I've just had a really good idea
The main consequence of global warming seems to be that the ice caps are melting and the oceans are expanding because of some pesky law of thermodynamics, which is going to flood anywhere that's vaguely close to the sea. This obviously means that there is too much water on the planet.
So, why don't we get rid of it? How hard can it be to dump a few million gallons of water into space? We can just stick one end of a really long hosepipe in the sea and put the other end in space, and since the vacuum of space will create a pressure differential the water will be sucked up the pipe and out into space. Obviously the laws of gravity mean that the hosepipe will fall back down to Earth, and hooking it around the Moon won't work because it'll all just get tangled up, so I've hit upon the equally brilliant idea of attaching it to a geostationary satellite. Then, if we ever need a bit more water on the planet, we send a non-geostationary satellite up with a similar setup to the pint glass I used to change the water in the fishtank earlier.
I reckon a modern-day Isambard Kingdom Brunel could build this setup in about a week, with a hammer.
The reason I've posted this is because the forum's been quite quiet today so I expect to wake up tomorrow to find 50 posts explaining why this is a stupid idea and it will never work.

'Tis stupid, silly.
The fact isn't that the ice will make too much water, the absence of the doesn't cool the water- which will ruin many eco-systems without the income of cold water. That will be bad.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
If we did this wouldn't all the water just freeze in the pipe as it would go into space and it it succeeded and all froze in space how would we get it back down if there was a serious problem?

I am just having a problem with gravity.
All that water would have to come down and it would turn into steam on reentry.

Haha! Good one Ace!
No, I think we should:
A. Take giant chunks of ice out of Antarctica
B. Melt them for drinking water
So therefore we have solved the water problem and global warming!
Polar Bears and Penguins would suffer but hey, it's them or us.

We could also build a bunch of mini satellites and position them around our orbit to shade parts of the planet and cool us down.

Why not use all this water to fuel the ever-magnificent fusion reactors that the visionaries of science fiction have promised us? Come to think of it, where in hell is my flying car!?

I like Futurama's solution. Push the planet slightly away from the sun. I'd be happy with an extra week or two. As long as they are holidays of course.
@ Darklord: yeah I heard of that one. they reflect the light or something? They also had these weird boats... I forget. I love weird inventions though. I want heaps of them made, so it feels like we are in a fantasy land! Like that helium bus I heard a guy talking about on tv, where it moves by the helium and gravity, when we sit on the seats that dangle below! It was something like that anyway. Sorry I am no scientist. But I'd love to see them floating around the city.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
Apparently visible airborne pollution (so smoke and exhaust fumes) reflects incoming sunlight and creates 'global dimming' which is cooling the planet down. If this didn't happen global warming would probably be much worse now. So all these eco-mentalists driving around in their Priuses, fair-trade G-Whizzes and ethnic peace bicycles are actually making global warming worse. I love the fact that to stop global warming we all need to burn lots of stuff and drive cars that might just do 10mpg if you drive like an undertaker, or get out and push. So I'm off to buy a Ferrari.Dark Lord wrote:We could also build a bunch of mini satellites and position them around our orbit to shade parts of the planet and cool us down.

But then the water would still exist. It will find its way back to the sea eventually.Coulsonji wrote:Haha! Good one Ace!

My solution to the water problem is even better. Build reservoirs in high places and connect them to low places by pipes. I imagine the deserts of Ethiopia are only a few hundred feet above sea level, if that, whereas there's plenty of mountains around there. And since the reservoirs are higher than where the water is needed you don't even need a pump, just some gravity. Again, I reckon Brunel could have that going in about a week.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
It's not a hoax, it's definitely happening, but 99% of the response to it is scaremongering. If the Kyoto agreement is fulfilled and every country in the world reduces their carbon emissions by 2000% or whatever it is, it will buy us another 6 years. So we'll all melt in the year 2106 instead of 2100.

Re: I've just had a really good idea
I say bring on Global Warming. If it's going to happen anyway, why does it matter if it happens early? Sure, we aren't prepared, but then maybe we should be. People 200 years ago had no concept of global warming, and they saw no need to be prepared. We know it's happening, and yet we still aren't prepared. Where's the logic in that?

I agree with Tommy boy. I'm going to be dead before global warming comes to get me,
so why try? I just won't have kids. There's a solution for you right there. Stop having kids,
and we'll all be dead before the sun explodes.

Not having kids will probably be all we need to stop it anyway haha.
Re: I've just had a really good idea
I've heard that we might get a minor ice-age soon, due to the sun's inactivity or something...

Cool idea r, just one criticism...
Why are you trying to stop something that doesn't threaten anything? Global warming will be fine. Yes, we might be speeding it up a little bit, but it is a completely natural process. People are just being selectively blind, because our data about temperature and CO2 levels only go back as far as we had polar ice caps. Newsflash, global-warming-will-kill-us-all-guys-and-guyettes, the world survived without ice caps before!
Now if you're Greg Keyes, then I understand that you might be a bit worried, but Greg, if you're reading this, things are not as bad as you think. A tree falling in the forest does not fell the entire forest.

I know, but most people don't realise this. I'd rather do this than be told by a bunch of eco-Communists that I'm not allowed to have a car, go on holiday or turn the heating on when it gets cold.Dogmantra wrote:Cool idea r, just one criticism...

Funnily Enough to end off my Bio class, we are watching an Inconvenient Truth. Its kinda interesting, but then again I am not really environmentally aware and you know that those documentaries are always skewed so I don't really know what to think. All I know is this...those commercials where they ask you to donate because the polar bears are dying...I don't get it. What are they gonna do, put a freezer up in the arctic to help keep it cold so the polar bears dont die. Sending money to polar bears does very little in my mind.randomfrog wrote:*Cough*Al Gore *cough*.
Speaking of Polar Bears, I think I am going to change my avatar, as last year my nickname was Polar Bear, and I want a new avvie...fun!
