Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
I recently downloaded Morrowind Graphics Extender and unpacked it to the Bethesda Softworks/Morrowind directory just like it says at TESNexus. Now, whenever I click the Morrowind launcher the game crashes and a message box tells me "This application has failed to start because d3dx9_30.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem." I have already re-installed Morrowind and MGE, and this error still occurs. I know that this has something to do with MGE, because I can start up Morrowind just fine when MGE is not in my directory. Has anyone else had this problem?

d3dx9_30.dll is a DirectX file. Update your DirectX, it should fix the problem. It's also possible to download the single dll, but I suggest you get the whole package. The latest package should be

I second that. I had that EXACT same problem. I downloaded an updated version of DX9 (NOT REDLIST i had MAJOR issues with that) and it worked. Download the self installer from microsoft's site and youll be good to go after a restart.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
A bit of a necro, but it seems pointless to create a new thread, so here goes.
I recently got the idea to install morrowind (GOTY) on my laptop, suprise suprise, It wouldn't run. I'm running Windows 7, the laptop has an AMD II p340 dual core procesor and a ATI radeon HD 4200 graphics card (according to my diagnostic program). Basically whenever I started a game I'd get errors messages about missing files. Checked my morrowind.ini to see if all bsa archives were registered, checked for duplicate ini files, nothing to be found. Software seemed to be ok, so I thought it must be the hardware, I installed MGE in a last bid to get the game to run, and it now does in fact run, only I'm getting all these weird effects instead of what should be there. Basically, it turns me and Jiub into yellow transparent stuff, and I have no idea how to fix it. I hope someone can help me with this, because I didn't go through all this trouble to not play morrowind.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
I'd say, don't mind about the necro.
I wonder what files were missing? Were they DirectX = Windows / System files, or Morrowind files? Do you get Morrowind warnings when you start the game?
There's another thread http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=19904, with a person having some strange visual occurences (second last post right now). In case you don't get it running well with procedures below, perhaps you could provide a screenshot or two?
Things you could do:
1. re-install your DirectX
2. update your video card drivers
3. check your Morrowind installation according to http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/. Add any of the necessary ones that may be missing.
4. it's never a bad idea or time to defrag and optimize your HDD, I use Auslogics Disk Defrag, http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/di ... /download/
5. a somewhat disputed action is to use some registry tool to check and fix things. I support it, and I use Free Window Registry Repair regularly, http://www.regsofts.com/free_registry_r ... repair.htm.
Let's hope you get it working like it should.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
The fist time I tried it said models were missing, so I thought it was the morrowind.ini, after trying everything possible I still got the errors, so I assumed that wasn't the problem and that my laptop was. So I installed MGE, hoping that would help, and after getting the right directx libraries I got it to run, only with the weird graphics.
I rechecked everything you said, still no improvement. I can't make a screenshot because MGE has that option grayed out for some reason and adding it to the ini doesn't work, so I took a picture of my screen instead.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
About screenshots: open MGEgui in your Morrowind directory, go to > Input > Launch Macro Editor > select the key PS ( Print Screen) > Save.
Now it should work; my settings in Morrowind.ini are:
Screen Shot Enable=0
Screen Shot Base Name=ScreenShot
Screen Shot Index=0
When I take a screenshot, Morrowind window tells me "it is unabled" but MGE text tells me it was "succesfull".

Very, very sorry about the delay, satan_n_stuff: I didn't answer you directly, then I must have deleted the notification and remembered the whole thing only now, by Sadachbia's post. Sorry, that is, I am.
Models most probably refer to .nif files. As far as I have understood, you don't have any mods installed? If you don't have [those that could have overwritten some original ones], most likely your installation has failed to start with ---- for some reason. The only thing that helps is a full uninstallation, be careful to delete everything, I recommend using Revo Uninstaller, http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uni ... nload.html, I've used it for some years, the free version... and note, I don't get anything for promoting it!
Sometimes installations fail, that's it, and although programs are built to check themselves and give an announcement if something went wrong, we still live in a quite imperfect world, meaning they don't always do it.
Hope you finally get it running. If you find out something, or get ideas, please share them.
Best of all.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
Terribly sorry for the late reply, but I kind of gave up a few days after my last post, I'm gonna give it a try again today. I was actually running some mods but I made sure all the files were there first. I'm gonna try a full reinstall, backup my mod list so I'll know which ones to install if it works. ( I don't really wanna lose this save. )
Anyway, I'll let you know.
Edit: Success!!! And now I'm off to make a great big mess of my Data Files folder.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
It works perfectly now, had a bit of a problem with a clothing mod that kept getting corrupt whenever I moved the archive to my laptop, but it works now. ( I think I might need a new USB stick though. )
Now to get an expansion for MCA so I don't have to constantly babysit the companions and maybe some more clothing mods and I'm set.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
Greetings!
Maybe you would like to help me too?!?
I´m now working for a very long day getting MGE started and I managed to fix some problems but after some errors I am stuck at that point:
"One or more of MGE´s files appear to be missing. Please reinstall."
Well, not to mention, that reinstalling doesn´t solve the problem. Thank you windows!
I would be thankfull for any hint, even not so common ones!
What I have installed and or checked by now and the hardware:
Laptop: HP Pavillion 2600 with NVIDIA GeForce 5000 somewhat (that´s for sure not the problem)
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit, Service pack 2
.NET Frameworks 4.0
Direct X9.0c (just installed cause required and the system was set up one week ago)
Visual C++ 2005 and Visual C++2008
d3dx9_30.dll loaded and pasted cause another error wanted me to do
Morrowind incl. Tribunal and Bloodmoon from the GOTY Edition DVD, patched to 1.6
Starting as administrator doesn´t change anything, compatibility modes neither.
Morrowind.exe is running without problems as long as the d3d8.dll and the dinput8.dll are removed.
MGE is version 3.8.0.0
So any ideas?
Thanks a lot and Greetings
PS.: For any mistakes in spelling or grammar please excuse, I´m not a native speaker.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
First of all, welcome to the Forum, HekatonTrn. Go say Hi in Welcomes and Goodbyes, it's recommendable - you'll probably understand why when you've done it.
Also thanks for the information you give, hardware and all... splendid!
This may sound stupid but: You've started MGE from MGEgui.exe? Does it give any filenames?
I'm a bit suspicious about two things you mention:
1. You've updated Morrowind GOTY to 1.6 --- GOTY is 1.6, and the patch won't install
2. You've installed DirectX9.0c to Vista --- Vista is DirectX10, it contains DirectX9, and going down in DirectX is NOT double click on setup.exe, and pressing ok...
Both cases are either "nothing happened" or "something fishy". As it seems, I don't think your problem is with MGE. I think you have a basic installation problem, or maybe a problem in the registry.
Best wishes, give more info if you want to.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
Thanks for the fast answer!
Just said hello as you recommended.
Well, of course I started the MGE from the exe file and it really doesn´t give any hint! That´s the main reason I´m posting here because I searched the net for any answers and nothing was realy conclusive. By now I always managed to get programs worked, cause somehow there´s always a guy who had the same problem before (kind of frightening!)
I updated MW because the version number showed 1.2 something. I first installed only MW without the expansion just because I didn´t want to have this nasty guy attacking me while sleeping outside (tribunal, you know what I mean). So I updated it. That didn´t work anyway so I installed tribunal and bloodmoon (both GOTY). My save from before is now gone (not too bad) but the update worked... ?!?
Do you think it would help reinstalling MW and the rest?
There were no problems in installing directx9.0c. I mean normaly I would get some message that a newer directx is installed, wouldn´t I?
I will install version 10 right now, if it´s part of vista anyway that won´t get me into trouble.
But if that´s the clue I would feel just a little bit stupid!
"something fishy" is basicaly the right way to describe what uses to happen to my PCs for my whole life. So I set them up usualy at least once a year...

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
Now, this time the answer didn't come that fast... been busy with work:
and
. Good for the money, bad for own things!
MGE is a very stable package, problems are very limited. That's why you don't find many questions or answers, not in this Forum, nor other places.
Do you have a dedicated or integrated video card? An integrated one could be a problem. Just to tell you, you may already know this, Vista + laptop has in many cases proven to be a death trap to both Morrowind and Oblivion - it's good you get it running... there are many who never made it that far.
One thing to try could be an older version of MGE. Once upon a time, MGE eased on requirements... with later versions it has increased on them. http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/m ... =Downloads --- This could be a 10 min job to check?
Otherwise, I'm bound to believe that your multiple installations may have caused a problem: first you install Morrowind, then you update it, then you install Tribunal + Bloodmoon (this mess up applies especially if you have some mods installed). But anyway, something may have gone wrong along the way.
In case the older version of MGE doesn't solve it, I would at least personally make a complete uninstall + reinstall. And even more...
1. Uninstall Morrowind, and manually check there is no Bethesda or Morrowind folder, and delete Morrowind.ini from Documents and Settings.
2. Defrag your HDD, and preferably optimize it. I use Auslogics Disk Defrag, http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/.
3. I also recommend a registry cleanup / fix BUT THIS HAS BEEN DISPUTED ABOUT EVEN IN THIS FORUM; I've used Free Window Registry Repair for some years without problems, http://www.regsofts.com/free_registry_r ... repair.htm.
After that, install according to http://morrowind2009.wordpress.com/.
I'd say this is about as near perfection as we can get.
Waiting for good news, best of luck.

Re: Problem with Morrowind Graphics Extender
I, too, am sorry to Necrobump but I'm having quite a bit of trouble here. It seems as though MGE has overruled my Morrowind and won't let it work anymore.
It's been ages since I started Morrowind, only did it to see how it would run, but couldn't run any MWE mods because the game would refuse to load via MWE due to me playing on Vista. Since then I've swapped to W7 64bit.
I don't plan to use the 'main' parts of MGE (the graphics, old laptop, you see), but I decided to install it so that I could run the Script Extender, MW Enhanced, and the FPS Optimiser all in conjunction (MWSE runs as a part of MGE, from which I would boot MWE, which launches Morrowind).
Prior to this, I was able to get Morrowind to start through its own launcher, through MWSE, and through MW enhanced (good, it couldn't do that on Vista).
So, I downloaded MGE and tried to install. I received an error, something about not finding 'dxd3_30.dll' (I BELIEVE that was the dll in question), so I put the install on hold and downloaded a DX9 package from after August of the specified year (the one I got was from 2K10, which is well up to date compared to what MGE asked for) and put the relevant dll in my System32 folder.
So, I tried the MGE installer as per normal. Again, same problem, so I just thought I wouldn't bother and would find an alternative at a later date when I needed MWSE (probably won't need it for my first play).
So, just to confirm all over again, I tried to launch MW Enhanced. It failed to bring up the normal grey GUI boxes, said it had an issue with MGE - again, a dll one, however I believe this error message was SOMEWHAT different. So, I downloaded a registry / dll cleanup tool, ran it.
Now I launched the MWE GUI again, yup, got the options this time, clicked 'Launch Morrowind' and got the Morrowind Launcher (Play, Options, Data Files, etc.). I clicked Play and got a little box up in the corner as it always does just before MW goes fullscreen, then got this error message:
Could not open MGE\dinput.data for reading.
You need to run megui.exe at least once to create the save files
I click okay and I'm back to no Morrowind. I even try running it with MWSE and with just the launcher itself. Still no luck, same issue as above
When I try to run mgegui.exe, I get a 'MGEgui.exe has stopped working' message, and nothing happens. So I figure I have to install MGE then. I run the installer despite the problems, same problem with MGEgui.exe after install, same problem with the Morrowind launch.
By now I just decided to uninstall MGE entirely so I can just run Morrowind outside of MGE, so I uninstall it.
I still get that same error.
I no longer care about the benefits of MGE, I'll sort those at a later date if I wish so. All I want to do now is to play Morrowind. I fear an uninstall and reinstall won't solve it - this isn't Morrowind's fault but MGE's, as MGE is always automatically 'attaching' itself to Morrowind. Morrowind won't run independently, it's always trying to run VIA MGE.
How can I de-couple them from one another? As though I never downloaded MGE at all?
