Help, PS3 Knights of Nine missing

Post by techtvfan »

Hi all, this is my first post so excuse me if I do/say something silly.

I have a PS3 and completed the Knights of the Nine quest and went on my way completing other quests. I returned looking to have one of the knights help me kill some stuff and found everyone had left except the blacksmith who won't kill anything. I've checked the main priory building, the chapel including the tower, and the surrounding landscape and found only bears. I'm still acknowledged as the crusader by others and my information screen. All nine knights were accepted but cannot be found. As stated, this is on the PS3 so no console fixes would work. I also don't know when it happened so I have no idea how far I'd have to go back (also, I've done cool stuff, so I don't really want to do that anyway)

here are some potentially unrelated facts: my horse also seems to have vanished, but there is a horse at the priory of the nine, but taking that horse registers as stealing. There were two oblivion gates near the priory, one was just to the South and the other was right on top of an abandoned house with bandits who were cooked when the gate showed up (between the priory and fort black boot) and none of them had knight corpses.

Has anyone experienced this? I'm also curious to know if this had happened to anyone else on a different platform.
Thank you,
Andrew

Yes, welcome to the forums.
Anyway that seems strange. Did you check to see if anything respawned? I haven't had this happen myself I'm just thinking of somethings.

good question

Post by techtvfan »

Thank you both for the quick replies and welcoming. As for the respawning, I don't think it does but I'd rather you made sure, I gave this several days to respawn where I was away at Bruma, here are the results: if I take stuff, it won't come back; if I put something down someplace, it won't be moved; but if I move something, it WILL return to its original location so I really don't know what to make of that.

I do recall, long long ago, taking the potions from the open chest in the basement (near the training dummy) and they came back before everyone vanished, but I recently took the potions that were there now and went back to Bruma and the open chest was still empty.

I thought respawning meant everything came back to the way it was before so things being organized when I came back really confused me. Any thoughts?
Many thanks,
Andrew

Well, you're on the PS3, so there's not really anything you can do other than revert to a previous save, or just wait around till they respawn. Sounds like they might have been attacked by a wandering bear, wolf, or forest sprite or something, and then lead away from the area and into a bigger fight. I know a few of the knights take care of the farm area, and they all go in and out of the chapel, so I could see them getting lead away from the priory area. Maybe. Just seems weired. Could just be a bug that made them just despawn altogether. Dunno. Did you try contacting Bethesda to see if it was a known issue for the PS3?

I could imagine a few wandering away, but there are some who spend most of their time sparring in the basement and wouldn't notice any fight outside. I have just posted the issue to the Bathesda though there was an unrelated question on the knights of the nine and the questioner was referred here. I've also seen several issues listed with the PS3 version so I guess the shivering isles expansion may come with some bug fixes (I hope!) This game has frozen quite a bit not to mention tossed things/people/me strange places, but that's what updates are for.
Thank you,

Yeah most things are kinda glitch in the begining. Yeah but keep us posted if anything comes up. We're glad to have a new active member.

They all leave when your supposed to kill Umaril. Whats your quest log say?

We've already defeated Umaril, so the quest is complete and the quest log says that also; the reason I returned is because I wanted some help with subsequent encounters for other quests. They did return to the priory after the battle (all nine of them) so I don't think that is the issue.

I did see them after we beat Umaril but I did check Garlas Maltar and it was just as it should be, no knights (or their corpses), no Umaril, no big black ball that makes the aurorans (Umaril's followers) come back to life, but the aurorans were there and so was the loot in the containers. I also checked the chapels in Corrol and Leyawiin to make sure no relics or crusaders returned to their original spots and found nothing strange there either. So that's a good sign, at least the problem isn't more widespread. But it does seem a really strange bug, the other ones I've seen make sense, flaws in AI where guards attack people who weren't doing anything wrong or people talking about themselves in the third person, that stuff makes sense and is easy to explain in programming terms but is the priory reverting to a past instance wherein the smith was there but nobody else was? i don't think that exists. I also don't think everyone is outside at the same time to wander off all together, but I suppose it could happen given enough time, it just seems so odd since I hardly see other dead people in the woods, maybe five total. Or is that more common than I realize?
Thank you,
Andrew

Well, this may or may not be unrelated, but on one occasion during the Mehrune's Razor quest I went into the fort to find that everyone in the initial area was fused into the ground up to their foreheads. Somehow the ground swallowed up all the characters. Could be something similar happened to you.

You could try sleeping at the Priory of the Nine for a couple of days (one right after the other), that might do something. Or, they could be lost forever.

Fascinating! I would have never thought of that! I equipped my best detect life gear and went looking high and low but only saw the blacksmith, sleeping and waiting did nothing to change the situation. Did the consumed characters ever recover? On what type of hardware were you playing? It's very interesting seeing all the different types of errors and bugs people find, I haven't found anything about a group of people vanishing, yet.
Many many thanks,
Andrew

I was playing on the 360 when it happened, and reloading my save restored them to their normal "above ground" status.

If nothing's working for you, then it's probably a massive glitch that isn't going to be solved by anything. Even if the original Knights are killed they're supposed to be replaced by generic "Knight of the Nine" characters. If that's not happening, then something probably went wrong within the game.

Update

Post by techtvfan »

Hi, Bethesda got back to me regarding the issue and had a suggestion, it didn't help me, but it might help somebody else in an uncomfortable console-based situation.

The console's harddrive caches certain information about the game, in my case this was about four gigs of data. It is NOT your save file. It just makes the loading quicker. For the PS3 it is located in the games tab in the "game data utility" and is the same for every account on the machine in question, as opposed to the "saved data utility" which is different per user. This cache also cannot be backed up.

I cannot speak for the 360 version, but I would suspect caching also occurs on that platform too.

Hope this helps somebody,
Andrew

Perhaps they got bored and decided to wander into the nearby oblivion gate? They are crusader knights after all. Its possible if you've been murdering and stealing to lose the right to wear the crusader relics and subsequently have to repeat the wayshrine pilgramage. Perhaps you lose the knights as well as the relics when this happens, can you still wear the armor?

Possible, but in my case I have been a model citizen, 0 infamy and the armor still likes me just fine. As for the oblivion gates, I believe corpses of non-oblivion native creatures return through the gate with the hero. A goblin once followed me into a gate near Skingrad and I killed him inside the gate only to find his corpse followed me back out, just like what happens in the wayward knight quest, located here:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:The_Wayward_Knight

Of course, I may be wrong in my assessment; I didn't make sure the goblin corpse was the exact one who followed me in and a deadra could have killed a different goblin so the wayward knight quest may be a special case. There seems to be no indication as to whether corpses travel back from oblivion, but I would have expected to see the corpses when I entered, but there is a great deal I do not know about the way corpses work so any info would be helpful.
Thanks,
Andrew
