Casting Illusion spells with a wider Area - does it work?

Post by s0shlychlngd »

Let's say you have a group of 10 people standing in front of you. When you cast an illusion spell like frenzy, rally, demoralize, or calm on a single person (by target or touch), and the spell has a large area attached to it, is this working on all targets in the area? For example, can you demoralize an entire group of people if you simply did a demoralize spell by touch that had a 50-foot radius on a single person? If not, then is there any benefit to increasing the area, and they should all be left at 0 when spell-making to save magicka?

I didn't fell like the wiki addressed that, but sorry if it did and I missed it somewhere! Thanks

I'm not completely sure. I've had mixed results with area-effect touch spells. It might be my game glitchin' up on me, but they don't seem to always work for me (as in it kind of depends on the kind of spell, though with something like Frenzy I would assume it does indeed affect all within the radius of the spell's area of effect; things like opening locks, however, have never worked in area-effects for me).

But yeah, like I said in my parenthesis, frenzy/demoralize/etc should work on area-touch. And if the NPCs are grouped kinda close together you should be able to see whether it affected them or not via the glowy effect they have for a couple seconds when a spell affects them.
The shadow of the past never dies, so walk forward knowing you can become better than what you've left behind.

Indeed, the spell will affect all targets within its radius.

Ok, thanks everyone! After some of my own experiments it did work on all of the targets, using both touch and target in the spell. Sometimes it didn't catch everyone when there were alot of people.

I couldn't tell if anything happened on Calm, however. Even the target didn't change to the typical glowing green.

Thanks for the help!

Perhaps your Calm spell was of lower level than the target.

Well, I had them at magnitude 25, and had 100% efficiency. It seemed like nothing happened unless they were attacking me, and also odd things happened to it when dealing with different factions. For example, I was in the Imperial City and had a bunch of people attacking me. Doing Calm on citizens only worked on them, and doing calm on the guards only worked on them, even though the spell had maximum magnitude and area.

When Calm is cast upon a non-hostile creature or NPC, the target won't glow.
