Re: Superbowl?
The super bowl is the biggest and grandest spectacle in American sport. The championship game in the National Football League

Re: Superbowl?
^ And not "traditional football" My first judgement about your is that you are porbably of european descent. The superbowl is the championship of American football, something completely different than "soccer" as we call it.

Well, imagine Chess and Rugby had babies with each other. One child would be named Curling. The other would be named American Football.Murcator wrote:Oooh, Poor rugby?

Re: Superbowl?
It's quite similar to Rugby, yes, more than British football. There's quite a few differences between the two though. I'd advise a couple of Youtube searches to see what it's like.Murcator wrote:Oooh, Poor rugby?

Re: Superbowl?
The Super Bowl is to football as the World Cup is to soccer. (Yes soccer.) However, because football is too cool for un-American communists and socialists, the teams that play to the super bowl are all American.

Only spme of them are fat, the ones whose job it is only to push other fat guys around. Most are incredibly athletic.Murcator wrote:Oh, I know they wear armour. It is similar to rugby, but with lots of pads and equipment, which actually can make the sport much more hard-hitting and violent than rugby. It also allows forward passing, unlike rugby. Like someone else suggested, YouTube videos could help.
And when things start to happen,

I don't get why it's called football if everyone uses their hands.

Even the big fat guys are incredibly muscular and incredibly athletic. There are guys who are 300lbs and can run the 40m dash faster than I canJpot wrote:Only spme of them are fat, the ones whose job it is only to push other fat guys around. Well, the US still insists on using Imperial measurements all the time, instead of symbolic purposes like most European countries. An American will probably correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's because they want to show their difference from Britain, which is why they also have their own variations on the English language.Murcator wrote:Oh, I thought they weren't used anymore?

Re: Superbowl?
not sure about the language thing, though my guess would be that is more a matter of dialect than a need to be independent. Correct me if I'm wrong, but throughout the UK, English is spoken differently based on the region you are in.Veck wrote:Well, the US still insists on using Imperial measurements all the time, instead of symbolic purposes like most European countries. The pounds thing I'm not fully sure about, although schools are beginning to have students use the metric system, especially in science courses. I would guess that sometime in the near future, the US will begin to push for a more metric system.
And back to the topic of football and the superbowl, its a sport that really does seem to borrow elements from a lot of other sports, and while the players seem fat, they really are talented athletes. It's unfortunate though because they usually specialize, for example, a quarterback is programmed to throw, and virtually never will you see him play anything other than that position.

Re: Superbowl?
Yes...and not at all. There was a huge movement to stop using our measurement system but it failed for a number of reasons, of which "being different" isn't one but "being stubborn" likely is. The system we use is actually from old Middle Age measurements, and actually I believe the British Empire used to use them as well (they were called "Imperial Measurements" I believe?). The problem is here in the US we stayed with the old system, which doesn't correspond to the finalized version of the Imperial Measurements system. And actually it's not like we don't know what the metric system is. There are plenty of products here that do have metric weights.Veck wrote: An American will probably correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's because they want to show their difference from Britain, which is why they also have their own variations on the English language.
And American English is different from British English for the same reason British English is different from Australian English and the people on the other side of the country don't speak exactly like you do: geographical, technological, and historical reasons that naturally change a language into dialects. We don't speak a different dialect because we want to be different from Britain: we speak a different dialect because that's how it evolved when my ancestors left Britain and had contact with groups the British did not - exactly the same reason I wake up and weigh myself in pounds.
As for American football: yes, not played with just your feet, and yes, it's a seemingly confusing game, but it makes up a huge, huge part of the culture here. Like everyone said, don't be fooled by the "fat guys": they are impressive athletes, and in this sport being heavy helps you in certain aspects of the game, like tackling/stopping the opposing team and what have you. It's a neat game - check it out!
Huzzah!

Who said they were wimpy??? And as several people have said, they are not fat, at least not in the traditional sense. They are large, but can be great athletes.Murcator wrote:Wait, so you are encouraged to be fat and whimpy?
I'm getting the impression that you are trying to slam football, rather than trying to fully understand what it is. I apologize if this is wrong, but this is just the impression I get.

Re: Superbowl?
I completely agree with scribbane here. This thread seems to be turning into a place to bash football and other things American which I have no problem with, but this is not the place for it. This thread was started with a question about what the superbowl is and that is what should be discussed here. We are discussing American Football, not your personal opinions about America and Americans in general.scribbane wrote:Who said they were wimpy??? I appreciate people's rights to express whatever they feel like expressing, but not when it's done in bad taste. If all you want to do is bash American Football, then go start a thread called "American Football is Stupid" or something. If you're just curious and want to know more about our sport, I'm sure we'd all love to keep talking with you under this topic.

Of course not, what a ridiculous suggestion.I'm getting the impression that you are trying to slam football, rather than trying to fully understand what it is. I apologize if this is wrong, but this is just the impression I get.
And if you want to mini-mod, then why don' you make a thread about that?If all you want to do is bash American Football, then go start a thread called "American Football is Stupid" or something.
