Ok, um.. I'm going to deconstruct the sentence "My President is black." for you:

My: Possessive pronoun, modifier of "president"
President: noun, the subject of the sentence
Is: State-of-being verb, also known as linking verb
black: predicate adjective refering to "president"

He was making a statement that informed the listener of a trait of the president.

Some people do not have qualms with using words meant to be adjectives as nouns, but the diction is derogatory, so I don't suggest you make a habit out of it. It's just a case where you'll want to avoid causing unecessary conflict, so it's better to avoid using it in that manner.

Also, whenever people are of a certain ethnicity and culture, it is the common, shared trait that allows them to call each other by "their word". Since both parties are targeted by the word, the assumption is that no harm is meant; however, a third party not included in that ethnicity or culture, not sharing that common trait, using the word is usually not as trustworthy with the meaning behind the usage. It is always easier to take things from people you don't trust out of context. For instance, I could call my friends from UCO "fag" all I wanted to because I share the name; they trust me with the meaning behind the word, but if I-- being one of the whitest people on Planet Earth-- were to call a black man "a word my mother wouldn't appreciate me saying, likely", the black man would automatically, and reasonably, assume the worst. As I said, it's something you'll want to avoid getting into the habit of doing because not everyone can read your mind to know you mean nothing by it. It's rather a case of formality that we still uphold, and at this point, it's rather rude for someone to break the rule.

If you plan on responding, I suggest you quote this post and reply in the "Tell us about yourself and your interests" thread, as I, of course, designed it to occasionally house conversations such as this.

Im straight, but have no problems admitting someone of the same gender is attractive. Nor do I judge for homosexuality. In my eyes its the same as liking your girlfriend to have blonde hair, or curves. Except its a chromosome pair. I won't lie though I kinda O.O with Vilanus Donton's journal...

wow this topic has really taken off ^_^ I personally am not offended when people call me gay (even though i sometimes correct them) unless they use it in an offensive way like what I overheard last week about one of my friends; "ugh look! another [removed] gay couple!" In situations like that I can become very hostile. Never anything physical just a huge-[removed] telling off.

Well, first of all, who's Glenda?

And secondly, no, haha. I actually call a lot of people sweetheart; mostly, it's anyone whom I like enough to call by that name, but I also use it as a general term. It's something I picked up from a very stoic friend of mine.

Wow, so because Christians are mainly anti-gay means they are willing to shoot people because of their opinions? I can't imagine any Christian I know taking violent action against a gay just because they're gay. I know that your post was (probably) sarcastic, but still.

Actually most of the religious people I know are completely okay with it, even if they don't personally approve of it, especially at my church.

Actually, it was extremely hyperbolic. I was mainly just expressing a generalisation that Oklahoma City has an overwhelmingly Southern Baptist population, and therefore has the majority of residents against same-sex relations. I, like Icy, have found most people to be tolerant, if not accepting; however, I've also noticed a wonton attempt on their part to (covertly) influence me into their path of thought, which is something I don't mind to an extent. Unfortunately, I've little patience for it anymore, as it seems to be the trademark of every Christian I know to do such without even attempting a glance through my eyes. I realize their lack of insight is, for the most part, not their own doing-- for one cannot see differently than one has been taught to see by one's parents and environment-- but I do wish that a common rule of "To each his own", as much as I hate that phrase-- it condones implication that one's beliefs are a product of arbitrary decision-- would be thoroughly followed.

straight

This topic is quite an interesting read.

i would rather not voice all my opinions here as i would not wish to insult anyone, intentionally or not. i, like everyone have my views, and am very set in them. i will not go out of my way to push my views on someone. everyone is there own person and who am i to tell someone my views if they dont need to hear it. My belief in life is that you cant worry what other people think of you. really its a waste of time.

so that being said, everyone have your own opinions and views and do your own thing and enjoy it.

I don't get the point of trying to convert a gay or lesbian to being straight. Its to my knowledge, that being gay or lesbian is a cause of genetics.

I have heard that sometimes it is genetics, but in my experience it seems to be mostly personal experiences and choice.

I very much doubt that it's by choice. You see everyone basically shunning someone because they're gay. So why would you want to be like that?

P.S. No offense to everyone who is gay or lesbian.

i dont necessarily think its the best idea to be debating whether or not orientation is genetics or not, its speculation at this point and i forsee a religious-esque type argument occurring, which when i frequented the boards before was not a good thing and got topics locked.

people dont debate why people are different races or why different religions without problems, so lets leave the whys out of this conversation.

it really is an interesting conversation hearing different peoples input

It is not speculation.
It is fact.

Being homosexual is not a choice.
Ask any Homosexual if they chose to be gay and the answer you get will always be "No."

regardless of what source says what about whether it is fact or not, there will probably be people on here who have heard it differently and will argue the point, which, again, i cant see going very well. I myself am under the impression that it has not yet been determined whether it is genetics or choice or what, and others may think the same, others may think another view.

Remember, people, us mods allowing you to discuss openly about these things means we trust you. Do not turn such topics into arguments, or this privilege will soon disappear. You may state your opinion, but you must respect the opinions of others. You may not insult anyone, we don't want to have to lock threads before they turn into flame wars.

If anyone should have a problem with things that are being said here, kindly pm me or one of the other mods to sort things out before a fight breaks out.

Ladies first, milord, and more-so Queens.

I'll start by stating a disclaimer-- mostly because I'm sick of hearing "No offense to and LGBT people":

This is a discussion thread. You can present your point of view, here, without intention to offend, and you do not have to apologize. If anyone is aoffended, they will let you know-- cordially and you will apologize. Matter settled.

Secondly, everyone is free to express their opinions here, as long is it's civil, so don't go feeling that you can't share your experience and personal knowledge.

Thirdly, through my experiences with myself and others, I know that homosexuality is not a choice, as do they. Anyone that has denied this has either been proven to have issues of control, or has been proven to not actually be homosexual and just wanted to be "different", which really rather peeves me as the amount of suffering invoked by the state of homosexuality enboldens it beyond mere arbitrary decision; thus, anyone who "becomes" gay through arbitrary decision is commiting a most grievous offense through the defiling and devaluing of symbolic pain.

There is one known cause of homosexuality, and it is accepted that it is not the only cause. This cause is traumatic experience. In short, someone who was molested by another of their same sex will be more prone to both engage in homosexual relations-- please do not use the word "acts" as homosexuality does comprise more than doing-- and engage in the type of trauma that caused their own suffering. This is because the mind created a comfort zone when being traumatized, as unlikely or contradictory as it sounds, and seeks to recreate the events.

I'll wait for rebuttal before continuing.
