Global Warming

Post by Coulsonji »

Now this is a fairly big issue, but I don't know what to think about it, mainly because I don't know too much about it, but I do think the world needs to take immediate action. This isn't happening and it really worries me, because my generation will have to deal with it in the future.

What's your view on global warming? Do you think it's a real threat? How worried are you?

P.S I found this video on youtube, and I think it is a very effective ad:

WARNING: May contain sadness.

I sense a debate.

I think Global warming is definately happening. The facts and the correlations are there. There may be no 100% proof that global warming is definately happening because of our CO2 emissions.

For those who dont know what global warming is I shall explain, and hopefully prove to anybody who doesnt think its happening, that it is.

Well we'll start with the greenhouse effect. When Carbon based gases are released into the atmosphere it creates an almost cloud or gang of them in the sky. So when the suns rays come down onto earth, they cant leave effectively, thus heating up the planet. Which can then lead to melting polar ice caps, intesified storms etc.

However weather might not just change but health issues such as radiation. ARounds about australia there is a hole in the ozone layer. THe ozone layer helps to protect us against the suns Ultra Violet rays. Ultra Violet Rays are ionizing which means they damage cells directly, which can lead to cancer, most possible, skin cancer. With a hole in the ozone layer we are no longer protected by the harmful rays from the sun.

I'm sure you have all seen the graphs which show a correlation between CO2 emissions since teh 1800s to present and showing the weather changes.

reminds me of easter island. it proved that a human culture in a confined space, no matter what resources they have, can cause their own extinction through their own stupidity

I just got one thing to say about Global Warming.

Anybody ever seen The Day After Tomorrow?

There will come a time when our planet will get tired of being the human race's [&@%!] and fight back to recycle itself.
If you have, enough said.

I love that film, apart from the ridiculously stereotyped English accents.

"Cor blimey guv'nor, the fuel's freezing in the bloody lines! Gertcha! Jellied eels!" or something along those lines.

Apparently global warming might stop the Gulf Stream, so England will either end up really hot or go the other way and turn completely Scandinavian. Bring it on, that's much better than it being 57 degrees and drizzling all the time...

Another theory I've heard is a thing called 'global dimming' where airborne particles of smoke and stuff like that (ie things you can see as opposed to microscopic particles) reflect sunlight back out into space which has a net cooling effect on the planet. Currently this isn't quite as effective as global warming but with the prevalence of emerging nations like China and most of Eastern Europe burning the equivalent mass of Australia in coal every day we could actually see the world cooling down instead of heating up.

Oh, and don't listen to anything about climate change. We have that in England already. It's called 'the weather'.

I personally don't think Global warming to be much of a problem since the human race will just move to underground civilizations, like in The Matrix.

Yeah, cause we all wanna live like that.

Did you see the real world in that movie?
It looked like the fifth level of Hell!

It would NOT be my personal choice to live in a puke hole like that.

For this reason, I was sympathetic to the character Cipher in the movie.
I would feel the same way.

I for one believe that the climate is changing, but don't think it is mainly due to our CO2 output like so many people believe.

The world has always had changing climates, we went from the Ice Age to present day, to a small ice age and back. This is just the way it has been for all time.

Thank you.

The climate is changing, there's no doubt about that.
Yes, it's probably effected by CO2.
However, our temperature records rely on the ice caps. These do not go back to the suspected creation of the earth. Ergo, there must have been a time where there were no ice caps. Following on from that, there must have been a time when the earth was hotter than it is now. Therefore, the climate changed before we started pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.

To conclude: Pirates Prevent Global Warming

The Easter Island peoples did not eradicate themselves by building Moi.

They had an extensive amount of forest that would last them a long time, it was rats brought by foreign peoples that ultimately put them on the fast track to doom. The rats had no natural predators, and they ate the seeds of the trees that feel to the ground.

So the forests disappeared, and the Easter Island people turned on eachother.

I may sound irresponsible but as Ian Malcolm would say (i know he is not real but jeff goldbloom is or however you spell his name) the earth has outlived much more than human trauma. Global warming is just an attempt by humans to give ourselves more credit than we deserve. There are mechanisms on this earth so complicated that if all human existance was used to try to duplicate them or even understand them, they could not get close in a million years. Just look at the weather, we have billions of dollars in the weather broadcasting industry but we cant confirm tornados until they have touched down. This earth is a far more powerful and mystical being than we could ever imagine. If seemingly simple things like circulatory systems and rain clouds cant be understood, then how can we presume to know what is in our planets future. Global Warming may or may not happen but it sure as hell wont be what we are expecting!

You're kidding right? The Earth can't do anything about us. It can't destroy us. We can destroy it though.

Personally, I don't care if its real or not, because I'm one of those stubborn [&@%!] that aren't going to change their lifestyle, for anything.

Better yet, I have seen "Two days before the day after tomorrow" :D it's an awsome south park episode.

On the topic, it's sort of sad that while the swine flu is spreading further than containment, and the global warming happening, something else has to be added to the mix to cause our own human world pandemic XD

OH NOES! WE ARE ALL GONNA DIE! ...lol. Of course global warming is happening, but how the heck are we gonna fix it? It might be the CO2 output, but still, it's physically impossible for everyone in the world to agree on something like this. A lot of the people who don't believe it won't listen, and humans hardly seem to learn when to stop.

I laugh at peoples sad attempts at making Youtube videos in order to enlighten us. I laugh even harder at the ones who attempt to tell us the apocalypse is coming. "Oh no! The planet is heating up! Satan is approaching! We are all doomed!" BULL. It doesn't help at all. Instead of wasting a couple hours at your computer making something that scares people to death, maybe you should actually do something productive.

*whew* glad that's off my handsome manly chest of pure awesomeness.

Heres a theory which many would frown upon but hey, your opinion.

As history has taught us, humans either get wiped out or come close to it, this 'event' will intensify and get dangerously powerful to the point where a lot of damage is done, alot of people wont make it but afterwards if humans have survived, by any methods, then we would have to adjust to living in the new 'world' which we ironically destroyed.

As long as I have a plasma rifle and a suit of T-51b Power Armor I'll be fine.

... I said nothing about radiation exposure, the earth will 'burn' from the intense heat due to no outer layer protecting it. No air shall remain here, plants will catch fire and almost instantly die/turn to ash, animals won't be able to breathe and the heat itself would actually 'melt' their... carcasses.
The water will boil and evaporate. There will pretty much be nothing left on earth, loose rocks and boulders will no longer be held down due to gravity

You said "event" so I assumed it was any old earth shattering disaster. I sorta forgot the whole topic was about global warming, or in your case, global inferno. Well as long as I have my super duper heat resistant armor, I'll be fine.

I still wear it even when I get caught. Sin defense plays no role in the game at all.

But we're straying off topic.

i think it's way beyond too late. our greed has already killed us - we're just too stupid to realise. like one of those dinosaurs that had two brains (one being a bunch of nerve endings in it's tail). if the main beast died it could take several seconds for the message to reach the 2nd brain and it would still function normally. i see us as the 2nd brain attached to a dead beast.
