I enjoyed every quest line, for different reasons:

Fighter's Guild:
Spoiler:
I thought the story was interesting and the whole infiltration quest was fun as well. I had a lot of fun fighting my way out of that one. I also liked out between story quests you just had random quests for clients. It made the story last longer and made the whole questline feel a bit more.. complete. It's something I felt the Mages Guild questline lacked. One thing that bugged me was that you didn't seem to get city-related quests from the cities in question. Why was Anvil involved with a stolen item from Bruma? Why not contract out of the Bruma guild..?
Mages Guild:
Spoiler:
The questline was mildly interesting, but 50% of it seemed to be the Recommendation Quests. Those are interesting and varying, but there should have been more variety. Come to think of it.. very little about the Mages Guild did I enjoy. It was over too quickly, no variety (non-questline-related quests, see FG), and the ending seemed.. contrived. Especially with the way you become ArchMage.
Dark Brotherhood:
Spoiler:
The quests started off really strong, but it seems like each progressive quest gets less and less interesting. For me one of the most interesting and most challenging is the quest to kill Valen Dreth, and it's the third quest in! After Purification the dead-drop quests are just.. boring. No contact with anyone, just random killing and then suddenly the final quest which is just.. brief and anti-climatic.
Thieves Guild:
Spoiler:
For me the Thieves Guild questline is one of the more epic of the game. You're performing random and varying thefts (I especially loved stealing from the Countess. I LOVE secret passageways) and all the while learning tiny little clues here and there about the Gray Fox. Eventually you're able to meet him and start picking up bigger clues until it's all finally revealed after the final quest. The final quest is, to me, one of the most epic of the game.. breaking into the Palace itself. It's long, difficult, and I loved it. Unlike the DB the quests start rather simple and gradually get more complicated and more interesting. The final few Gray Fox quests are some of my absolute favourite quests of the game.

Spoiler:
My top 4 of all the guilds would look like this:

Quests/overall
1) Thieves Guild
2) Fighters Guild
3) Mages Guild
4) Dark Brotherhood

Items/abilities/rewards
1) Dark Brotherhood
2) Thieves Guild
3) Mages Guild
4) Fighters Guild

It's weird because lots of people agreed that the Dark Brotherhood questline is the best questline in the game. They even advertised with the fact that the creator of the DB quests has designed the quests in Fallout 3.

And I think the Thieves Guild, Fighters Guild and Mages Guild all have a better questline :D.

The first two Dark Brotherhood quests were quite simple and boring. Ok, faking that accident in "Accidents happen" is fun the first time you do it, but the quest itself is much too easy and too short. Scheduled for Execution is absolutely fantastic and I nearly put the DB above the Mages Guild because of this quest.
It's a long, hard quest, just how I like them ;). And killing Valen Dreth is just awesome.
The Assassinated Man is more like a Fighters Guild quest, killing those ghosts. This quest can be finished in a few minutes and there is nothing challenging about it.
The four Ocheeva quests aren't much better. I was really disappointed by the Whodunit quest (see my previous posts). It's still fun though but I expected more of it.
Killing Adamus Phillida is fun but not that special either.
After eight quests, there's the Purification. Lucien's base of operations looks awesome. You've got to kill all your family members which is pretty straightforward.
The Dead Drop Quests are really, really boring. While you received great rewards in all previous quests, you now get only a few golden coins. It's kill - reward - kill - reward.
The final sequence surprised me but is over very quickly, like Cactus said. I expected a more epic battle in the end.

So IMO, the rewards from the DB are great, but the quests (with the exception of Scheduled for Execution) are quite boring, especially the second or third time you do them (while the Fighters Guild, Thieves Guild and Mages Guild quests are fun even the 2nd or 3rd time you complete them).

The main problem of the DB quests is that they're quite difficult in the beginning and get easier and easier towards the end. While the Thieves Guild gradually gets more complicated and difficult.

And I completely agree with Cactus concerning the other guilds ;)

At first, it was the DB, but I didn't really like the ending. Plus, My class is Thief, and I love sneaking around. Man, Ultimate Heist was soooo much fun.

Fighter's Guild was pretty fun too, but the Mages Guild was just boring.

Why do people dislike the Mages Guild so much?
Ambush, great quest. It really surprised me.
A Plot Revealed, I liked Jeanne Frasoric so I had my revenge on these zombies.
The Necromancers Amulet, definitely the most awesome amulet in the game and I've always wanted to kill Caranya.
Anvil Recommendation, one of the better recommendation quests.
Liberation or Apprehension, good change of story, Mucianus who has changed into a zombie.
Vahtacen's Secret, perhaps the best MG quest (IMO). Nice puzzle.
Mage's Staff, you get your own staff!

And what about the Spellcreation Altar, the Enchanting Altar, the Arcane University....

I think they don't dislike the MG. It's the most useful guild in the whole game, hands down.

The plot could have been better though. But I don't complain, it was good enough.

The mages guild seemed full of inept people who didn't deserve their staves or robes. Always sending you off to muck around in someone elses mistake or to deal with something without telling you what you're getting into :x

though for some reason now the arcane university seems bonkers cause periodically the scholars and apprentices will ambush the guards, which makes up for the being treeated like and idiot bit. Though getting into the university was among my favorite guild initiations that's for sure, trudging through ruined forts, solving murder cases rescuing reckless magisters from crazed undead. Way more involved than running up and saying "ready for work!"

but the dialogue with the dark brotherhood alone won me over.

I think the four guilds can be divided in two categories.
Category 1: Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild
Category 2: Mages Guild, Fighters Guild

The MG and FG both have a rival guild to deal with (Necromancers and Blackwood Company) and some important guild members die.
Spoiler:
Viranus Donton (Fighters Guild), Traven (Mages Guild) and Irlav Jarol (Mages Guild)
Both guilds have a traitor amongst them.
Spoiler:
Caranya (Mages Guild) and Maglir (Fighters Guild)
And the storylines are somehow the same.
Spoiler:
Both questlines end with an attack on the rival guild.
The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild are the evil guilds. You'll get infamy by doing these quests.
Both guilds are being "watched" by an Imperial guard: Hieronymus Lex (Thieves Guild) and Adamus Phillida (Dark Brotherhood).
Spoiler:
Both guards are being dealt with. Hieronymus gets reassigned and Adamus gets killed (by you).
The quests are a bit similar. At the end of the Thieves Guild, you'll get your quests from the Grayfox himself. At the end of the Dark Brotherhood, Lachance will give you your orders.

So IMO it's a bit unfair to compare the Thieves Guild and the Mages Guild, for example.

Wouldn't saying necromancers are a guild be like saying the guards are a rival guild?

All the guilds have traitors among them, have a rival group that they have to work around or deal with. The main differences being what they aim to do and initiations. At least that's how I've seen it.

It's hard to choose between the Dark Brotherhood and the Thieves Guild. The DB has better rewards, but I voted for the thieves because I think the quests are more fun, especially The Ultimate Heist.

I always liked morrowinds guilds more than oblivions. I just wish one of the games had a really good guild for the legion. In oblivion the theives guild was my favorite. I love lore and the thieves guild had a bunch of it, espicially when you get to see all the "elder scrolls". I still wish they cleared that up though. What are the purposes.

1.Thieves Guild
2. knights of nine (Just epic, liked it better than the main story line)
3. db (funny quests and a good excuse to kill people)
4. Arena (just fun killing people in battles for gold)

Least favorite: Mages guild. Most of my amazing chars are mage/magic based, but the story really lacked and the final boss was a letdown. It lasted only a few seconds. 3 blasts from my custom "doomsday" spell and he was gone. :D

Thanks 5tealthh, and I agree that the quests in oblivion were better executed, but for some reason I remember morrowinds better. Go figure :D
