Multiplayer?
I have no idea if this old discussion, but im sure im not the only one to imagine oblivion online.
i know theres no plan for it, making this this completely hypothetical,
but i wonder what anyone else thinks?
what do you think it would be like? free battle, like run around and strike whatever you wish, or would you have to accept a battle?
could every player buy a house?
the wonder..

Re: Multiplayer?
Know that one or two modders tried to do it, but it seemed like they abandoned their projects or they're half finished. I do know that i wod want to one hit one if my friends. That would be hilarious

NO!!!, an oblivion MMO would ruin it... it would slowly turn into almost the same style game as WoW.

Re: Multiplayer?
Agreed. I dunno about WoW, I play FFXI though, and the elitists, the [&@%!] that are usually men IRL, and the RMT (Real Money Trading), all this crap would ruin Oblivion. I love Oblivion because it is set up, kinda like an MMO.. Massive 'world map' field area with random locations, some well known, some hidden, many, MANY optional quests, so many that you can't really think of all of them off the top of your head, etc. but most of all I love the lack of competition, I love the independence. TBCH, These forums have left me stunned. Not once have I heard "Pfft! You use Monkeypants? You f**king suck!" I haven't seen anyone called a 'noob', there's no rude criticism that usually presents itself on an MMO forum, and that's part of why I love Oblivion. I haven't quit FFXI, and don't plan to, I love it too, I take the good with the bad. But turning Oblivion to an MMO, as Sonix said, would ruin it.Sonixboom wrote:NO!!!, an oblivion MMO would ruin it... it would slowly turn into almost the same style game as WoW.

P.S. Yes, I use Monkeypants. No, I don't know why.

Re: Multiplayer?
Heh heh, Monkeypants
I'll be honest, I'd be somewhat open to the idea of multiplayer, but NOT MMO. The difference? I think it would be great to go questing with 3 or 4 or your friends in an environment that's otherwise like the Oblivion we know and love. If you keep the multiplayer limited, and you get to pick who you play with, I think it could work. But no MMO please!

Re: Multiplayer?
MMo is a great way of earning money if TESMMO can compete with all the well established ones out there (i personally think it'll fall flat on its aaaarse up against the likes of evercrack, WoW and warhammer cos the TES universe isnt anything special in itself - its the way they cram the detail in which sets TES out head and shoulders above the competition)
but MMO loses the extraordinarily huge console market and also destroys the number 1 pull of the TES series, which is the moddable highly detailed immersive single player world which they've spent so much time building up. If they did go MMO it would have to be as a side project and tbh fallout is probably far better suited to MMO cos it will be able to corner the market for alternate 50's realities MMO's
Plus, the kids at Bethesda are games nerds like us, they love getting into the nitty gritty of lore, plotlines, daedric politics etc so they're probably going to want to keep that whole thing going TES feels like a labour of love to me, thats why i like it so much and thats why they should always make the single player games
i think that there will always be a place for a game which concentrates solely on the single player experience, essentially without the online/mp hindrances, you can only get a feel for state of the art immersion with the sp

Re: Multiplayer?
i wasnt leaning toward MMO,
over time ive noticed our community's feeling toward it. not good.
i just wonder what it would be like to have at least one other human controlled player.
i feel i would get more use out of spells. and have to avoid having other spells cast at me.
like it would be cool if, i had a house, and my detect life spell picked up a stranger wandering around.
especially becuase i would pick up any assassins in my house who are invisible or chameleon waiting for me,
it just seems like it would be a crazy experience if there was one enemy who was not computer programmed to react based on my actions.
im not complaining on what oblivion offers now, i love it just as much as the next player,
but i do often wonder what it would be. i mean, alot of us wonder "what if oblivion was in real-life", well having 2-3 human controlled players in a game would be pretttty interesting to me.
maybe another way to say it would be,
a challenge for a true test of skill, kinda.

Perhaps a mode where you could fight to the death using a character of yours against another players character in the arena, optional and has no effect on single player whatsoever.
That WOULD be cool.

Yeah...
Good thing bows pass damage reflect
But Oblivion is too imbalanced to allow multiplayer, you can enchant your character to godhood. Even without that, there's 85% damage reduction which is ridiculous.

Still, it would be fun to play with friends, obviously you'd have to agree on what exploits are allowed, maybe even have themed battles, like having 100% reflect and battling with bows only.krisCrash wrote:Yeah...

I think Co-op would fit Oblivion nicely. Even if it is only 2-player. It's be cool to be the tank (I'm always a tank) and have an archer, mage and rogue supporting you.

With "gametypes" like FFA, Two teams and multi teams (3 or more) like in the roman arenas... and maybe co-op against monsters

Re: Multiplayer?
The most amount of multi player i would tolerate is a co-op which you can allow. A multi-player ES game would be ruined because of the various other people. for one you won't be the only "special" person in the world. In all the ES games you were "The champion of Cyrodill" or something to that effect. And it would rather depressing to see the time line read-"The Akaviri invasion was put to a halt because of the combined efforts of many adventurers"
I'm not arrogant. I'm insecure.

Champion of Cyrodil isn't even that grand, in Morrowind your the reincarnate of the ancient Chimer warlord Indoril nerevar set to destroy the false gods and battle the Daedra Lord Hircine(instead of letting some dragon do all the work..). That there is special.
Multiplayer would be cool if the game was made harder for the added players, make it so you have to rely on your team mates skills in order to advance and not be decimated by the ridiculously powerful monsters.

Re: Multiplayer?
I don't think an Elder Scrolls MMO would be a bad idea at all. I think it could expand the gameplay and add aspects to it that are not possible through any other avenue. But I think there should be restrictions. Such as certain areas specifically designated for Player versus Player combat. For example, perhaps the Arena would be a place for players to take part in combat versus each other in single combat or in multiple player combat. I would not like a sort of free-for-all world where any player can walk up and just kill any player, how would you feel if your level 1 roleplay character that you just started walked out of the sewers just to be met by a level 40 warrior in full daedric who decided to just kill you for kicks and giggles? No, there would have to be restrictions and organization to it, but I think it would add many great aspects to the gameplay. Just imagine the community that would be created with an Elder Scrolls MMO, trade between players, group questing, maybe certain quests/questlines that can only be done or even unlocked by completing a task with another player? Imagine completing the main quest with your best friend as a team. Imagine the possibilities of a world with other characters who have living, thinking human beings controlling them. The possibilities are endless. Of course, I would also like to see that online play be completely optional. If you want to explore the world and complete your tasks on your own, you simply go to the settings/options menu or wherever and change it. Think of any MMO that is widely known and look at all the great things about it, those are all things that could be done with equal, if not greater, success through an Elder Scrolls game.

But then there wouldn't be such as immersive story if it's all in text. MMO's have lots of restrictions. Such as restricted graphics to allow more players to run the game. Limited gameplay: you cant run a physics engine very well on a MMO. Limited Story: I don't like my quests scolling as text and it'd be a step down from TES4. TES has always been single player. It'd be best if it stayed that way. But I'd welcome Co-op.
EDIT: This has kind of turned into a TES5 hope thread. Perhaps we should get back ontopic.

Re: Multiplayer?
Those are all valid points, but as I said, I would like to see it as an optional choice to play in an online environment. To deal with whatever restrictions they need to impose to make that possible in order to experience the benefits of that form of gameplay is what would make it a viable choice for me, personally.Spiney wrote:But then there wouldn't be such as immersive story if it's all in text. In response to these comments, firstly, I just want to say that 100% chameleon can be overcome with a simple detect life spell/enchantment, but I agree that you would have some players who would like to choose to battle using those tactics, but that's where the restrictions and organization I mentioned in my earlier post comes in, I don't think it would be all that difficult to put restrictions on things like that, for example, with the arena questline being the way it is where you can only compete in arena combat when wearing the arena's raiments, or possibly making the combatants who wish to fight agree on a set of rules/restrictions to be set during their battle, such as choosing no food, or no potions, or no spells, or anything else they would like to choose to exclude from their battle. And I do not think it would be too difficult for certain umbrella restrictions to be set in place at all times unless chosen by the combatants, such as restrictions on the magnitude of reflect damage/spells enchantments/spells, among others.krisCrash wrote:Yeah...

There is no negative side-effect to a multiplayer/MMO gamestyle for the next TES game that comes to my mind that cannot be solved and I would thoroughly enjoy it. I very much hope there is some form of multiplayer gameplay for TES V.
