New to Morrowind

Post by Lorkmir »

I have just bought MorrowingGOTY for Xbox and have no idea what I should do first. I am a highly skilled Oblivion player but it seems that this game is much more difficult to just pick up and play.

Any help?

PS:I don't understand how to save and it freezes when I sleep

I you play on a regular xbox, uh, just press start and select save. If 360, not really sure if there's a difference.

I think that the first time you play Morrowind you should just be a noob and go with the flow and dont concern yourself to much about what you're doing . Thats when games are the most fun, when you dont know everything about it.

That said, it's a good idea to have a character thats not to hard to play. A warrior-class is a good way to start, whereas a pure mage/thief are harder (although not by any means undoable). I started my first game as a breton monk and got so frustrated at the game that I left it for a week or two(also due to the fat that I messed up at the first main quest).

The main quest is pretty uninspriring at first glance, but great later. A good idea is to join a guild that you like and do its quests. That and exploring the map and lore is what involves you in the game. After going through a guild or the main quest and reaching a higher level, you can tackle the expansions.

Dont know about the freeze when sleep, try to clean the disk or something. Really, if you cant sleep, the game is unplayable since you level by sleeping.

1st time i played i raced through and completed the main quest. didn't take long.
2nd time through i joined as many guilds as possible, did tons of quests. as a result took about 3 months longer.

i'm still glad i did a run through 1st time since it gave me enough knowledge of the game to play it properly the 2nd time. if i play it a 3rd time i'll notch difficulty up to max to force me to invest more in enchanting.
It's a fine line, but someone has to walk it.

You can't save until you've reported to Caius Cosades. If you want to know how to get there click on the spoiler thingey.
Spoiler:
Take the siltstrider ( Big bug thingey used for transport) to Balmora, cross the river, his house is on the left end of the street farthest from the river.

I'm presuming it's an X-box thing.

Every so often I think about how cool it would be to have an X-Box/Playstation/Wii - then I see the way a game I really like plays on one, and I get over it - <G>.

They are pretty, graphically, but every game I like is a pain on one - <G>.

I've played Morrowind on the 360.. I enjoyed it quite a bit.
Anyway, as someone suggested playing as a warrior is easier and will let you get into the game more. My first fully-invested game I played as the Dunmer on one of those splash posters I see all the time:
LINK

Other suggestions:
  • be prepared to miss a lot when you swing. It's frustrating at first but once you get over that it's more fun. That was my biggest obstacle, to be honest, was getting used to swinging a sword into an enemies face and it not counting as a hit. Once you get your skill high enough that ceases to be a problem anyway.
  • Speechcraft as a major, regardless of your playing style. At least one your first playthrough. While having a high skill in that is rewarding later on, if your skill is at 5 it's impossibly hard to get anywhere when dealing with people outside of violence. My first game I didn't do that and I ended up using a glitch to get my skill up to 100 for about 70 gold.
  • Try not to focus on any one guild or storyline. When I worked on the main quest I'd do one or two quests, then go do some stuff for the Fighters Guild, then one or two MQ quests, then go see what my Legion commander wanted me to do, then a couple more MQ quests, repeat. It let the main quest linger a lot longer and I never got bored with any one series of quests. The one exception was the Legion which I got so caught up with I ended up playing through most of it without pausing to do anything else.

Cactus, may I say you're a genius?

Since my brother invited a horde of friends over, using the desktop computer would seem a little odd for me. So I'm confiding myself in my room to get away. So I decided to take this, and play ol' Morrowind on my 360. And I am enjoying it, taking this. It also goes to show how easily you can get side-tracked, I started with being a warrior in mind now I ended being a thief. :x

It's an xbox thing, like jonnan said. I only got my xbox goty disc a week ago so I'm still getting used to the xbox controls, fortunately I already knew about this before getting the game.

I don't know about Xbox versions but, on PC, you can save as soon as you finish creating your character in Seyda Neen. In my new game, I've achieved Level 3 and haven't even visited Caius Cosades yet, having saved the game dozens of times.

@Cactus

Splurrrrge... Whipwhipwhop! Squirts Cactus copiously with Scrib Jelly & shaves his chin bristles with the keen edge of my recently acquired Gillette Silver Longsword! LOL!

Looking at his photo upside down explains his forum username. He LOOKS like a Cactus! <sniggers>

And I wonder if the cap is to hide premature baldness? After all, why do elderly bald gentlemen always seem to have long beards? Because gravity gradually pulls the hair down out of their heads and it eventually falls out of their chin!

Mind you, last time I tried to grow a beard, it came out Ginger/Grey despite my Brown hair! Well, salt 'n' peppery Brown hair, anyway (I am 47, you know).

Sorry about the ribbing, Cactus. Hope you're taking it with a sense of humour... WE are! :P

Anyway, back on topic...

@Lorkmir

There's no need to take on quests right away. I've just started a new game and I'm having fun just luring Slaughterfish to the edge of the sea (where they can't bite me), spearing them (long reach), diving for Pearls (worth 100 Gold each) and selling them to buy gear for later.

Using a Spear increases my Endurance, which I want maxed out ASAP for maximum Health gain per level-up. In fact, this time around, I might not even take on any Main/Guild/Faction quests until I reach Level 10 or above. I've joined the Fighters/Mages/Thieves Guilds and the Temple, but ONLY to get lower prices for being a member.

If you WANT to join the Guilds, etc, I'd recommend starting with the Temple and Fighters/Mages Guilds in Balmora, as most of their initial quests are easy.

Beware the early "nasty trap", though! As a first-time player, your first stop will be Balmora (directions to Caius Cosades) and you'll no doubt be tempted to FIRST join the Fighters Guild to gain some combat experience. If you haven't yet joined the Thieves Guild, completing the 4th Fighters Guild quest, called "The Code Book", means you can NEVER join the Thieves Guild! No spoilers, but the Fighters Guild and Thieves Guild don't like each other and that quest is one of several "turning points" where you have to decide which of them to side with. Unfortunately, there's NO clear warning that you're doing something wrong. First time I played, I ended up restarting the game from scratch, losing about two week's gameplay!

[offtopic]Grooming? O rly? I happen to like my disheveled beard. Okay.. maybe I should trim it so it's of equal length all the way around, but where the fun in that?

For the record, I have considerably long hair. There aren't any bald men in my family, so I think I'm pretty safe, actually. If you look at my avatar you'll see the back of my hair sticking out of the bottom of my hat; that's what those tufts of hair are sticking on out the sides (especially on the left side of the photo).[/offtopic]

OK, I got it the wrong way round... Do you sleep hanging upside down so gravity pulling your hair keeps your beard short?

Just to give everyone the chance to mercilessly rib ME in return... Reason I don't use my own photo as an avatar is I have four eyes and jug ears. Whenever I have trouble sleeping, I tuck 'em behind my specs at night. Saves me buying a blindfold!

On topic again...

Another good pastime early on is Ancestral Tomb raiding, as there's some good loot to be had. You'll need a Silver or Enchanted weapon to kill Ghosts, though. Best thing is to let enemies chase you to the door so you can keep retreating outside to heal up. Only snag is that certain tombs are Vampire lairs. If you see people with glow-in-the-dark eyes, RUN!
