Weird Crash

Post by Caractacus »

After the wife and kids and I got settled into our new digs, I began leafing through some boxes from my Mother's house and found my old copy of Morrowind (non-GOTY, yes, that old) for PC. Success! Or so I thought. I used to be able to run the game just fine when I had XP, but not on Vista. I can play anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes before it crashes to desktop, and an error message tells me "atikmdag" stopped responding. I have never seen this error before. I've tried turning shadows off, lowering the frame-rate, running it in compatibility mode. Still, I get this error. Is there a workaround?

I have Windows Vista SP2
ATI Radeon 1350 graphics card (it sucks, but my good one burnt out  , but I can still play Oblivion on High with it)
4GB of RAM.

Well, it's a video card driver problem - as you probably know. You say you can play Oblivion without crashes, but not Morrowind?

Since you've got the original Morrowind, I would suggest you try to install all the updates according to

I doubt it would harm to update your video drivers, too. And a fresh install is always a fresh install > uninstall the old first, clear all traces of Morrowind, defrag your HDD and - this is somewhat disputed - check your registry.

Vista is problematic, hopeless with some laptops. Best wishes. :)
