Things That Made You Cry

Post by evenratman »

There was a bit of a discussion about this earlier in the 'What are you listening to at the moment' thread. Ever since, I've been eager to know more about the things that have made you guys choke up, shed a few tears, or full-on sob. It can be a song, a book or story, a film, a video game, etc. Don't be shy! Just tell us what has made you cry.

Oh, and please, none of this 'real-men-don't-cry' business.

Real men don't cry...
On that note, the first time I heard to song "Last to Know" by Three Days Grace, I didn't cry, but I definitely shed a few tears.
A poem my aunt wrote at my grandma's funeral also made me cry, but you know, she was my grandma, I loved her, and funerals aren't exactly the happiest get togethers.

Psh, machismo means nothing to me. :P
Books; I cried at the end of The Clan of the Cave Bear, because it was sad, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, because it was happy, The Amber Spyglass, because it was sad and Bill Bryson's Notes From a Small Island, because it's so [&@%!] funny.

Songs; Rarely make me cry, so this includes some that made me come close: Mono's Moonlight, Sigur Rós' Untitled #6 (E-Bow), This Will Destroy You's Burial on the Presidio Banks and pg.lost's The Kind Heart of Lanigon.

Games; There's only one case I got so embroiled in a game's story and it had an ending that made me cry: Final Fantasy X.

Films; lol, Wayyy too many, so rather than mentioning sop, I'll mention Air Doll. A film I found through the soundtrack, written by one of my favourite artists Katsuhiko Maeda, or World's End Girlfriend.
It was sad, I guess, but also deep. I guess almost pretentious, but anything that tends to deal with humanity is called that.

The only pieces of media that have made me come close to crying were the ending of Toy Story 3, and a book called Grudgebearer by Gav Thorpe.

However, this song is easily the most emotional song I've ever heard in my life, and I did in fact cry during it. It's about a man whose wife has cancer and is losing the fight against it. She asks him to help her commit suicide, and in doing so provokes his own suicidal thoughts. The pair kill themselves, the man shortly after the wife.

Thinking about the awful things the human race as a whole has accomplished and about the large number of hateful and ignorant people there are in the world does bring me down sometimes.

But regarding media and art, I think films are what get to me easiest. There are a few films that have made me cry. I'll make a point of not spoiling anything.

Vanilla Sky (2001) gets me every time. I don't know why, but that film has a really bad wrap. Regardless, it's honestly my favourite film. There are a few moments in the film where I can shed a few tears, but it's the end that really gets to me. Oh, and I'm a Tom Cruise fan.

Magnolia (1999), which The Tourist mentioned in the music thread. That film is very hard to explain, and I'm not even going to try, but there are just so many beautiful moments, sad moments, and funny moments that I can't help but get swept up in the emotions.

The Thin Red Line (1998) is another one. This was a bit of a surprise to me the first time because the scene in question is very passive, but the character development is so skilfully done that it was impossible for me not to feel for them. A visually stunning film.

Also: Dancer in the Dark (2000), which has Björk playing the lead; Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), which didn't really make me cry but really choked me up (probably my second favourite film); John Q (2002), because of terrific acting by Denzel Washington; The Ice Storm (1997); and Irréversible (2002), not because of the film itself, but because of what it made me think about after.

As for other things... video games! Well, only one video game has really touched me emotionally, and that was Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. My favourite video game story by far, and one of my favourite video games.

Songs now... OK, so no song has actually made me cry, but a few have come close! Namely Michael by Red House Painters, the first time I ever heard it. It's a song about an old friend who Mark Kozelek (the singer) hasn't seen in years. He just reminisces about the good times they had together. The things that really get to me are the final lyrics ("my best friend...") and the absolutely beautiful music that ensues. I posted the lyrics in the 'Meaningful Lyrics' thread.

Red House Painters' Katy Song also made me tear up. It's an extremely depressing song about a girl, and for me, the most touching lyrics are when Mark sings: "I know tomorrow you will be in London, living with someone. You've got some kind of family there to turn to, and that's more than I could ever give you."

Finally, Sigur Rós' Untitled #4, but only a live performance that I have of it (which is in Vanilla Sky, but not on the soundtrack). Beautiful performance, but it mainly gets to me because it makes me think of Vanilla Sky. :P

Damn, that took a while to write...

One dog whimpering over the dead body of another dog laying alongside a road.

— that's not something I conjured up in my head. I've seen it.
Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

And it's made you cry? That's probably something you might want to discuss in the 'Internet = Drama' thread.

The first movie that made me cry was... The original Poke'mon movie. I was a wee lad in those days, and Ash dying made me quite sad. Then when he came back to life, I was so happy.

When I read Roots by Alex Haley, I shed a couple tears in a few places.

Every Metal Gear Solid game I've ever played has at the least made my eyes water at some point.

I'm sure there's more, but I'm tired of typing.

Nothing really. I've never really felt anything in most forms of media, and what makes me cry in real life is basically a given. Close dead family member, but that hasn't happened in a while, thankfully enough.

There have been somethings that did make me feel something. The first time watching Elfen Lied, for one. I also felt something with the romance story with Morrigan in Dragon Age once I realized that she was gone for good.

I cried a few days ago when I saw people on another forum didn't care about their depressed forumite. I literally broke out crying at my computer screen.

Just to be weird:
The scene towards the end of Terminator 2 when the T-800 lowers himself into the molten steel made me cry when I was like, 9.

I've cried over the death of several of my dogs.
And I shed a tear or two at the end of Toy Story 3.

Yes. I did. Reminded me of me. I also cried when Dobby died. But before that? The last time I got really upset about anything was when a friend of mine moved to Austria. I was about ten. We'd been best friends since nursery and, well, the fact that I had literally ten minutes of knowing they were leaving and being able to say goodbye before they left was heartbreaking. I still keep in contact, but it just isn't the same. I imagine my reaction to someone's death would be similar. I just hope I'm able to cross that bridge when it comes to it.

Songs are mainly the thing that makes we want to cry a little. The thing is though it isn't just one or two songs, they change all the time depending what mood I am in. So I can't really link to them unless you want an entire backup of my Itunes.

The end of The Return of the King always makes me break into sobs.

A few soundtrack cuts do too. The Temple of Light from Fable I and City Dock (Day) from NwN. Mainly 'cuz of nostalgia and stuff.

I nearly cried at the end of Toy Story 3 as well, but I held it back, I was with a friend.

I can't say I've ever read a book that made me cry. Owait, RotK the book made me cry too >_>;

Yeah, me too. Like "When will this END?!?! For the love of all that is just, END!"...
(other than boring me to tears, it did actually move me to tears at the same time. Then again, Titanic's end got me, so I'm easy to manipulate)
Veck wrote:the second half of ()
The fist half doesn't move you as much? I guess (especially) the last track is a little bit epic, but I still prefer the prettier first four tracks.

Best 'Head track that gets me teary is the Thom+piano version of Sale To The Moon, especially during a Steve Lamacq special a few years back. Gorgeous.

Agreed. The little story about the couple at the beginning is probably the saddest thing I've ever seen in one of those Pixar/Dreamworks animated movies, but then again, I haven't seen Toy Story 3, and a lot of people have mentioned it.

In October there was a dead bird in our back yard, and another bird just standing beside it staring at it.
It stayed for an hour after I noticed, and I don't know how long beforehand.
I maybe would've expected to be slightly sad seeing the dead bird, but the empathy for the other one is the killer.

And Dancer in the Dark!
Again my motivation for watching it was music connections, but damn it's depressing.
I was echoing David Morse at parts.

Methinks it's been namechecked already, but I saw WALL-E for the first time, and that got me - a number of times. I'm not one to big-up Pixar overmuch, but that was a mighty fine piece of work. Great score, too.
Spoiler:
Though I actually kinda wanted WALL-E to stay 'lost' at the end, for that whole self-sacrifice vibe. What can I say? I loves me some bittersweetness...
