread, the first three feature a lot of industrial language. Anyone who clicks through should be a fan already (thus heard it all before), or someone who isn't easy to offend. If you are? Choose not to be.

Ice Cube - just fierce
Da Lench Mob - with Ice Cube on top form
Das EFX - that track's an all time fave. Westcoast hardcore ftw..
Roots Manuva - best British hip-hop artist by a mile. that track's from their best album by far. mellower than his Yank counterparts of the '90's, but savvy as hell, and more musical.
Tupac - some words of wisom from his first, best, album. too bad he didn't listen to more of his own advice.
Public Enemy

When it's good, I adore hip-hop/rap, and its various sub-genres. But a common theme with the above artists (PE and Manuva not included), is that after a strong, usually angry or defiant early/mid era, they lose their edge, repeat themselves, and become largely irrelevent. It's unique to those genres. It doesn't happen in electronica, indie, pop etc.

I've noticed Rakim's name popping up here a couple of times. Any die-hard fans like me? If you're looking for some serious lyrical quality, he's your man.

Hmm, I'm running low on artists to drop the names of now. Idris Elba? N*E*R*D? There's more that I can't think of right now.

DMX really has become underated. Problems w/ the law and "falling off" have held him down, but he is undeniably one of the most talented artist of the 90's, early 2000's. He is back in the studio and with a better head on his shoulder, i really look fwd to his new music.

Yelawolfs new album has some great records. He has a unique approach to his music and his sound is great. The single featuring Kid Rock is a banger!!! Great list sonixboom. Have you or anyone else downloaded Spotify yet? Great way to make playlists and listen to almost any artist/song...

I enjoy all of their music. Earl Sweatshirt needs to make his return. Their female DJ, SyD tHe Kid, has a group within OF called The Internet...they have projects released through OF's website...great music! MellowHypes album was killer though...Mike G also has great records, he makes really good chopped&screwed records as well (via his youtube page)

Assuming all the stuff Tyler's been saying is true, Earl's going to be gone until 2015, and then he might not want to give the group another go. I wouldn't hope for a comeback any time soon.

Complex Magazine had a story about Earls whereabouts (http://www.complex.com/music/2011/04/co ... sweatshirt)

Who knows when he will be coming back. They are all making good music, and really setting the example for the new business model in the music industry, all about the DIY aspect and really making history.
