My worries
I don't know, but I just feel like Bethesda is trying to make the Elder Scrolls into a more mainstream game and that is not what it was ever about... at least for me. Morrowind took a lot of patience and planning and RPG elements to just not be killed by a level 1 rat. Oblivion made everything so easy, almost like Halo with swords and bows. Maybe I'm just barking up the wrong tree...

Re: My worries
What is causing this concern? Is it something you've read about the development, or is it the fact that you consider Oblivion to be easier than Morrowind?

You gotta admit, this guys worries are well held. Basically, everything every fan didn't want (fast travel, less skills, etc), did happen. And everything suited for the Friday afternoon player has been incorporated into the game.
All I see is a ton of hype being built up, and I'm not buying it. I'll still buy the game, though I don't expect it to be worth what I pay.

Re: My worries
I'm personally really excited. The new combat and animations are HUGE, past TES games have been terrible in that department. I mean, dungeon diving in Oblivion and Morrowind was really boring, due to the combat.
Keep in mind with less skills, there are also perks now. Before you had Blade and Blunt. Now they could call it one handed and just have perks to increase bleeding with axes, armor penetration, etc. Perks add extra depth here. They won't be Fallout style perks that completely change the gameplay (well, Bethesda, they BETTER not).
Also I'm excited about lack of classes. Now I don't have to restart 100+ times (like I did on the past TES games) because something wasn't right.
Also, less scaling is huge. I really hope there is very little loot scaling, or at least, a lot of unique, unscaling loot in the game.

Please stop dissing them for catering to "friday-afternoon players". I see you around a lot. I understand that maybe they should incorporate a "hardcore mode" for people like you to get your kicks out of, but really. You talk about them incorporating fast travel etc as if it is a bad thing. It widens their market and means us "casuals" get to relax without frustration every now and again. And why shouldn't a wider variety of people get to enjoy their work? Us "casuals" can count ourselves as fans too.
My only worry is that I won't have enough time to play the actual game...

Re: My worries
Sorry if my pun offended you. Though, as much as a "Hardcore mode" would suite what we want, it's the fact that Bethesda are still catering for those who aren't playing the game for what the previous titles truly stood for. Why can't we get what we actually wanted?Chalk-heart wrote: Please stop dissing them for catering to "friday-afternoon players". I see you around a lot. Re: My worries
I dunno why everyone says that fast travel is a bad thing. Personally, I love Morrowind very much, and I think it's by far the best Elder Scrolls game, but I really liked fast travel and the map cursor in Oblivion. It made me get into game a lot easier. In Morrowind, one of the most frustrating things was not accurate directions given to you. Sometimes you could spend hours searching for something, because directions are misleading you... And also you always have to fight with yourself to not to go to UESP to see where you need to go. In Oblivion when cursor shows me where I need to go, I can just easily do one quest after another and immerse myself fully into game without unnecesary frustration

dont worry, Queorge,
Skyrim will be awesome
awesomely awesome, in fact
Its inevitable that as a game gets popular the developers try and bring more people in by making the challenging parts more easily digested, but even tho Oblivion has issues, i still think it is way better than any other rpg or experience point based adventure game of its time. I really think Skyrim will bring things back a bit towards the morrowind end of the scale, but still keep the user friendly options in

Re: My worries
I really should keep a post template for this subject matter...
To those saying 'quit worrying, it's not out for ages'? That's a churlish thing to say. Most people voicing concerns over Skyrim are those who loved Morrowind or the series pre-TES3. Subjectively, those concerns are valid. We all want games to be play up to what we want from a gaming experience. Oblivion and Fallout 3 were intensely casual games, and Skyrim's following suite. TES has changed.
And to those furrowing brows over Skyrim? Accept that the change make perfect sense from Bethesda's POV. In fact, they could not follow an alternate development process. They need to sell games.
As such, my expectations for Skyrim are zero. BioWare and Valve are the developers that deliver for me. All I want from Bethesda is a large, well designed, detailed, and atmospheric world to nose about. That's it. After Oblivion and Fallout 3 I don't expect depth, any characters or story to care about. If Skyrim improves these aspects? Then I'll not only enjoy the inevitably wonderful world, but I'll be pleasantly surprised too.

But what was it up against, really? Bethesda's open-worlders hold a fairly unique spot in the marketplace. So it's simply "way better" by lack of competition.mattbott wrote:even tho Oblivion has issues, i still think it is way better than any other rpg or experience point based adventure game of its time.

New Vegas, in parts, was pretty freaking tough. Although Bethesda didn't make that game, they can't ignore some of the positive press it got. I admit, however, that by comparison to morrowind it was easy, and I hope they make skyrim more like morrowind (minus the cliff racers, of course)

If Skyrim is equally unpredictable, dangerous, rewarding and has as much geographically variety as Morrowind. Coupled with this Radiant AI, new engine and better graphics.
Then we're in for a bloody ripper of a game. Simple as that.

Re: My worries
To those complaining about the lack of "hardcore" game elements, up the difficulty slider. It's there for a reason.
I honestly can't stand when people toss around how "hardcore" they are about video games as if it's some highly respectable title. Not accusing anyone in particular, but to those people, you aren't impressing anyone.
To those saying "Skyrim is t3h pwnz0rz! 5 yrs dev tiem guiz, best gaem EV4R! XD", lower your expectations, there's nothing that could possibly live up to them.
As for me, I'm taking a middle of the road approach and remaining cautiously optimistic.

Re: My worries
im also worried that:
i never played morrowind, well i played it once, but after oblivion.
Oblivion was my first elder scrolls experience, and the wonder of the open world was what really got me hooked,
Im scared that i wont feel that same WOW factor with skyrim, but i could be completely wrong
of course, ill wait until 11.11.11 and buy it anyway

Re: My worries
I played Morrowind first, and a lot, and while I was blown away by Oblivion at the beginning, the more I played the more i prefered Morrowind. Oblivions upside was that it looked better and was better to play (you could be a mage or thief). Morrowind felt larger ahd much more quests and it was rewarding exploring everywhere. In Oblivion you could never find any artifacts by chance. Hopefully they've landed in between.HatofMadness wrote:im also worried that:

But I don't think it will give the same as Morrowind did, the first always has that special feeling.

Re: My worries
I don't think anything could actually live up to my first Oblivion experience. I didn't really know anything about the game when I got it, I literally got it as it was one of the only PS3 games at the time with good reviews. (I'd just got the console and if anyone remembers in those early PS3 days there was a distinct lack of quality games!).
I have to confess I didn't even really know it was open world. I got through the tutorial, which I actually found a chore, and I thought the whole game was going to be like that! You be given a section of dungeon to work through and complete then another etc. Then out into the open...and WOW!!
I think it good to have worries and concerns, they stop us getting to carried away. And ultimately all TES games have been great! I know there's a lot of people on these forums in particular who go on about Morrowind, Which I have played after Oblivion, I think its all to do with that first experience! It can't really be replicated however good the next game is. There are going to be bits that are better than ever, bits that are worse and bits that divide opinion. Bethesda could never please everyone! We all want the game to be exactly what we want! And pretty much anyone who has any ideas has someone who disagrees! And lets face it we're pretty demanding fans! "They've added jobs! Wow that's amazing!!.... What do mean I can't build my own shop from scratch, with wood I've chopped and then sell weapons I've hand drawn scanned in and then smithed!! This is outrageous!" We always want more! I saw someone on one of the forums (can't remember which) complaining that they had changed Fatigue to Stamina! In short don't worry we know it'll be a great game thats why we're all here talking about it 9 months before its realised!

It looks like they are seeing games like cod and saying, "we want to be as huge as them".
Maybe they should slow down, and focus on making an RPG instead of an Action RPG.
Whilst these thoughts do linger, they don't worry me too much.

Skyrim will still awesome in my eyes

Re: My worries
Firstly, nudging a diff slider has absolutely nothing to do with a games design, which is what concerns people. Increased damage rates are just that.mptrj wrote:To those complaining about the lack of "hardcore" game elements, up the difficulty slider. It's there for a reason.

Whilst terms such as hardcore and casual are inherently daft, they reflect a demographic reality. Would the average Wii Fit player want to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R.? Ever since the PS1 forced the underground overground, the casuals have been funding the entire industry. Games like Mass Effect simply wouldn't exist on the same scale without them.
However, wanting to be associated with 'hardcore' gaming isn't about impressing anyone. It's about wanting a certain challenge in the experience, where your actions have potentially disastrous consequences. We don't want to be patronised. The trend for hand-holding is there to cater to the casual market, but just as they have the right to have accessible games, so too do hardcore gamers deserve a little lovin' sent their way now and again. As customers and end users, that's not an unfair position. Though the reality is that our hardcore pound/dollar/yen carries far less weight (literally!) than the casuals.
Until the industry fundamentally changes how it operates (I'm talking standardised platforms and/or cloud gaming), multi-format IP's which share Morrowind's ethos will be out of the question, because of the financial necessities. The industry - and the expressive artform that is gaming - needs as much diversity as possible.

Re: My worries
i think the "hardcore" worry comes in the fact that the casual elements often ruin the act of playing a role.
in oblivion, you could easily do everything. at once. and you were practically expected to. there was never any collision between interests, never any hard choice to make. that was to appeal to the casual that wishes to have maybe 1 character that does everything. the levelled system of oblivion also made it so all that content could be done from lvl 1. now, i am not saying that oblivion was terrible for it. oblivion is still by FAR my favorite rpg to play, simply due to the freedom of it.
but look at morrowind. you've got lvl 5 skeletons packing 50 arrows with Paralyze for 10 Seconds on em, real choices on what factions you can or cannot stay on good terms with, and the looming threat of being branded for life as an enemy to very dangerous folk. the major questing arcs actually interfered with other factions. and because you couldn't BE everything, and because there were so many limitations, it made your character much more focused in the role you intended for it. also god forbid you wandered somewhere you shouldn't have yet at your level.
it isn't about difficulty. its about punishment. oblivion had NO punishment. no consequences. you didn't totally lock out entire factions from 1 action.
my personal hope is that Skyrim brings back punishment. brings back decision. gives a reason for having specialized characters. but i also dont wish for a super-morrowind that totally locks out the casual. there's nothing wrong with a little decision making for the casual gamer, and i think its silly that game makers don't expect the casual to be capable of roleplaying.

Money. There are lots of us who didn't get into the series until Oblivion for whatever reason (lifestyle, age etc) and to whom the previous games might not appeal. For this exact reason I cannot comment upon the previous games (I'm not saying I won't give Morrowind a go, but I haven't yet)

Re: My worries
COD? CALL OF DUTY?! The day TES becomes similar to call of F****ng duty i will commit suicide. Don't get me wrong I actually enjoy playing cod2 when me and some friends go to a net-cafe for a LAN party but EA is not something any game developer should look up to. And I have faith in Bethesda. At least the developers and not the big bosses who want to fill their pockets with even more money. Also bethesda has made action RPG's since Arena and that was their first RPG. They've never made a "pure" RPG and that's good. Once again don't get me wrong I'm a sucker for RPG's and fantasy and all that stuff but a pure RPG wouldn't be ES. If Beth decides to make a pure RPG I'll look forwad to it and excpect it to be a blast as long as it's kept seperate from TES.Mucro wrote:It looks like they are seeing games like cod and saying, "we want to be as huge as them".
