Starting a New Character.

Post by PhantomKyro »

Hi everybody!

I usually play Oblivion a lot. I have beaten Thief's Guild, Dark Brotherhood, Arena and Shivering Isles with my main Thief. I don't want to do KotN on my Thief, since I like all my Infamy, and I don't really plan on doing Main Quest either.

I got a little bored, And I'm thinking of making a Warrior-like class, so I can create a "good" character. I plan on doing the Fighter's Guild, SI, Arena, and KotN, and maybe the Main Quest sometime I'm after 18 or 19.

Does anybody have any tips on if I should create my own class, choose a default, the order I should do everything, etc? Anything would be appreciated.
Stay Frosty.

ABSOLUTELY create a class, most the premade ones have more than one melée combat skill. That gimps your character, because say for example you would be better off facing level 10 monsters at level 10 with 75 blade and 10 blunt than you would with, say 50 blade and 50 blunt, or 25 blade, 25 blunt, and 25 hand to hand, as you would if you leveled all three evenly.
And when things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.

As others have said, create your own class. Premade warrior classes often have 2-3 melee skills, which not only isn't very useful as one strong melee skill is better than three weak ones, but it also hinders your ability to boost your strength stat via training a non primary melee skill.

You're most likely going to want heavy armor, and thus the second problem. Armorer and block are both useful skills for a warrior, but are governed by endurance. Drop one of those skills so you can train it on the side to improve your endurance stat boosts (it's what I do anyhow, depends how focused you are on getting high endurance).

Other than that I recommend having restoration. Saved me many a time.

For the other skills, it's really up to you. You could choose stuff you think you'll use, or stuff you don't think you'll use (as filler to keep your level down, I use mercantile and speechcraft for this).

This is really a personal choice, but if you're planning on playing a Good aligned character then you may want to stay away from the Shivering Isles, as some of the stuff that Sheogorath has you do is a little ammoral and down right evil, sometimes.

Example:
Spoiler:
When you have to either kill or drive some adventurers insane. You have to murder one of the nobles of the SI. You also have to track down some chick and not only kill her but rip her eye out. That's some serial killer stuff right there.
Im not saying that any of this isn't fun, Im just saying that its not typically what good people do. :Twisted Evil:

As far as class, Id go with the Redguard for your race. They are by far the best warriors in the game and have the best weapon and armor options.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys.

Anyway, I'm going with Redguard, and I plan on just being a Heavy Warrior or something like that. What do you think of these traits?

Armorer/Block(Which one should I use?)
Athletics
Blade
Heavy Armor
Restoration(I usually always use this with everyone)

I'm still having trouble if I should have Armorer, Block, or both.

I'm also having trouble deciding the last two. I'm thinking of at least using Security, just in case I come past some chests and whatnot, and maybe either Acrobats or Mercantile. And If I do go with Armorer AND Block, then I don't know which one of those to pick.

As for being Good or Evil, I don't think I'll care. I'll probably do KotN, then the Fighter's Guild, and then do SI, to get some Madness Armor/Weapons. Then, finally maybe the Main Quest, just because it's fun.

Armorer and Block are two skills you will use extensively whether they are major or not. Combined with heavy armor, the only tricky part is whether you want all three endurance skills as majors. They will all go up, either way. Blade and Restoration are understandable. Athletics is a little more unusual, but with a Redguard character, I can see how you could play more of a dodgy style whether you run in and out to swing -- however this would fit better with Light Armor as well.

As for your final two, you need to decide what kind of flavor you want your character to have. The ones you've got are fine for straight melee, but a character without a *little* twist is pretty boring. I could make an argument for just about any of the remaining skills. (Speechcraft might be a stretch without role-playing.) Just pick what seems to fit.

I'd take armorer AND block so you can get to the point of repairing magic weapons that much faster and better damage reduction. leave off the athletics, b/c even if you fast travel, with all the dungeon crawls, unless you do them all in sneak/stealth mode, it will level and make you level up disproportionally fast and eventually may outclass your other combat skills. this was a common problem I always ran into taking athletics as a primary, anyway, by level TOO fast and my combat skills not keeping pace.

security isn't really needed either b/c with a little practice at the lock picking mini-game, most locks (even very hard) can be opened even with a low security skill. it's mostly just timing and learning the patterns. mercantile would be a good pick. I use it extensively and redguards get a small bonus (?). you'll get to a higher level faster letting you invest in stores, and get better deals and more gold for loot as a pay-off for all the hard work. speechcraft, meh, not so much. kinda like security, with a little practice at the mini-game, you can get better at it even with a low starting skill level.

While both Armorer and Block are very useful skills and you will use them a lot, there's nothing bad about putting them at major, but please understand by doing that, your Endurance is going to probably Max out very quickly, with all 3 Endurance skills as Major.

But then again, having a maxed Endurance skill, early on in the game is probably a good thing. Though it will gimp your character a bit later because you'll still be raising those 3 skills and Endurance won't go any higher. So just be aware of that.
