A bit of help needed.
A bit of help needed.
Well here's my situation. I've had oblivion for a number of years and it ran fine (medium/high) on my old rig (AMD64 2000, Geforce 7800GT, 2Gb of ram,...), but I felt for some strange reason the need for an upgrade; which I did (Intel Quad Q8200, ATI 4850, 4GB of ram,...).
The problem is that ever since my "upgrade" Oblivion has run really slowly (constant lag). I've tried changing the settings, reinstalling, patching (official and unoffical) and updating all my drivers. Frankly, i'm at a dead end. I've got no idea what to do and have been searching the internet for about a month. If anyone has any smart advice, please be as kind to share. Thank you.

I´m not so much for computers, but are you using vista or XP? or maybe even windows 7?
Re: A bit of help needed.
I'm using XP, so there shouldn't be any problems.

Then I really don´t know, sorry. But I am going to check out bethesdas site for some information
Re: A bit of help needed.
The funny thing is that i have fallout 3 and I don't have the problem. It seems to be only with Oblivion.

Did you buy a new pc? I know you said upgrade but thats one hell of an upgrade. I have a nagging suspicion this has something to do with your video card. Are you 100% sure you installed the correct driver?
Then again if fallouts working that would suggest you did in fact install the driver correctly.

Well, I'm betting on the card myself... not cause I simply hate ATI cards, but cause that's the best assumption I can get... what resolution you playing @?? ATI cards don't support low/mid resolutions very well, and mid/high resolutions tend to get a bit of lag.. Besides, you actually downgraded your CPU when comes to what this game matters, hence the core speed is a little bit lower, FSB is a lot lower, L2/3 cache is also much lower and the multi-core advantage isn't recognized by the game's engine... overall I'd say it's one of those 2 factors, even tho having twice as RAM should compensate the 2nd one...leroybrown wrote:Did you buy a new pc? But the fact you play F3 as well as you did before the upgrade is what's intriguing me... I'm not sure if F3 is multi-CPU friendly, but it kinda nulifies my assumption about the card... and well... I've no idea...
Try disabling HDR and all those hard-core stuff ingame... Not sure it'll help, but it can always try...
If like it has been said you bought a new PC instead of upgrading an "old??" one (I don't consider a 2GB ram, 7800GT, AMD64 PC as old...), then by all means spare the HD space and play F3 in the new one and TES in the old one

Re: A bit of help needed.
I've been using an ATI Radeon HD 4850, and haven't had an issue with it. May I suggest trying Streamline? or Low Poly Grass? (Low-poly or Streamline have no noticeable visual effects in-game.)
Re: A bit of help needed.
That sounds exactly like an issue with the graphics driver. Try using a different version, even if it's older. "Newer" doesn't always mean "better", and there is absolutely nothing wrong with running an old version of a driver if that's what works best on your system.
By the way, what resolution are you running it at, and what resolution WERE you running it at? It always amazes me that people don't ask that question more often in tech threads.

Re: A bit of help needed.
On my desktop and in game i use 1280x1024. That I've used on both my rigs for everything. I have tried putting everything on minimum on the in-game settings. The quad core shouldn't pose a problem in theory, because each one of my cores is more powerful than my last processor; however having said that I do think it's the problem. I say that because whatever graphical settings I put it on, the performance doesn't change a bit. The graphics do, but not the performance.
I will try using streamline and the low poly grass, and see if that makes any difference. Even though the performance is slow from right the beginning in the prison cell (spoiler alert
). Rolling-back the drivers might be a good thing to try. May I ask what drivers you're using Edgy Redguard?
Well I'll try with the mods and I'll post the results. Thanks for the help by the way.

Re: A bit of help needed.
I've recently upgraded (I hope) to the ATI Catalyst 9.8 for Vista 64-bit
Re: A bit of help needed.
Well I've tried streamline and the low poly grass and I still get a constant 8fps (I measured it for the heck of it with fraps). I'm using the 9.8 drivers the edgy redguard is using. So I think I'm just going to throw in the towel until I get a new rig to try it on, or until I get windows 7 or something. I mean I've already beaten the game, but like most of you that's not quite enough is it now
. Thanks for you guys help, have a good weekend.
