coooool, bro. Pass the herb.
And when things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.

I thought the bore extractor (the bulging thingy you see on the middle of the main gun's barrel) was there to prevent that.Dark Lord wrote:Guys...

And you know they don't use the rear smoke generator ever since they began using jet fuel in those things (diesel vaporized into white smoke, but JP-8 catches fire instead).
That said, I'd chime in and mention it'd be hard to curtail global warming if everyone keeps jetting around and blowing stuff up in continuous global warfare, especially if the aim of said warfare is to secure further petroleum resources.

Stop derailing my thread, you oiks!
Well, that's pretty obvious. Maybe not necessarily the jetting around bit though - did you know that a full Boeing 747 uses less fuel per passenger than most cars?Dark Spark wrote:

However, airliners often travel with less than a full load of passengers.r wrote:...did you know that a full Boeing 747 uses less fuel per passenger than most cars?

Re: I've just had a really good idea
Even if they do, they probably still work out more energy-efficient per passenger than, say, a Mercedes C-Class.

I wonder how good old-fashioned zeppelins would do in this day and age.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
The Hindenburg blew up because it had a friggin' SMOKING SECTION and they'd accidentally failed at properly treating some of the covering or something. I think the former actually didn't do much, but it's still silly.
Also we could use Helium rather than Hydrogen.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
It was an accident waiting to happen - hydrogen is far too dangerous. Also there was a recent item on Top Gear involving James May in a caravan attached to an airship that leads me to believe that it isn't the way forward.Dogmantra wrote:The Hindenburg blew up because it had a friggin' SMOKING SECTION and they'd accidentally failed at properly treating some of the covering or something. If you look at loads of previous zepplins, they worked fine, being held up by Hydrogen. I believe there was an investigation done, and it was a fault with the covering that made it explode or something.

I still think that flying around in an enormous balloon filled with a highly explosive gas is just tempting fate.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
The U.S. is currently making blimps with electric motors that are intended for flights that'll last for years, not hours. Granted, it's not exactly the fastest thing in the skies, but want to reduce greenhouse emissions? Aerostatic lift for teh win!
Aviation Fun Fact: did you know the word 'airplane' isn't a name describing what the vehicle is, but rather it describes how the vehicle flies through the air? You basically have two kinds of flying machines: aerostats and aeroplanes. An aerostat flies because its static pressure is lighter than the air it displaces. An aeroplane flies because its wings are actually blades that will "plane" the air downwards in order to push the machine up into the air.
Of course, helicopters fly because of the rotor blades above the machine: they are designed to chop up invisible fairies that are always around us. The pulverized fairy dust then falls onto the helicopter and causes it to float into the air.
