There are two death metal bands that I'll listen to on occasion. One is Ministry, because Psalm 69 is a pretty neat album.

The other is Dethklok.

... Yeah =U
It's been good travelling with you, Warden. Don't get lost in the shuffle now.

Agreed, I've meant to get Crack The Skye for ages.
It's very good. I have it and Leviathan (Moby Dick FTW). I bought a Mastodon shirt yesterday with The Infernal City, since I thought it would cost more and had some leftover moola. It's epic.

When it comes to Metal music, I take it on a song by song basis.

Also, you cant kill The Metal; The Metal will live on.

I listen to it, but I'm not a big fan of it. Fear Factory(first album), Bloodbath, and Novembers Doom are the only bands I listen to.

Yay metal! I just seen this thread, and got super excited. I loves me some Bloodbath, and some Death. Morbid Angel is quite amazing to me, and Dethklok makes me quite happy too.

I recently got into GWAR, and just found out they're playing near me in June. I'm trying to get tickets.

I saw GWAR live several years ago. They are absolutely brilliant and insane and I'm pretty sure they should be locked up, but it was awesome. Blood spraying all over the audience, ridiculous costumes.. they know how to entertain. It was fun because it was a huge ordeal with about 40 bands playing. Maybe some of you are familiar with Sounds of the Underground. It was one of the few things that drew me outside for an extended amount of time, specifically an entire day. It was awesome.

If I listen to Death Metal, it's usually more towards the Melodic side of the line. But, if there's one thing that'll turn me off in a heartbeat, it's the "death metal growl". It's something I can only describe as putting a microphone in the mouth of a snarling, rabid, rottweiler. Screaming is fine. The half-scream/half-singing is fine. Hell, I've heard some that sounded like it was a half-snarl/growl and half-scream, and that was ok. But that straight growling gets me. Just can't listen to it.

But, there's one step worse... and I've only ever heard one band do it; Cradle of Filth. I don't recall the song's title, as it was many years ago... but he did this screech that could only be described as strangling a hawk. I haven't listened to the band since, despite the generally good things I hear about them from people who enjoy that style of music. I've heard they've largely dropped that sort of thing in recent years, so I may have to give 'em a second listen. I just hope they don't do that screech again.

And hey, I saw a reference to Meshuggah! Yay! Always a favorite, along with In Flames and Soilwork. Guilty of using those guys as my dungeon diving soundtracks, by running my iPod through my gaming chair. :D

I think you're mistaken about the hawk, but I know exactly what you mean. That sound.. it can only be one thing. The death cry of a pterodactyl. I know this sound all too well. See, that GWAR show I mentioned with the 40 other bands? Yes well, about 35 of those other bands apparently had singers who'd replaced their vocal chords with those of pterodactyls. It was basically my brother and I making fun of most of the bands, then randomly in the middle enjoying one, then making fun of them. I think we liked, really liked, about two bands. Then there was a few others that were okay, then the rest were just shrieking. The worst for me is the drumming, the mindless non-sensical "I can beat the bass drum faster than you" beat that isn't even a beat, just randomly hitting tom toms and cymbals. It's terrible.

Oh man, another poor soul who's had the misfortune of hearing something like what I did. And yeah, I've heard those drummers before too. He might as well just headbang into the drum kit. It'd sound about the same, just perhaps a bit slower.

You can find really crappy musicians in any style of music, though. But oh man, when the metal artists are crappy... they're REALLY crappy. Why just do it all wrong, when you can overdo it?

Retarded growling, I can understand. But in a song like this, I don't think regular singing would work.

And if anything, I prefer growling over screaming. Look at how high my pitches go!

I agree, regular singing just wouldn't have come out right with that song. Sounded good, though.

Also, I went digging around Youtube for Cradle of Filth, see if I could find anything that didn't sound like what I heard years ago, and here's what I found: Cradle of Filth - Temptation

Someone help me, I actually like this song! *panics* :Twisted Evil:

Err, that was just awful :P. Glam metal gone violently wrong. :( And the sound quality was trash, to top it all off! :|

On an unrelated note... I'm quickly getting addicted to Cradle of Filth's Thornography album... From a band I once couldn't stand to this. How this happened, I don't know. :P

I think you were on to something, Biotechnic. There's a senseless type of growling that just ruins a song. But, on the flip side of it, some songs/styles of music wouldn't sound right done any other way. The ones that really get me are the ones where I can't hear anything over the guy growling. The whole song sounds like a kennel full of rabid, snarling rottweilers... Can't hear any of the musicians behind him over his manic growling.

But when it's just the way the song's vocals are done, and I can still hear everything else going on, then it's fine. I like to hear everything going on, not just one manic retard with the vocals of a rottweiler. Not sure about screeching, though. A short burst (for effect) I can handle, but sustained screeching just grates my nerves. :P

Screaming is pretty well in the same boat as growling. It'll either sound like that's how the song should be done, or some of the worst junk you've heard. It also has the nasty side effect, when overdone, to drown everything else out. Can't hear a damn thing over the guy with the mic screaming.

But hey, that's music for ya. Everyone's got a preference. :D

And on topic, how do you think death metal came about? Was it just extreme anger? Or did some one in a standard metal group have a really bad sore throat?
