UESP-crashes
is it just me or have the wiki and forums been crashing an awful lot recently this is the first time I have been able to log on for more than 15 seconds
I think that the Admin needs to actually be on the forums and further more needs to update the forums with the Patch releases by phpbb. and also the whole server needs to be refreshed backed up cleaned out and restored.

I am almost positive it is a server problem and not a forum problem. I have noticed this passed week that both sites are unavailable from about 2 pm to 4 pm central time, sometimes longer. I have read where Nephele(wiki admin) says that the biggest problem is usually increased traffic at those times. So most likely a server problem and Daveh has the most control there. I believe a question of the situation needs to be posed on the wiki. I see now that you(MHL) are more experienced with the wiki these days, could you bring this up to them or would you like me to?

why don't you because I think you could more accurately address this situation and I have been posting a good amount of messages on Nephele's talk addressing mainly the forums and I don't want to become a nuisanceBear wrote:I am almost positive it is a server problem and not a forum problem. Here is the reply to my question......
Yep, it's been a problem since Monday and has been getting gradually worse. Basically, a glitch was triggered last Sunday night that has decreased the amount of traffic that the server can handle. Fixing it requires Daveh's intervention, and I've informed him about the situation (just a couple of hours ago). Unfortunately, he's on vacation right now in some part of the world that doesn't even have cell-phone access, so I have no idea when he'll be able to do anything. In the meantime, the site will be basically inaccessible whenever the site gets too much traffic. Unfortunately, that means there are likely to be some pretty prolonged outages over this weekend
There's not really too much anyone else can do, other than avoid using the site when it gets overloaded. --NepheleTalk 13:47, 13 July 2007 (EDT)

Not that it has a whole lot to do with this thread but more the forums in general.
http://www.uesp.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php ... sc&start=0
It is actaully pretty good information about the forums themselves when they started(they're not that old). Great reading for newcomers I think, I know I read it after joining. I always advocate a little re(search), not necessarily necro posting tho.
There are only 4 current pages on the general forums, and this link is about half way on the 3rd page. The situation is not always good when there is only one person in charge of everything(wiki and forums by server control). The other side is that I know about being busy with my own life and can sympathize.
He is on vacation. Nothing can really be done till he gets back. Patience is not easy when most everything can be at your fingertips in virtual seconds. It seems to me that Daveh never really expected the forums to get this far. What I mean is that there is enough people here on a daily basis now to warrant a few upgrades IMO. Like maybe a new skin, the use of Avatars, etc.... There is now an active mod representation that hasn't been here before. I know that I have a hard time with not being able to even lurk at the forums when the site is down. I try to come here as often as time allows. Things are getting better, with a little patience; hopefully we can get more accessability and get a solution to this server problem.
One thing I would like to add, not trying to sound to much like a plug; is that I've read on the wiki before that Daveh does this mostly or all out of pocket. He has asked whether people would like to help support and then came up with the deal of outside advertising on the wiki. I am not asking anyone to help, just throwing out some information that I know. Any info can be found on the wiki itself.
I think we have a pretty good forum and community here. A special thanks to Codex and MHL for wanting to help out, it was seriously needed IMO. Please be a little patient with the situation at hand, I hope we can get a few upgrades and have some good times discussing the topics for which we are here.
Happy posting,
Bear

With the exception of the spambots, things really wern't that bad, until around two months ago, say the middle of may.
One thing I've noticed, we've had alot more sig images of late. They take up bandwidth. Avatars only mean more bandwidth usage. More elaborate Skins also use more bandwidth.
Post Flooding doesn't help much either.

Agreed! Although, I think those things are to be expected. Like I said, I don't think Daveh really intended for the forums to get this far, but here they are now. I have asked a few users to scale down their sigs before and recommend it to be kept fairly low for the time being. I would also like to see more links to pics being given, then actually posting them directly to the forums. That should help save some space and time. The community itself has become quite a bit larger tho, and with growth a bit of expansion should be necessary IMO. I would like to see us progress to further stages of development. That is not my only function and goal here, but I do have a dream!

while the forum is great as it is (with the exception of the current bug), i agree with bear, some improvements could be made. i mean, i discovered the site 3 days ago, and i enjoy it and get so much info out of it, i got like 80 or more posts already. even if he never sees this, my sincere congrats to dave for creating this, and all hopes that he will be back soon
