It's pretty difficult to define but it basically involves abandoning standard song structure in favour of slow build-ups and contrasting dynamics, and using guitars for textures and effects instead of riffs and chords. The best thing to do is to just listen to some - try this, this and this.

im gonna sound like a complete geek...im addicted to game/movie soundtracks, final fantasy, silent hill, LOTR etc dunno why but i prefer these to actual music. i do have a couple of normal cds like goldfrapp and CSS though. i have a very weird taste

I'm one of those people who like artists and not genres. But in general I listen to rock n roll, punk, metal, and even early blues like Muddy Waters and Leadbelly. I have very wide range of tastes from early punk bands like The Ramones and the Sex Pistols to Alt rock bands like The Pixies and REM to Metal Bands like Dio and Ozzy to Classic Rock bands like the Beatles and hell I even listen to Prince. But recently I have been listening to proto-punk and bands like Iggy and The Stooges, The MC5, and The New York Dolls. But in general I do not listen to most modern music because it lacks the youth rebellion of much that has come before it. It seems like everyone is comfortable with mediocrity.

Mediocre modern music, you say? Why, I beg to differ. In fact, if you will stoop from your lofty perch to listen to but one post-rock song, I believe you will find we have very sophisticated tastes now-a-days. At least, some of us do.

Hey ladies and gents!

Just trying out my Avatar and Signature.

Voted for METAL (power-metal actually), though I like all kinds off music, really. Lyrics and sound both have to be good. Not just some fast-paced Death Metal or whatever, that has no plausible lyrics and it's only good for venting and screaming your lungs outs (e.g.:I like Axenstar, Hammerfall). Also, Hypnogaja. Not metal, but good.

i mostly listen to oldschool or undergrond hip hop since its crappy on the radio with soulja boy and the like. Sometimes i even listen to rock and pop. BTW why are hip hop and rap listed seperately in the poll

Hip Hop and Rap are different from my understanding. Rap is the style of the singing (which is often crap in my opinion) and Hip Hop is a combination of Rap and others.

Country (Johnny Cash)
Alternative (Red Hot Chili Peppers, System Of A Down

And Other meaning film scores and soundtracks, John William's music for the Star Wars series and I really like Hans Zimmer's stuff with The Dark Knight, Pirates of The Caribbean. Also a little bit of Irish Traditional music, Christy Moore, Wolf Tones? Though I doubt hardly anyone here would know about that
