Companion System
In morrowind, the only followers you could get were when certain quests had holes in them that allowed you to keep them as a companion outside of that quest. And even then, they weren't really followers that you could command and fight with. The only exception is in the downloaded plug in siege at firemoth. However, those companions are hard to keep during the quest since they most likely die during the raid.
In Oblivion, companions were easier to get since you could get companions more easily. There the knights of the nine expansion allows you to get the knights to follow you and fight with you. Same thing goes for another one of the plug ins. But in both Oblivion and morrowind there was no OFFICIAL companions system. In Fallout 3 there was a companion system, even if it just involved collecting them, they still had their own abilities and acted like your own personal squad. There was also a great companion system in New Vegas. You could then command your followers and give them orders.
Thats what I would like in Skyrim. I would like to go around the land and come across a certain individual. Maybe with the Radiant AI i hope their putting in, I could start a companionship with that person and have them follow me. If I'm a warrior maybe I might need a, archer or a mage to back me up if I'm tackling a dungeon or cave. And My companions could level up with me and gain new skills to make them better in combat. Basically like having your own adventuring party that you can order around and strategize on the battlefield. So what do you guys think? What kind of Companion system would you want in Skyrim?

Re: Companion System
this is pretty much going to happen, they did say "it's going to do more then fallout 3" so I'm guessing this will be installed.

I'm a one man wolfpack. I won't be recruiting anyone anyway.

Re: Companion System
A good companion system with enhanced AI would be spectacular. It would be good if you could craete your own bandit gang or maruader squad, even just a faithful friend helping out would be fantastic, but i wonder if they will allow animal companions? A dog or scamp... maybe even a squad of scamps

Re: Companion System
I never really took stock of companions in Fallout 3, and in Oblivion all they seemed to do is charge into trouble and die, get in my way and die or just wander into firepits or off cliffs and...die...
If Skyrim has potential companions that actually have brains I may have a go, it would be cool to be a duo of assassins or knight brothers - could even have a small sidequest to learn more about the companions backstory (like Dragonage - but not as touchy feely)

Re: Companion System
exactly thats what i never liked about the companion thing in oblivion. They never listened to you. In skyrim. i hope they manage to give them better AI so u can control them better and have it so that you can have your own personal group based on what kind of followers u want. If u like assassins then have an assassin group with you as leader or maybe a group of barbarians or archers or magic-users. Also i would like them to have personality and for me to be able to build friendships or relationships with them similar to dragon age

Re: Companion System
Maybe like in Neverwinter Nights, where you could hire henchmen, then learn about their back stories? They would die, respawn, die, respawn, and so on.

Re: Companion System
Where is it in the Laws of RPGs which states that you must form one Main Character at a time?
Set up the game so you have to create two: a player character and a sidekick. Go nuts— choose whatever race, gender, and class for the pair as you see fit. You never get to play the lackey directly, but they serve as a half-decent fighting partner and they're your character's personal storage container (put a more severe restriction on Encumberance of the player, but let your partner haul everything in the world with ease).
Mind you, if they are wounded and disabled in a fight, you have to find and heal them before you can access their backpack again— an in-game incentive to keep them tuned for actual companionship rather than parking them in a corner and strolling off on your own.

Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.
Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

Re: Companion System
I think that would be good if they made the potential companions have a more developed story and character, so that they're not like every other Khajiit down the street. Getting attached to your companions as you loot caves, and then yelling as they get killed by a headless zombie would make some great gameplay. Also, if companions and followers are to become a more major part of future TES games, they really need to work on allies and companions getting in the way of your attacks =.=

Re: Companion System
I kinda don't like the idea of companions in TES for some reason, I mean I loved them in FO3 and NV, but maybe it's the fact that FO has always had a companion system. But if they must have companions the ideal would be using the same system as NV

Re: Companion System
Hellooo? Conjuration?
My Gloom Wraith's better than any legged thing.
And if I need to vent he's always around..
If they can add those companions with awesome backstories and super cool powers without imposing them on me then I don't mind.
Maybe I'll use them, but there'd need to be some good change in the AI, like if there's just one thing, let me get it, you hang back. If there's two, you take the other one. It isn't even a big change, just a good one.
2v1 in a game that uses melee attacks AND has friendly fire.
It's just difficult to manage.

Well. I personally would like to see a companion system, but I always found my Oblivion followers to be standing in the way for me when fighting... and that was a bit annoying. I hope they make them easier to avoid when fighting

Re: Companion System
What would be cool is to have a sargent to issue orders to your group. Something akin to the one quest in Shimmering Isles where you had an officer and you could issue something like defensife position, stand ground, phalanx, attack, etc. and hopefully not sending a bunch of idiots to their deaths by charging stupidly into a battle or them running off on their own to take down and ogre.

Online Co-op?
That would be awesome if not technically/functionally impossible
