I would like to know what you think oblivion did right that other ES games or any RPG didn't

Thank you. I agree with the freedom aspect but i didnt like the barriers trapping you in the map. i would have prefered a system where if you go to far you character colapses and wakes up on the shore nearest to you

It never ends. Ever. When I don't feel like doing quests, I rampage. When I don't feel like rampaging, I do quests. When I don't feel like either of those, I screw arond with the CS or take cool screenshots.

A game called Risen has this. The map is smaller but the game is still enjoyable.LegoHouse wrote: i would have prefered a system where if you go to far you character colapses and wakes up on the shore nearest to you
Anyway, I agree with the freedom aspect as I never get tired of Cyrodiil. Just walking through the Great Forest and the Nibenay makes me excited. Also I like that there are lots of interesting races with their own culture and history.

Respawning enemies. too many games don't respawn enemies. Makes sure you always have a place to fight.

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
While there are a few locations in Oblivion that will do that to you, I actually find such scripted effects to give you LESS freedom. Nearly all games do it this way, but Oblivion doesn't throw invisible walls to stop you going into some corner (more or less), the only limit is your craftiness and acrobatics skill.LegoHouse wrote:Thank you. As far as the map goes... We PC players can go anywhere.. which leads me to one of the things Oblivion also got right: sooo mod-able. I think the game is good in itself, but it's also super cool that it can be expanded for extra awesome. And not just new meshes to replace stuff (this is what some games would let you do), but new items, land, etc.
hehehe most games I know respawn them if you re-enter the room.born2beagator wrote:Respawning enemies. too many games don't respawn enemies. Makes sure you always have a place to fight.

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
Compared to Morrowind, Oblivion gets almost everything right regarding the actual mechanics of the game...and regrettably is a step backwards in terms of story and game world. As for what Oblivion does that *NO* other game does? Well, not much, since there's always some other game that did everything -- just not everything all at once, and many of those games came after Oblivion.

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
Oblivion definitely got the game mechanics down right in terms of Combat and AI. While the combat is a little unbalanced, the actual freedom of being able to swing the way you do, no lock-on feature or intrusive health/mana bars (The little one you get is perfect) fits perfectly with the "freedom" motive Oblivion gives you.
And the AI, hoow it immerses you. No (well not many) pre-scripted movements. The Radiant AI kinda lets NPC's carry out a lists of tasks, which gives some variation in their behaviour, and makes them feel so much more real.
Yeah, that's what I think Bethesda did right.

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
The game overall is probably the most awesome rpg i had played.
There is only some minor stuff that i would like in the game, and what they should change... Here are the list.
Dark brotherhood could have more outposts... like theres a lot mages guild halls and fighters guild halls, there could be a lot dark brotherhood outposts, that would be cool.
More weapons and armor to choose, and more unique items.
Enchanted items could last forever.
They failed with level up'ing. There isnt much use of a level up, you just increase your attributes and that's all. They could make some skills and perks you could unlock with level up/ing.
Staves, they could make like battle staves, that you could use in battle, like hit enemy with a stave, not just to use its special ability. Stave could add bonus to attributes and stuff like that.
Also, they could make like combat skills, if mage use his magic, then warrior could use his special attacks and skills, that they could learn and choose, like mages do.
I could maybe think out more, but dont have anything in mind this moment, i will maybe edit this post later.

With the ammout of content, it just makes you want to come back more and more. Put hundreds of hours of work in it, and you still haven't gone through all the content. Modifications enduce that even more

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
The openness and the scenery. After playing Morrowind for a long time, then Oblivion came out. The scenery was breathtaking. That’s got to be number one on the list. Having so much freedom in a brilliantly design world.

Total immersion. Only the best games can do it. Looking out the window and seeing first light when it feels like everyone else just went to bed, 8 hours earlier. Then you wonder why you're so freaking hungry, and you need to use the toilet.

I usually try to hit the sack around 1:30 am to 2:30 am, though a few nights since I got the game I got particularly involved in it and went to bed near 4:00 am

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
What didn't Oblivion do right? The only reason I play any of the other ES games is to improve my experience when playing Oblivion (the lone exception being Morrowind). While there are many minor gripes, they can easily be overlooked. Not to mention the unofficial patches, which wouldn't have been possible without the CS.

Re: What did Oblivion get right?
The Combat. Unless you wish otherwise, it really feels like you are in an actual fight. You can feel the impact of every hit you give or take, you have to dodge or block attacks, the way the sheild obscures your veiw, it feels like an acutal battle.
The Stealth is great.
Freedom is excellent, the general rule is "If you can see it, you can go there."
One thing I would have preferred to be corrected is the ending.
Without giving anything away, the ending was cool and all but didnt give any closure to the quest line.
Receiving the Armour marked a point when the Main Quest officially ended, but there was no massive ceremony or any major event after the final battle which gave any kind of real "You did it, well done" feeling.
That, and the people of the world go from "OMG WE GUNNA DIE" to "YOU ARE HERO!" in about 3 in game hours. Nah, dissapointing for me.
