Starting Out in Morrowind

Post by Sav »

So, i just started playing Morrowind again. I created this thread to see what you guys did when you started out. I grabbed a few useful weapons, joined the mages guild, and now i'm doing the main quest.

Thanks. :D I like Oblivion and Morrowind equally. but it seems that Morrowind is more devoted to the Hardcore gamer, while Oblivion is more casual. I am only level 1, any idea how to level up? I hated the directions they give you. I am relying heavily on the UESP.

If you're used to Oblivion, it's very similar. As he said, majors and minors give you levels, and just like Oblivion you have to gain ten points in any of the skills. It's a bit easier, generally speaking, because you have ten skills to level up from instead of just seven.

Fatigue is everything in Morrowind. Running drains it, and everything tends to go to hell as your fatigue drains. Spells fail, you can't hit anything... You get the picture.

Lesson: Always carry fatigue-restoring items. Turn off autorun (usually caps lock) while fighting, you're Fatigue will restore faster.

And if you're a fighter, keep a few Sujamma and/or Flin with you at all times when dungeon-crawling. The Strength-boost of Sujamma can get you out of a pinch, especially on lower levels. Flin is more expensive, but Sujamma is cheap and effective.

Get caught up in side quests. My character right now is level 27 and I haven't started the main quest yet. And I still keep finding new stuff to do.
Get with one of the great houses, they usually have pretty sweet quests and you get a house out of it :D

It's a great game, with plenty of surprises and always something to do.

Gosh I envy everyone who can start Morrowind from a somewhat clear table. My advice is: play it. :)

Where did you find this? I remember Oblivion had a reference table.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Increasing_Skills

I looked everywhere under Morrowind but all I could find was a snippet under Classes.

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Classes
What Defines a Class
Each class has one of three Specializations: Combat, Magic, or Stealth. Each of the twenty-seven Skills is also classified into one of these Specializations. Your character enjoys a five-point bonus to their starting proficiency in the nine Skills that match the Specialization of their class. They also increase those Skills faster, needing only 80% of the normal experience points for each Skill level. In the table above, the shaded set of Skills for each class indicates their Specialization.

Each class "favors" two of the eight primary Attributes. Your character will start with ten extra points in the favored Attributes of their class, added to the values determined by their race and gender. The final column of the table above shows the favored attributes of each class.

Each class categorizes five Skills as "Major", five others as "Minor", and the remaining seventeen as "Miscellaneous". The greatest significance of this is that only Major and Minor Skills advance your progress toward the next level when they increase. Another benefit, however, is that your character's proficiencies will start at 30 in each Major Skill and 15 in each Minor Skill. Miscellaneous Skills start at 5. These are the values before any bonuses from race or Specialization. The experience points required to increase a Skill are only 75% of normal for Major Skills, but they are increased to 125% of normal for Miscellaneous Skills. In the table above, Major Skills are marked with a capital M, and Minor Skills are marked with a lower-case m.
This seems to indicate Majors increase at 75%, Minors 100%, Miscellaneous 125% and skills that fall under your Specialization category knocks off another 20% from those? Minors weren't actually specified so I presumed 100%. Is this incorrect?

He got the stats, Syn, from the Morrowind handbook that comes with the game. It is under Classes I think.

One good way to start is create an alchemist character, 'cause when you get better in alchemy, you will see al the effects a common item like Rat Meat does, then buy a Calcinator, an Alembie, a Mortar and Pestle and i forgot the other one. Create really good potions, train your other major and minor skills and in no time you will become a great warrior/mage/rogue.
