So, I'm going to try something I've never tried before. A non combat based storyline based on an existing fictional story. It's going to use dice rolls and other factors. It most likely won't be excruciatingly scary, since the main point of scariness is being alone. There should be some tense moments, though. Bring several pairs of spare pants.
Now, I'm basically kind of murdering the story. I'm also having to put some guidelines down for the character. Basically, you must be at least mildly naive, and prone to fright. These are the main guidelines, but be aware of this - your character has done horrible, horrible things in the past, out of fear for their own life.
So! I'm not going to be posting any backstory besides what you remember. The rest will be revealed as time goes on. But for creating character's sake, the year is 1839, and you all are from England, and you have just awoken inside a dark, gloomy castle with faint shimmers of light coming in from dirty windows.
This is what the room looks like, in essence.
When you encounter an enemy in this RP, you cannot fight back. The only means of defense is stealth. You can hide from the monsters by crouching in the darkness.
However, hiding in the darkness and seeing monsters also will start to make your character a bit mentally unstable.
Every post you make with your character standing in darkness will make the character lose 1 sanity point - you regain sanity points by completing the puzzles and standing in well lit areas. Each puzzle completed returns your sanity to full. Each post standing in a well lit area (I will specify these) will return 1 sanity point to you.
If your sanity drops below 3 (maximum 10) then monsters will spot you very easily - if it drops to 1, you go completely insane, and your sanity can only be increased by your companions standing over you with a lantern. You will collapse on the ground, only able to crawl, and are a sitting duck for enemies.
You can survive being hit by a Grunt enemy three times, and by a Brute one time. After that, you're dead, no resurrection, no respawning. You can be hit if there is nowhere to run, your sanity is too low, or your die roll fails.
Each character has a lantern. When lit, this lantern will stop your sanity from draining in the darkness. However, enemies will also be attracted to the light. The lantern also has a finite amount of oil, but there will be oil containers scattered throughout the castle.
When an enemy spots you, I will specify potential hiding places. You can choose to hide in whichever one seems the most logical, then I will roll the corresponding die (Depending on whatever the circumstances are, this may be a d6, d10, or d20). Then I will roll a d8 for the monster (and add your sanity modifier if it is below 5). If it spots you, it hits, and you must run and find another hiding place!
Final note! You are all a group. You can explore an area individually, but when entering a transition area, you must all go through. Solve puzzles together and use your sense to figure out which places are the best hiding places.
Sorry if this is a bit confusing. I may simplify depending on circumstances.

Please try to RP sanity! As your sanity starts to drop, you may feel your palms getting sweaty, hands quivering, breathing increasing, vision warping slightly, whisps of shadow tendril reaching out for you.
Let's give this a shot! I hope it goes well, it may not. I apologize for the text wall guidelines.
