Re: Combat System.
the facts i know:
1.- attack on horses:
if you put atention on sec 24 of the release video we can see a mounted soldier whit a lance.
2.-pasive-offensive states:
some screensof game informer (sneaking a horse) and a detailed attack description suggest that we'vgot two posible states: pasive and offensive.
3.-finishing moves:
when you kill an enemy you can see a short-cut video in which your character is making an special finishing move, there are diferent escnes, it depends the enemy and the weapon you use.
4.-two weapon fighting
you can choose a sword in one hand and magic in the other, but the magic is much powerfull if you use the two hands to cast it.
sorry because my bad english ;p

I do hope there is at least some combat on horseback, but i don't think some dude with a lance carved in stone means we'll get it.

well is pretty obvius to me that now we will can attack mounted on horses, is something logic and well that dude carved in stone can be a clue of how we will can do thatJJSmart wrote: Oooooh...i thought there was some gameplay video with a glimpse of horseback combat.

Re: Combat System.
My wishes:
1.) Be able to shoot people in the head with arrows and target the vital points of the body with other weapons for maximum damage
2.) NPC's are less clunky in conbat (Ex 1 - I'm running to a soldier for help with a big bad werewolf chasing me; I want him to help, FAST. Ex 2: Companions attack the enemy from the other side)
3.) Not all enemies to charge you up front
4.) For baddies to realize that they've lost three fingers and run away
5.) Speaking of loss of fingers, dismemberment would be nice

I am going to place my trust fully in Bethesda fully for this one. I hope they have learned from their mistakes in Oblivion.

Oh god, I hope that the cutscene isn't super cheesy or anything. I want to play a /roleplaying game/ not a /Mortal Kombat game/.
Er, I want to be able to decapitate and impale without mods. Not just as a "finishing move," but as an actual move.
Also, sneak attacks with blades that are better. I want to be able to come up behind someone and slice their throat. Not swing my sword or dagger or whatever while in sneaking position.

well i trust in bethesda, i hope in their wisdom

Re: Combat System.
I'd prefer to be playing an RPG - so how combat is handled isn't really important. I'm still okay with Morrowind's combat. From Skyrim, I want atmosphere, customisation, and a decent world to explore (a good story, characters and dialogue is beyond Bethesda it seems). If I want fancy combat, I'll play BlazBlue. Or Bayonetta.
Don't get me wrong, a good combat system would be nice in Skyrim. But surely it's not a priority.

In Gameinformer there was one picture of our character doing an Assassin Creedish style kill (Hugging & Stabbing)
Would this be a good or bad thing in your opinion?

If there are mini-cutscenes on successful assassination moves, BUT we can choose to remove them, great! Otherwise it's gonna get old very fast.
Other than that, i've been hoping for assassin-style moves in Skyrim...let's just hope they're well executed
Re: Combat System.
i love the idea of critical/sneak one hit kill attacks, i dont think that those movements get old if there are like 4 or 5 variations of thoseFist wrote:Sorry if this has been posted, (not going to read through 88 posts first)

Re: Combat System.
My only concern is with animations that take you out of the view that you have set at the time. For example, lets say you are playing in first person view, and you do a finishing move, I want to see that finishing move done in first person view, I don't want the game to switch me to third person. If I want to see the move done in third person, then I'll do the move in third person. That is just about the only real concern about have about special finishing animations.

Can someone tell me how many screenshots are featured in the Magazine. I heard its a 14 page article, and I recently found a web page that shows what was featured, but it didnt look like much, defintely not enough to fill 14 pages. And there were only like five screenshots. Im wondering if theres more? I do hope there are.
Fist mentioned the picture with the assaasination, I didnt see anything like that?

Re: Combat System.
I was thinking the ability to parry (not block) would be a nice addition. Sure, parrying may not have the potential to be as effective at stopping blows as blocking with a shield, but maybe giving up the shield results in faster strikes/general movement?

First of all, I'm not sure what that first sentence means. Were you trying to curse or something? It didn't make sense.Alucard wrote:Can someone tell me how many [&@%!] are featured in the Magazine. If you are asking if there are alot of features in the article, yes. There is a load of detailed information. While you can always wish for more. its still very satisfying to start out with. When I have a moment, I'll post a detailed summary of the features in the "I read the Gameinformer magazine article" thread. Feeding my 2 month daughter right now, so the hands are kinda full! lol
Oh yeah, and the "assassination" picture that people are talking about is some hooded rogueish looking character, who is pulling off some kind of "hugging stab" kind of move. He is reaching over the dude's shoulder with one arm in order to pull the dude closer, while using his other hand to shove his dagger into the opponent's gut. It looks really good.
EDIT:
Yeah I mentioned this too. I have a very long and detailed list of features that I feel should be thrown into the combat. Check it out on page 5, if your interested.Doctor Meaticus wrote:I was thinking the ability to parry (not block) would be a nice addition. Re: Combat System.
Would it just be you taking no damage, and some text saying you parried, or would you automatically jump two feet to the left/right?
I wouldn't mind the text thing (Although I understand some people need an animation for everything..) but my character moving himself is something I really, really, hate in games.
I can see myself auto-side stepping into a wizard's fury and taking more damage than I would originally have taken.
Or off a cliff.
Plus you could roll in Oblivion, which I used for a quick getaway mechanism- I guess it was kind of like parrying. :\

Re: Combat System.
I'm fine with the character taking over and doing his thing in the finishing animations. But I don't want it to be automatic. I mean, give me some kind of context sensitive cue (like in God of War), so I can choose whether or not I even want to go into the animation. It needs to be tactical. If I see my opponent's buddy closing in on me, I'm not going to want to launch into some 3-5 second animation that leaves me open for a mace-strike to the head from behind. Let me have the choice not to go into the animation. The Dog Whisperer wrote:Would it just be you taking no damage, and some text saying you parried, or would you automatically jump two feet to the left/right?

Re: Combat System.
I think it could be done effectively if the opponent lunges at you, and your character leans to one side, deflects the blow with the shield, and then strikes the opponent downward. That way it could be used as an effective knockdown move or finishing move without taking too long for the animation to finish.MasterShadow wrote:I'm fine with the character taking over and doing his thing in the finishing animations. Re: Combat System.
i really want those finisging moves and sneak critical moves but im concerned about the variation of them, if they add one diferent finishing move depending on the weapon but your character only use a sword its the same boring thing every time.
i want 3 things:
1.-as jjsmart says,- the posibilitie of use the finishing move or dont. (if is optional i dont vgot problem with the variation)
2.-if there are 5 enemys in the room, and im doing a finishing move, that the other enemies dont attack me or if they attack me that their attacks break my finishing move (realism)
3.-that some special followers and enemies can use those moves, it can be interesting see some companions performing some moves that you never use because maybe you dont use a hammer or an axe, etc etc
if those three happen then this thing can be great.
also this can be great:

Re: Combat System.
I hope these finishing moves aren't overly cinematic and take forever. I'd much prefer quick killing blows like what mptrj said to take under 2 seconds, so it looks more brutal and less like you're playing in The Matrix.

Yeah, I hope its just a quick "Hug-Stab" not an epic multi camera angle, slowed time move. It would be extra-cool if they kept it in first person, I wonder how that would work.JJSmart wrote:I hope these finishing moves aren't overly cinematic and take forever. Maybe this new engine can fully render the player character in 1st person (if so, no more looking down to NO LEGS!), which would make the finishing move animations for 1st and 3rd person the same, and we could choose our POV.

GameInformer said they improved third-person. Also in FO3/NewVegas couldn't you see your feet? They are using an improved engine so I'm pretty sure you will be able to see your feet.JJSmart wrote:If they manage to keep the finishing moves in whatever camera mode you're on, it'd be ideal.Fist wrote:Yeah, I hope its just a quick "Hug-Stab" not an epic multi camera angle, slowed time move.
