If you're interested in PC Morrowind patches to reduce crash frequency, enhancement packs to beautify the game's graphics and mods to give the game world a more realistic feeling, here's a fantastic site I found. It's a step-by-step tutorial on how to install Morrowind COMPLETE with all the essential patches, including optional utilities and numerous suggestions for popular enhancements/mods (all with links):-

Morrowind Expanded
Morrowind For 2009 (installation/enhancement tutorial)

In addition, here are a few of my favourite Morrowind-related download links and sites:-

Unofficial Patches
Great House Fliggerty - Morrowind Code Patch (Latest, most up-to-date version)
Ethereal Software - Unofficial Morrowind Patch (Home site)

Essential Utilities
wrye.ufrealms.net - Wrye Mash (Best companion utility out there! Manage your mods, repair savegames, etc)
Planet Elder Scrolls - TESTool v1.3 (Cleans mods of unnecessary data. Warning: DON'T use the "Just Fix It" button!)
Planet Elder Scrolls - FPS Optimiser v1.96 (Adjusts draw distance on-the-fly to keep framerates smooth)

Mod Sites
Planet Elder Scrolls (Searchable mods database)
ElricM.com Web Portal (Searchable mods database)
Mythic Mods - Telesphoros' List o'Mods (Long list of popular mods)
Unforgotten Realms - Gorg's Morrowind Mods (Heads, hair, clothing, etc)

News: The Great House Fliggerty site has the VERY latest Morrowind Code Patch v1.5 which was posted only TWO days ago. Wrye Mash has also been updated to v84 since I last looked. Get 'em while they're hot, people!

Hope this helps.

I confess, I'd love to see morrowind updated to fully utilize the oblivion engine - it's a bit embarrassing, but I'd actually pay bethesda another $15 bucks for a morrowind in Oblivion pack that actually made use of all the new capabilities, the AI etcetera. I like the plot better, and I prefer the lack of scaling in Morrowind vs Oblivion, but the Oblivion engine *is* more stable, and I like the AI system and the fact that life goes on without you.

Jonnan

Jonnan. You wouldnt be the only one who'd be willing to pay extra for a Morrowind/Oblivion overhaul. Honestly I think Morrowind deserves it, the Xbox was capable of handling a much better game that what was presented by Morrowind. Even if the PC version would have lacked the nessecary support.

Still...

What I dont like about Morrowind.

well, once i was playing, and while it was saving, it crashed. i tried to reload it but that was my only save file, and it said 'bad save file'. i was level 61 and had every artifact except for eltonbrand, which i was obtaining at the time.

I can't stand the combat. Compared to Oblivion, Morrowind's fighting is really dull. At low levels, it's almost hard to hit anything at all.

I completely agree about the corrupt savegame problem. Morrowind's nastiest "feature" without a doubt! Having to restart from scratch because of a corrupt savegame perfectly illustrates the danger of using ONE savegame only. It's a SINGLE point of failure, folks! There are four possible ways to recover from a corrupt savegame situation:-

1. On PC, possibly Xbox too: When Morrowind detects corrupt data in memory, it sometimes has enough control to create a "Restore" savegame before crashing. Reloading from this (if successful) puts you back at the point immediately before the action you took that "triggered" the crash. Retrying the same action will usually not re-trigger the crash because data in memory is no longer corrupted after the game has been reloaded. Note: I'm not sure whether Xbox creates a Restore savegame, if it does, then by all means reload from it. If not, step 2 below is your best bet.

2. On PC or Xbox: Reload from a previous savegame, losing SOME progress.

3. On PC only: Last ditch resort to avoid step 4 below. In Wrye Mash, right-click the corrupt savegame file and select Repair All from the context menu. If the corruption is minor, this MAY repair the savegame sufficiently for it to load successfully again. Only snag is that the repair MAY delete savegame database records, causing game objects to disappear. If a vital object (quest item or essential NPC) is missing, you can use the console command PlaceAtPC to respawn it. :)

4. On PC or Xbox: Restart a new game from scratch, losing ALL progress!

Here's a method of savegame management that will ensure you NEVER get beyond step 2 above:-

Cycle Saving: Repeatedly cycle through at least two savegames, i.e. Save1, Save2, then Save1 again, etc. Three or more savegames is even better. Personally, I use three because corruption is very rare but I like to hedge my bets anyway.

Recovery: If the latest savegame in the cycle is corrupt, simply reload from the previous one in the cycle.

Continuation: Next time you save, don't overwrite the next savegame in the cycle. Instead, DELETE and recreate it anew. If the corruption was due to a bad sector on the hard drive, this ensures that next time any attempt is made to RE-use that sector, it will be marked as bad and NOT used again.

On PC, possibly Xbox too: Quicksave frequently between cycle saves. On exiting Morrowind, quicksave AND immediately do the next cycle save. This gives you TWO identical savegames. If the quicksave is corrupt, reload from the latest cycle savegame and you've lost ZERO progress! Note: I'm not sure whether Xbox supports quicksaves. If not, the solution is...

On Xbox: If quicksave ISN'T supported, you can still get TWO identical savegames by simply cycle saving TWICE before exiting Morrowind. Then, if the latest cycle savegame is corrupt, reload from the previous one and you've lost ZERO progress. You may want to extend the cycle length to compensate. E.g. If cycling through two savegames, create a third. For three, create a fourth.

Hope this helps.

h8ball wrote:Personally, I would have balanced things out by making a couple of simple changes to the way Attributes govern Skills:-

Code: Select all

Strength: LongBlade Axe BluntWeapon Acrobatics
Endurance: Spear MediumArmor HeavyArmor Armorer
Agility: LightArmor Block Sneak Marksman
Speed: ShortBlade HandToHand Unarmored Athletics
Intelligence: Alchemy Conjuration Enchant Security
Willpower: Alteration Destruction Mysticism Resoration
Personality: Barter Persuasion Bribery Illusion
1. Armorer now governed by Endurance rather than Strength
2. Two skills Mercantile/Speechcraft expanded to three skills Barter/Persuasion/Bribery (makes more sense)

This way, the number of skills is increased from 27 to 28 and each of the 7 Attributes governs exactly 4 of them, so there's a perfect balance.

I would also have made Athletics increase MUCH more slowly so it could be used as a Major/Minor skill without causing over-levelling.
Whoa whoa whoa--Bribery? Barter? Persuasion? Those things are under Speechcraft, I beg your pardon.

It was a "purely hypothetical" response to propose a potential solution to the problem of attributes governing UNequal numbers of skills. The majority of attributes govern 4 skills each, but Strength governs 5 (too many) and Endurance/Personality only 3 each (too few). It seems more logical to have ALL attributes (except Luck) governing exactly 4 skills each.

Barter = Mercantile: Simple rename so new players easily make the connection between Barter (buying/selling) and Barter (skill).

Persuasion = Speechcraft (Persuasion:Admire/Intimidate/Taunt).

Bribery = Speechcraft (Persuasion:Bribe). Separated to new skill which increases slower than Persuasion and has much less chance of success, greatly reducing the obvious exploit potential of using Bribe to WAY too easily increase NPC Dispositions to 100 for better prices and easier bartering.

Even at Level 1 with Speechcraft as a Major/Minor, I find Bribe 10 is about 20% and Bribe 100 about 50% successful. You can often boost NPC Disposition from 45 to 100 for less than 1000 Gold, so why EVER bother with Bribe 1000 (wasteful) or Admire/Intimidate (pointless) in the first place?

I recently got Morrowind: Game of the Year edition for PC and I've got to say, it is amazing. But as someone who's played Oblivion beforehand, I wish there was full voice-acting and an objective pointer to show you where to go. Fast Travel wouldn't hurt as well. Still, these are minor gripes and aren't going to stop me spending 500 hours of my life on Morrowind :)

^ I don't think Morrowind needs the Green Arrow Of Stupidity like Oblivion has ("I had to follow the clues laid down by an ancient trail in order to find the Mythic Dawn base. Luckily all I had to do was glance at a rudimentary map of Cyrodiil and I knew exactly where the base was"), just directions that are a bit more specific than "Somewhere north of Vivec, but if you get to Dagon Fel you've gone too far, you'll want to back up".

I like how the Imperial Oracle quests handle it - you get the quest then have to seek a location out yourself by asking a scout.

If only they were that specific. Usually you don't get more than "North of here" and even then it's not that accurate.

And I gave up on the first Morag Tong quest when they told me to kill someone in the wilderness...

The most obvious problem is the instability. I made a thief character (female bosmer) and within 5 hours all 4 of my saved games were corrupted. Somehow it would load at a Legion Fort (Moonmoth or maybe Frostmoth) all white where i could not see anything. All of the loads were like this. I just deleted all of them and started over.

I also complain about the quest directions. Especially stuff like go north until you see a tree, then head west...there's trees everywhere!

I mostly liked Morrowind though, maybe even being better than Oblivion.

My main problem is how retarded the third person looks. Your guy looks like the ground underneath him is moving, and when he jumps it looks like one of those really old movies, where it's all slow and funny looking, and he doesn't change his feet around or anything when he jumps. They also ought to have a crosshair in third person, because i really like third person gameplay in rpg's.

I've noticed numerous times that there is a problem with people in Morrowind being worryingly underweight, particularly women. My Breton sorceress looks like she's in need of a good square meal or two.

The map system, and the journel
I agree with Sonix. The journal really makes me angry. I have to reach my fingers all the way over to the freaking 'J' key (I realize I can change that, but I really never get around to it) to access it, then scroll through my multiple active quests for five minutes to start an old one.

I do like how you can click the blue text to learn more about the subject, however.

I also like Oblivion more in the aspect of spellcasting itself, because having to hold my hands out like I'm "just so pumped to cast the spell" to cast it at all.
