I know the point of stereotypes is that they are in most cases complete nonsense but after seeing this, ordinary Swedish Chef and Macho Salad I am really hoping that this one is true.

I'm getting serious once again, and perhaps only telling what most of you know... here I go again... ... but stereotypes do have many meanings, and they grow from many needs.

1. Xenophobia may be the worst source for stereotypes, and it relates to a need for defense in the human mind. "What you don't know [and fear], you name and define, in order to get a defined enemy.
2. Then we have contempt for a certain group. Almost as bad as the former.
3. And then we have humor based prejudices, like in Nordic countries: all Finns know how Swedes are, and Swedes know how Danes, Norwegians and Finns are... and finally we all know how all others are... since Norwegians and Danes know how Swedes and Finns are.



Not exhaustive, as my replies rarely are, and on the border to off-topic, as my replies so very often tend to be, but since the author of this topic seems to approve it, in my view, I will not ban myself.
