Firefox Search Engines

Post by mikekearn »

Hey all, I've been a member of the Wiki site for a while, but this is the first time I've ventured into the forums. I don't know how many use Firefox, but as an avid lover of the program, I noticed that the Search Engine plugin for The UESP doesn't work. When I go to any of the pages and choose a search engine, I get the option to download one for UESP, and it doesn't work.

Does anyone know what's wrong with it, or why it won't download for me? I ended up getting one somewhere else that works fine, but I was curious. Thanks. :)

The one i got from the Mycroft project works fine for me - make sure you've got the latest version of any plugin. Mycroft is pretty good as a central collection of search engine plugins.

If something's wrong with a search plugin it's probably because it's requesting the wrong URL (most likely because the site has changed URLs without adding redirects, hence breaking links; therefore: linkrot). Either that or it uses invalid code (which firefox won't understand) thus won't work - it all depends on how exactly it doesn't work.

As for firefox, it's about 25% now depending on who's statistics you go by. Great browser, does very well on both major fronts; great rendering engine and a highly customisable interface - you can make it your own browser which is what i personally love, being able to change any behaviour i don't like and make it work the way i want.

But personally I'm not fussy which browser people use, just as long as it's not IE. All the modern/sophisticated ones are pretty good on the standards support front - which is important for allowing the web to progress - as long as developers keep accomodating IE with workarounds (I am a web dev, so I'm painfully aware of the various issues) IE will continue to hold the web back from it's full potential.

If you want to make your own seach engine plugins it's actually quite easy - a doddle if you've got any HTML experience.
There's some good documentation and links to validation on the mycroft site.
I've made quite a couple myself now for various different sites, it doesn't take long to make each one.
