Pronunciation of 'Hlaalu'

Post by Ilikecorn »

Note- This will use IPA characters and/or X-SAMPA because I have no help explaining otherwise.
X-SAMPA is spaced out because this site interprets as a URL link.
Hope this topic hasn't been answered already!
Hi! I have been playing Morrowind on/off for years, and have always wondered how to pronounce the word 'Hlaalu'.
I have always been pronouncing it /ɬeɪ.lu/ (in X-SAMPA K e I . l u ) but now wonder if lore pronounces it /leɪ.lu/
(in X-SAMPA l e I . l u ) or /hleɪ.lu/ (in X-SAMPA h l e I . l u ) or even a different pronunciation.
I have searched for an NPC who utters that word to no avail. Hope it isn't too difficult a question.

I've always thought it was 'Ha-laa-loo'.

Welcome, Liker of Corn.

I, and characters in Morrowind, pronounce it "Hla-Loo."

I pronounce it Hla-loo, but the Hla bit kind of sounds like you're producing phlegm in the back of your throat.

I pronounce the first bit like the welsh 'll', as in Lloyd.

hla-loo, and I think NPCs either in this game or Oblivion pronounce it that way as well.
“Fine day” said the young man.

“Gods!” hollered Zaki, sending the young man flying with a well-placed punch, and dashing away.

agreed, though I think of it more as a little hiccup or breath rather than phlegm...kinda like your saying Huh, and then switch words

Also, if I may add, Falanu Hlaalu pronounces Hlaalu as 'Hla-loo' I do believe.

thx for all the replies! :) I EVENTUALLY managed to find someone who said it (in a council building after entering and re-entering several times) and it sounds like they say /hlɑː.lu/. So much for my fanciful pronunciations :P (I pronounce it like Tom10320, I seem to be a bit out of touch with my explanation of phonetics to the general population. I blame my co-workers  ).

I just simply don't pronounce it XD!
If I ever had to say it out loud, I'd refer to it as "that honolulu place"
people automatically know where I'm talking about, lol

If you're the grandmaster of House Hlaalu (in Morrowind, of course) some people in Mournhold adress you as such, and you can clearly hear them pronounce it hlah-loo...
