Mounted Transport
I don't know if anyone's already done this, but I did check.
Anyway, so the horses in Oblivion were a bit boring (no offence Bethesda). I'd personally like to see something like the horses in Red Dead Redemption - so instead of horses being divided by colour, they could be divided by breed. Would you like to name your horse as well? What about pack animals. All of that dungeon loot weighs your character down, doesn't it?
what if we got some Skyrim specific mounts? How cool would it be to charge around on an armoured snow bear?

Re: Horses in Skyrim
The game is fantasy, but it still needs to have some level of realism. I do agree that horses should be better, but riding a snow bear? I think that is breaking the realism a bit too much.

Re: Horses in Skyrim
A snow bear per se would kind of kill the mood for me. But I'm all for Syrim-specific mounts.
In fact, they'd be unique and would be an excellent opportunity to add one more questline. And any questline involving a cool mount is good. That's like a law of physics.
'bout horses, I agree as well. Variety is good. I'm not sure how much horses are used in Skyrim or if they're used as much as they are in Cyrodiil, but a few more horses couldn't hurt anyone. That said, I won't be disappointed at all if there are only a few horses.

What about having wild horses in-game? It would be nice to see a herd when you are adventuring through the wilderness. And also, should Bethesda have mounted combat? It's a tricky question

Naming them would be fun. And packing stuff on them would be very practical. I would name mine Binky!

Re: Horses in Skyrim
The only way to name your horse in Oblivion is by console - which sucks. We should have more types of breed, some of them slow and skinny and the most expensive ones should be strong, fast, immune to the cold and be able to carry loads of weight!

Re: Horses in Skyrim
While horses were a welcome feature in Oblivion, I still feel that they could and should have been done better. The controls were twitchy and irritating, and high level characters can run faster than most horses tbh -.- Theyre only really useful when your starting out, and only then for a small amount of time before the novelty wears off and you start to realise theyre actually useless. Plus they always fast travel with you, so if you travel to a dungeon, they usually get KO'd 5 seconds later by some sort of evil beasty.
Shadowmere, however, is awesome. My horse atm is Shadowmere in Steel armour, fittest. horse. ever.

Re: Horses in Skyrim
One thing I'd really like to see from the horses is more freedom of movement. In particular, more agility while in control of the horse. One of the main reasons I almost never used a horse (even when I ran slower than one) because too often you'd be travelling along and get stuck on something, whether it be a pebble or a big rock. I'd like to see either an automated "obstacle clearing" (similar to the way horses automatically vault reasonable rocks and fences in, say, Zelda or Assassin's Creed) or allow the jump button to instruct the horse to jump.
The other would be the turning. I found it immensely counter-intuitive that the horse turned with the strafe keys whereas any other time, you use your look controls (right stick, or mouse, depending,) to turn. So many times I got disoriented riding the horse because I had inadvertently turned myself to look around in another direction while intending to turn the horse.

iv been playing red dead alot, just turned it off actually, and if bethestda was able to make horses just as they are on red dead it would be perfect. their very smooth in the animation and easy to control.

Dog sleds.
Think about it: you can get around anywhere fairly quickly, you can "dismount" more easily than from a horse. great for snowy climates, and best of all, you can carry gear on the sled, thus solving a big annoyance.

Re: Horses in Skyrim
One of the things that was extremely annoying about Oblivions horse system was that it felt so stiff and the horses were horrible to control, I've lost count of the amount of times the back up, move forward techinique has been used just to turn a corner, this is true for me and a friend.
Also I would love to see ridable bears in the game, the only problem is that it might make things too easy if there's a bear helping you out.

Re: Horses in Skyrim
I hate when you run into a dead end in Oblivion and have to back the horse, slowly slowly, like a medieval trailer. One figures one could just , ya know, turn the horse quickly before you have to back up, but NUUUUUU.

It would be good to have some mounts that weren't horses - to break the mould a bit - and dog sleds would just be pretty cool. Imagine all of the loot you could carry! The Raven wrote:Reindeer sleighs.Jedi Taters wrote:Dog sleds.

And the horse system in Red Dead was awesome. The thing I hated about horses in Oblivion was whenever you tried to turn them in another direction, they slowed to a walk for a couple of seconds before speeding back up. So please bethesda, take a leaf out of Rockstar's book...

Re: Horses in Skyrim
Did anyone notice that Oblivion horses never run at a full gallop? All they do is canter. It really ticks me off that even Shadowmere the so-called fastest horse can't get it's act together and run in a true-to-life fashion that any actual horse is capable of.
That said, what I've just covered is really just a small problem in a sea of problems, bobbing in the midst of which is a sad individual called 'Oblivion's Horse System'. I'm not even exaggerating when I say horses in that game were just AWFUL. Clunky, slow and completely indefensible due to the fact that I'm incapable of swinging a sword from it's back.
I have no doubt there will be horsies in Skyrim, but whether or not they will be half-decent is unknown to me. I have a feeling riding a mountain goat would be a better option, with Skyrim's sort of terrain. Plus it's got horns, so I don't even need to draw my sword. Just spur his goat a-- straight towards anything that decides it's going to try and eat me.

Re: Horses in Skyrim
Different horse breeds would be nice with their own strengths and weaknesses. Hors combat would awesome. i am sure with a new graphics engine they could pull of horse combat. There was a real lack of medieval realism in oblivion. Horse Archers would be cool

Re: Horses in Skyrim
Skyrim should have unique mounts, and you're completely right with the terrain that normal horses might not be able to navigate. I'd also like to be able to pull people off their horses and steal the horse. Another thing that would be good to include is having your horse come to you when you whistle or something. What kinds of unique mounts should Skyrim have?Doctor Meaticus wrote:.

Re: Horses in Skyrim
Whistling for your horse - thank you Red Dead Redemption - would be infinitely helpful for those against fast-traveling. If you don't fast travel and you lose your horse, it's gonna take a long time to find it.Demonchick344 wrote: Another thing that would be good to include is having your horse come to you when you whistle or something. Unique mounts? Some really cool guy suggested mountain goats a few posts back. What a fantastic idea. I'd also like some more fantastical ridable fauna. Maybe the dragons themselves?

I'd like to see some creatures from Nordic myth. If you could get horses like Shadowmere but representative of elements - a fire horse with flaming mane and tail would be ccol

I don't really want horses, dog sleds, snow bears or giant pumpkin mounts, I just want a pack mule.
