Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
I've just though of this now and would like to hear some opinions on it.
In Oblivion, Light armor gave the same amount of defense rating as Heavy armor when you get to a certain level of mastery with Light armor.
Now, I know Heavy armor had the same sort of perks that would come with mastery, no weight, no encumberance..etc.., the only difference being that Heavy armor had more durability, but honestly, I believe that someone who has the same level of Heavy armor mastery as a person with Light armor should still have a better damage resistance. Makes sense, no?
Of course Light armor would need a unique perk to make it on par with Heavy armor in terms of balance, but what extra could be gven to Light armor? Maybe more spell effectiveness with light armor? Limiting it at 95, while limiting Heavy armor to 80-5? Just a suggestion. Now I want to see what some of you guys have to say.
Peace out,
KJ

Heavy armor buffs your endurance, light armor buffs your agility. Makes sense, no?

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
The reason light armour isn't 'on par' with heavy armour in terms of defence is because it's not as heavy, beacause it's lighter than heavy armour it evens out.
Also the idea above me for an attribute being increased for each type of armour.

That actually makes sense, no?ZombiezuRFER wrote:Heavy armor buffs your endurance, light armor buffs your agility. Makes sense, no?
A good idea would be to make it so that these stats go over the 100 attribute mark.
Ex. Max skill with Heavy armor and 100 Endurance=110 Endurance, you know what I mean?

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
I totally think Heavy Armor should have higher defense than Light Armor (and I hope they bring back Medium Armor). But maybe Heavy Armor could limit your Agility, or Light Armor could have some other feat. Can't come up with anything good at the moment.

Maybe there could be certain maneuvers you can't perform while in heavy armor. Like rolling avoid move.

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
Also, the armor shouldn't be so linear as in Oblivion. You always had to trade up armor because the next one was always better. Make it so that each has their ups and downs, like chainmail is light armor thats pretty heavy, but your still as agile and it protects against arrows a little. In full Dwemer you have limited vision and lower agility, but you speed won't be affected as much and you will get better protection.

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
Yeah, they should totally add more diversity to different armors. Like some are more resistant to piercing attacks (arrows, stabbing with swords, spears [they should totally bring back spears]) and some are resistant to blunt attacks (maces, warhammers, Morrowind style staves, if they're included), and so on.

I love this idea. I use the Morag Tong armor on my assassin (I love the look of the leather set with the black hood) and I wouldn't say no to some gameplay mechanic justification to using leather. (Highest agility armor, maybe?)ZombiezuRFER wrote:Also, the armor shouldn't be so linear as in Oblivion. You always had to trade up armor because the next one was always better. This could work out well, I think fur would be the most agile though, the agility bonus would be less all the way up to the best armor(depending on the material)Symphonic wrote:I love this idea. Not too sure about Heavy armor effect though, the extra damage resistance would be enough for me, but maybe a set of extra effect? Say, Daedric Armor would give you some extra protection to fire, but be the weakest armor in terms of shock resistance(This is because Daedric Armor is actually Ebony with the soul of a lesser Daedra forged into it)

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
While at the armor bit, why not make it account for weapons too? Why should Dwemer be less than Elven? why should Ebony be the top of everything when it is so hard to work with?

A suggestion-
What if Light Armour gives a bonus multiplier to sneak damage and gives increased Marksman damage? Then Heavy Armour could give a bonus multiplier to power attacks and Blade/Blunt damage.

No armor should give damage bonuses unless enchanted. It simply wouldn't be realistic. Don't tell me that "Were getting dragons, but you want realism?" Yeah, I want realism, including realistic dragons.

Re: Heavy armor vs Light armor in Skyrim
Heavy armor should stunt acrobatics, even at the master level. I
don't care how much you've trained with iron plates on your chest,
you're still not doing backflips without pulling something. But light
armor shouldn't ever provide the same protection as heavy. At
least a 2 point difference, per piece. So, at max, light armor is 10
points less effective than heavy armor.

I wouldn't mind if it was left as-is. In reality, someone who knows how to move in light armor and can exploit it's strengths and weaknesses is on a par with someone who knows how to cower behind a skin of steel.

Fur and leather armor should give you a bonus to fatigue for keeping you warm, fur being better. Chainmail, mithril, and glass should nerf fatigue for being cold.

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
The way I see it there should be both advantages and disadvantages to wearing one type of armor or the other. For example:
Heavy Armor should grant you better damage protection compared to light armor irregardless of mastery lv. It should also also grant you better protection against knockdowns. On the other hand it would make you slower, again irregardless of mastery lv you should never move faster than someone wearing light armor. And it should't be possible to make dodges while wearing it.
Light armor will have less protection, but will allow you to move faster and dodge. It could be possible to add a higher chance of disarming the opponent while wearing light armor since you have more movility.
Now like someone else said every individual armor should have different effects so that no armor becomes absoluetly obsolete.

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
I never found any armour obsolete, but that might just be because I cared about my character's aesthetic value..
I love how full mithril looks, even if my character's level fifty. Not like it matters at that point, though.
Since people are suggesting random additions to armours, enemies (Or yourself, if the situation's right) should take a small amount of damage if they hit you with their fists and you're wearing heavy armour.
I dunno about Light Armour up-ing Marksman and Heavy doing melee, though. I play a couple of characters who use Light Armour and don't use bows at all. Be crippling them (Or at least pushing them aside) if that was the case.
If there's anything like that at all, something as simple as making a matching weapon do slightly more damage would suffice..
i.e. Full ebony armour means a 1.25x or 1.5x multiplier to attacks with an ebony weapon.
Because er... You know how to use ebony.. <_<

Re: Heavy armor Vs Light armor in Skyrim
I didn't mind how the system worked in Oblivion, so if it works about the same, it's fine with me. As long as the designs look cool. I do 2nd layering robes over armor though.

Totally. With cloaks and capes besides the robes. If you look at real medieval knights they wore this stuff and in a frozen place like Skyrim it would be necessary.Murcator wrote:I just want to be able to wear robes on cuirass' simultaneously. Pleeeaaaasssee bethesda!
