Ulysses by James Joyce. It's 99% impossible to read and I've barely got past the first 10 pages, but I want to conquer it. Expect mild frustration and insanity from here on out.

Because I have never heard of it, why is it so hard to read? Does it use big words that your primitive mind can't handle or just boring as all get out?Veckatimest wrote:Ulysses by James Joyce. Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
You could have asked more politely, but it's because Joyce writes in a unique way. He'll be going on about one thing, and then another thought jumps into his head when he writes. It means there are about five different stories going on at once and it keeps switching between them in the blink of an eye. This makes it very difficult to read, but once you get used to it it's a very good story.Venger the Templar wrote:Because I have never heard of it, why is it so hard to read? I apologize for the disruption. It was meant to be crudely humorous in a sarcastic way. If you think I wrote to offend, wait ill I actually do one day. Again, sorry for sounding so condescending.Drethelis wrote:I don't mean to intrude on your business, but that was really rude.Venger the Templar wrote:Because I have never heard of it, why is it so hard to read? Reading nothing at the moment. Been procrastinating 'Oliver Twist' and 'Ivanhoe'. Will have to read this for school though, and a portuguese play.

Trainspotting atm. But unfortunately I usually read at night in bed, and with my reading lamp broken I don't get around to doing much. Last book I read was "One Day" one of the best books I've ever read.

I've just finished the dictionary. The Zebra did it.
I'm really in to medical pages on Wikipedia right now. I'll just think of a random condition and read about it. The depth to that site is awe inspiring.
The last book I read was Ronnie. Ronnie O'Sullivan's first autobiography. I was always dubious about him but it helped me understand the character that he is and it also helped my Snooker.

Well, I left my copy of The Drawing of the Three on my plane when I came back from Virginia, so now I need to reacquire a copy of it. That or I'll jump ahead to The Wastelands.

Re: What are you reading.
I like fantasy, but not all fantasy (I am a picky person).
Right now Im reading Shelters of Stone by Jean M. Auel. The whole Clan of the Cave Bear series is stuffed with passionate intercourse, but I like it.

Right now I'm reading Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, but my all-time favourite book is A Scanner Darkly by Philip K. Dick. My signature is an abridged quote from it.
I also read Misery by Stephen King by recommendation not too long ago and it was really good. I hadn't read much Stephen King before that, but I've come to think of him as a very skilled writer. I also suggest The Shining, another good Stephen King novel, if you're into horror. Very different from the Stanley Kubrick film if you've seen it.

Finishing the last of the "Emperor" series by Conn Iggulden. It chronicles Julius Caesar's life (with a few fictional liberties). Pretty good series.
And on the eighth day, God created Thermodynamics, and it was good.

I'm quite like historical novels. Finished "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett a while ago. Great series, and highly recommended if you like that genre.

I'm reading Homer's Iliad. Well, I'm supposed to. It's not that I'm not looking forward to it, or that I don't utterly enjoy the Greek epic, it's just that when I "have" to do something, it loses all its appeal
It's a psychological thing.

Re: What are you reading.
I can't say I'm particularly fond of the series Earth's Children. I do find the first book interesting, but the rest.. nah. The main characters are almost flawless, and the information (about flora, fauna etc.) is not merged smoothly with the plot. At least that's what I think.Argonanza wrote:Right now Im reading Shelters of Stone by Jean M. Auel. The whole Clan of the Cave Bear series is stuffed with passionate intercourse, but I like it.
I know exactly what you mean. Whenever I've been assigned to read a specific book in school, it's taken ages to get through it. But when I choose a book myself, it almost always ends too quickly. :/Leilah wrote:it's just that when I "have" to do something, it loses all its appealIt's a psychological thing.
I don't read anything at the moment, because I finished my latest book yesterday and have yet to pick up a new one.
