anyone else hoping you dont HAVE to use dragonshouts?
like in oblivion when you can actually turn down becoming a member of the blades, say you can turn down the greybeards training and defeat the dragons strictly by force of arms. personally i find the whole dragonshout thing pretty dumb and am hoping to be able to do so.
just curious if anyone else was thinking along this line?

You'll probably have to take the training or whatever, but I doubt the game will force you to use the shouts.

yeah probably will, i just am a fan of pure martial characters and the whole concept of dragonshouts does not thrill me in the least, hopefully your right though and they wont be necessary to actually use

Well, according to gameinformer's article, dragon shouts aren't magick, it's more about how you speak some words in the dragon's tongue, so i think it actually fits more a warrior type, shouting to their foes, rather than a magick user.
As to if you'll have to learn them, my bet is yes, they will be part of the main quest, but you don't have to use if you don't want to.

Wouldn't not using the dragon shouts kind of just be missing out on part of the game? You'll probably have to use them at some point during MQ but other than that, I doubt you'll need to use them.

It's probably optional, i heard that you learn new Dragonshouts by killing dragons, and finding dragon text in ruins. Who knows?

Re: anyone else hoping you dont HAVE to use dragonshouts?
Sorry to disappoint ya, but its going to be required when fighting dragons, as your ability to utilize the same power that the dragons use is what actually makes you formidable against them. I am very certain that they will be required to some degree whenever you go to battle with a dragon. Oh and for those who say that they are optional simply because you have to actually find them, this just means that you will spend most of your time running from the dragons until you acquire those powers.
I wouldn't let it bother you too much though. I was a little disappointed at first, as I usually play more assassinish characters (stealth, poison, arrows, poison, daggers, poison). But then I realized from the magazine article that there will be shouts that aid you in playing your character the way you'd like to play him. Just use the shouts that fit your character play style. Listen to Tom Howard in the magazine article (not from the article online):

Listen to Tom Howard in the magazine article (not from the article online):
No need to worry, as I believe there will be shouts that fit a more combat oriented character, and act more like buffs than actual attack spells. Think of how the time slowing shout would work. There is a possibility that what it actually does is heighten your reflexes, making you react much faster than your opponents. This would be pretty fun to use as a martial character who is surrounded by opponents, but then goes into bullet time mode and decimates his opponents before they can even react..."There are over 20 unique shouts in the game, and each one is formed from three words of power. These are acquired in various ways as you journey through the world. With each new word, the shout you expel grows in intensity and power. "They are all translatable [from draconic to English], like 'strong wind of the gods,'"Howard details.
"Dragon shouts expand your abilities in many directions. One sends foes hurtling away from you, staggered by the force of your yell. Another slows down time around you. Some unique words of power are spoken as a whisper, to aid in a stealthy approach, like the one that sends you instantaneously from one place to another. One particularly potent shout speaks the true name of an actual dragon, and the beast is forced to come to your aid and fight beside you in battle."
.

so i guess the consenus is that im crazy and the only one then? XD no matter, like i said im glad there in for the people that find ti cool, but the idea of screaming draconic words to buff myself is just wasted on me. you've all made some good points but hopefully i will at least never have to use them. and if i do so be it im sure the game will thrill me in other aspects!

Sounds like a harry potter meets Eragon moment...yuck...Eric Aurum'Barba wrote:Well, according to gameinformer's article, dragon shouts aren't magick, it's more about how you speak some words in the dragon's tongue,
As for the dragons, If you can't slay it through brute force or burn it to cinders with a spell, then they shouldn't be in the game full stop. I don't want anything to do with any immortal-unless-done-this-way junk. Not fun gameing.
Besides, What heroic knight ditches his/her sword to yell at the monster instead? i wouldn't.

lol exactly why this feature seems rediculous to me, on another forum i go to every week someone will ask "is :insert weak caliber firearm: ok for concealed carry?" and the common response is "well it beats hurling insults at the bad guy" it just reminds me of that in way, i dont wanna shout at things to hurt them, i wanna cleave them in half with my axe!Dragonov wrote: Besides, What heroic knight ditches his/her sword to yell at the monster instead? i wouldn't.

well to be honest, i like the idea. Im really looking foward to just summoning that one dragonjust to fight one villager, then making him leave

Like its been said before. The Dragon Shouts don't directly hurt them. (Mabye some do.) But the ones we have heard of just aid you in combat. Like slowing down time or pushing your enemies away from you. I do kind of doubt that you will HAVE to use them to defeat dragons, but without them its going to be waayy harder.

Re: anyone else hoping you dont HAVE to use dragonshouts?
Battlecries have always been a staple in warrior culture and lifestyle. Who said anything about ditching your sword? You let out a bellowing, intimidating yell (ever played Barbarian in Diablo II?) while bearing your axe down on the enemy's head. I bet there is a rallying Dragonshout, that boosts your (and any companions') stats to make you stronger during battle.Vinja wrote:lol exactly why this feature seems rediculous to me, on another forum i go to every week someone will ask "is :insert weak caliber firearm: ok for concealed carry?" and the common response is "well it beats hurling insults at the bad guy" it just reminds me of that in way, i dont wanna shout at things to hurt them, i wanna cleave them in half with my axe!Dragonov wrote: Besides, What heroic knight ditches his/her sword to yell at the monster instead? i wouldn't.

I find it extremely comical that people are making comments to the effect of 'i am completely turned off,' or 'this doesn't interest me in the least.' It makes you sound quite ignorant to dismiss something that you know very little to nothing about. You have no idea how its really going to work or how it will truly be implemented.
I expect us all to be a little more intelligent than that. Lets not make hasty conclusions here.

so im ignorant because the IDEA of it doesnt interest me? i know enough about it to know that it just doesnt do anything for me, everyone has different interests and would play a game like this differently. the idea of shouting at dragons in a draconic language to make different effects happen just seems stupid to me. im sorry that makes me ignorant to you, but you know nothing about me other then i find the idea of it rediculous, so how can you even begin to judge my intelligence level?Humans Vanish wrote:I find it extremely comical that people are making comments to the effect of 'i am completely turned off,' or 'this doesn't interest me in the least.' Sometimes you gotta do things you don't want to do. Sorry to break it to you. Every hero has tasks that he or she must do to save existance or opression. Indiana Jones had to brave snakes. Frodo lost a damn finger. I'm sure you will survive a few shouts here and there. Your a big boy.Vinja wrote:so im ignorant because the IDEA of it doesnt interest me? i know enough about it to know that it just doesnt do anything for me, everyone has different interests and would play a game like this differently. the idea of shouting at dragons in a draconic language to make different effects happen just seems stupid to me. im sorry that makes me ignorant to you, but you know nothing about me other then i find the idea of it rediculous, so how can you even begin to judge my intelligence level?Humans Vanish wrote:I find it extremely comical that people are making comments to the effect of 'i am completely turned off,' or 'this doesn't interest me in the least.' I mean, you can go play Oblivion again if you don't want to experience anything new. But I'm going to be playing Skyrim. If I decide to RP a character who doesn't shout then I won't play the main quest or he can extremely dislike doing it during the MQ. And if the game has as much gameplay as previous titles, then 300+ hours - 20 = 280. Works for me.
Get over it. Either play the game or don't. But I'm sure you will because you have to. Its the new ES game. And I'd bet money you will even shout every now and then in the privacy of your own home.
EDIT: Spelling Errors

uhmm vanish you seem to have completely missed when i said that. you seem a tad bit combative because i was curious if anyone else thought it would be a forced aspect of the game or if you could choose not to use them if one so wished. whats your problem? all i did was ask a question and you throw phrases around like "get over it" and "your a big boy" not ONCE did i say it would ruin the game, i was simply asking a question to the other fine folks who peruse this forum.Vinja wrote:you've all made some good points but hopefully i will at least never have to use them. and if i do so be it im sure the game will thrill me in other aspects!
and plus what do you care if i dont like the idea of it or not? your not me, you never will be, and the way i would choose to play a game is none of your damn business. and if you dont like my opinion then why not get out of this thread? no'one forced you to come in here now.

Dean/Lelilah/Dark Lord are going to rein down upon you two with a fiery vengeance. So I suggest stopping whenever you feel is appropriate.
Like I said, you probably won't have to use dragonshouts. But like other people said, it fits the playtypes. Warriors always have those crazy battlecries, but this time they will actually aide you in battle. Sneakier characters can just do a quick whisper of power and mages, well it fits them perfectly.
