Races in Skyrim
Anyone think that Bethesda will tweak the playable races a little bit more this time? There quite enough differences between III and IV about what perks certain races had.
Also...the lore states that there are some green(ish) valleys in Skyrim between the mountains, but do you think it's warm enough for Argonians to make a living in? I mean..in Bruma there's only one (or two if I missed one) Argonian and he always complains how cold it is.

Re: Races in Skyrim
I'm sure they will. Their new engine is probably going to be put to
the test with this release. I'd like more editing with the races, and
perhaps... Being allowed to play with Akaviri races... It's quite
conceivable for an Akaviri to be the "Dragon-Born," no?

Re: Races in Skyrim
I don't think there will be many NPC-argonians, but I think you'll be able to play as both a Khajit and an Argonian. It wouldn't be natural with lots and lots of those lizard guys crawling around, but some travelers and such would fit in. As for the races in general, I want the classes to be even more spesialized than they were in Oblivion, thus making the game much more interesting when you play it for a second or even a third time. Those traits in Oblivion was pretty useless, and easily obtainable for all chacaters.

Re: Races in Skyrim
I don't expect to see Argonians being removed from the game, that's for sure. I think the nords will definitely take the major rôle though, like Dunmer in Morrowind and Imperials in Oblivion. It would be nice to see some races like Falmer and Daedra being marked as playable, but then again, that would destroy the lore behind the series. I think something like a trait system or tweaking of attributes might be possible to get some balancing in the races, so playing an Orcish assassin won't be as hard as it was before.

Re: Races in Skyrim
I definitely hope the races get a bit more special. Currently the Bretons blend in quite a bit with the Imperial population, and so forth. And if Bethesda has listened to modders any, they may know we want all existing race out there playable
If they made less gameplay stuff depend on your race it would be easier for them to do.

Seeing how the Western Reach is a contested area between Skyrim and High Rock, it would nice to see some Reachmen. It will also be interesting to see if the Greybeards make an appearance.

In a large city, I'm sure the general population of Argonians will be Nobles, warm and fuzzy in their mansions. Or others who don't venture out of their homes much.

Re: Races in Skyrim
It would be cool if they brought in a completely new playable race that came from a previously unknown distant land. Even to be able to play as the akavir would be good. Not sure if those to would be able to work though

Re: Races in Skyrim
If there aren't any Argonians in Skyrim, I'll lead a team of modders to add them.
But chances are that they'll be there.
Though I would like more difference between the races. Meaning that each race has a specialty (stealth, magic and combat) and that this makes for advantages in that field. Instead of an Orc becoming as adept in stealth as a Wood Elf.

I just care about the voices being different from the other, I don't want the altmer, bosmer, and the dunmer sounding all the same
I love playing as Dunmer, and my Dunmer in oblivion looks awesome, with his red hair unique to a dunmer, and stuff like that.

Re: Races in Skyrim
That would be cool to see the Falmer return to Tamriel, but is probably unlikely. The Ayleids never appeared in Oblivion. The Falmer were probably drove to extinction like the Ayleids were, with few sightings centuries later.

Re: Races in Skyrim
If the main quest is focused around an Akaviri invasion, then what if there was a questline where you played as an Akaviri invader that was unlocked after completing the main quest? It would take place during the same timeframe as the main quest and would follow the missions assigned to an Akaviri soldier.DaKizmasta wrote:It would be cool if they brought in a completely new playable race that came from a previously unknown distant land. I want the Dark Elves' proper voices back. They sounded whiny and annoying in Oblivion.

Bruma's head of the mages guild is an argonian... well, in one of the earlier games (one of the spin-offs I think) it was possible to play as an argonian in Skyrim.FrostyInferno016 wrote:Anyone think that Bethesda will tweak the playable races a little bit more this time? I think that they should let every race be playable.

Re: Races in Skyrim
There aren't any Argonians at all in the Mages Guild in Bruma. You're thinking of Chorrol or Bravil, perhaps? The woman in Bruma is an Imperial or Breton or something (I can't recall, and they all look the same). I think Breton, actually.the Savage Hippie wrote:Bruma's head of the mages guild is an argonian...
Anyway, I think an interesting idea would be to have different versions of the races. For examples, there are different races within the races, just look at the Khajiit for example in the different games. In Arena they look like Nords, in Morrowind they have those crazy legs so you can't equip boots, and in Oblivion they look like furry Imperials with tails. It'd be interesting to be able to choose and each has different benefits and whatnot.
I just hope I didn't totally screw up that stuff I just said. Stupid broken brain, and I'm leaving again so I don't have time to make sure my "facts" are straight on the wiki. Normally I'd post in the bye thread, but I'm leaving now so.. later guys. Maybe I'll be back soon. Peace for now.

Re: Races in Skyrim
I'm pretty sure you'll be able to play as an Argonian in Skyrim, and if not, I'm going to... Well, I'll have to come up with some empty threat to type here, to show how upset I would be.
Oh, and I don't think they should start throwing in races you haven't been able to play as before, or even seen. I think the thing with the races you never see, but only reads/hears about, is just that you never see them. Think about it, imagine if Argonian never where playable, and you couldn't meet them in any game.
You just hear stories about strange lizard men, lurking in the swamps of Black Marsh... No one really knows what they look like, or if they even exist, but you meet people who claims to have traveled through Black Marsh and survived, telling about strange eyes always looking at him from below the surface of the swamp waters... Sometimes they thought someone where behind them, but when they turned around, no one was there, but they managed to spot some weird footprints on the ground behind him, before dashing off into the depths of the swamp...
See where I'm getting at? That might've been what you'd hear if Argonians wasn't playable, but now that they are, they're just some giant lizards, walking on two legs as humans. The mystery about them is kinda ruined, just as Akaviri races' mystery would be, if they were playable. Dunno if it makes any sense to you guys...
Sorry for the long post, seems I got carried away with that little story.

The number of playable races is fine. I agree with Kalle, it would kind of ruin things if you got to play as Tsaesci or Tang Mo it would ruin all the mystery.

I'd like to see the voice-work overhauled for the majority of the races.
Wouldn't it be fun to see the Falmer make at least an appearance?

Re: Races in Skyrim
I would imagine that Bethesda would just "patch" the lore again. You know, just invent a new species of Argonian. I can actually do that for them. Here:
"The Sesh'ar Argonians are the most common breed found in Skyrim. They have thin, reptilian skin, which is deficient to keep the cold out. Because of this, evolution has forced them to grow a layer of fat under their skin to be able to survive. This lets them inhabit the freezing mountains of Skyrim, but makes them somewhat slow and clumsy compared to other breeds. It also gives them the appearance of green walruses on legs."
I hope I didn't mess up my ideas of reptile metabolism. Probably did. Anyways, now that I've done some of Bethesda's work for them, I hope they can release Skyrim a few seconds earlier
Anyways, I'm not very nervous about races dissapearing. Despite everything, Bethesda has always kept the same "Model" of gameplay, even if it meant "Tweaking" the lore a little. In case of extreme need, they'll just ignore all logic and give lizards the ability to survive in blizzards.
As for new races... I don't know. On the one hand, suddenly being able to play as a previously unknown race would be kinda weak on the lore side. If Oblivion ended with the reappearence of the Falmer, for instance, it would make sense. But even if Skyrim's an Akaviri invasion, it wouldn't make sense to play as an Akaviri until the next game (As in, the game after Skyrim, which a friend of mine that works in Bethesda told me would be called TES VI: Quest for the Daedric Marshmellow), and that's just if Skyrim ends in peace between the Akaviris and Tamriel.
