Morrowind Max Difficulty Race Tier List

Post by ElderScrolls »

Introduction:

When I started looking for a race tier list for Morrowind, I noticed that almost every ranking focused on a handful of obvious traits—starting attributes, racial powers, or simply personal preference. Very few attempted to evaluate races using all of the mechanics that actually influence performance throughout a full playthrough, especially on maximum difficulty.

This tier list aims to be as objective as possible. Rather than ranking races based on aesthetics, lore, or role-playing appeal, it evaluates them strictly by gameplay effectiveness. It considers not only the well-known strengths of each race, but also several mechanics that are often overlooked. These include the impact of weight on movement speed (with heavier races moving faster), the importance of movement speed for avoiding projectiles and repositioning, how magic becomes disproportionately powerful on max difficulty, the practical effect of height on Levitation, the fact that Resist Magicka does not protect against paralysis or elemental spells, and the strengths and risks of melee combat, where stagger and close-range exposure become much more punishing.

The goal is not to determine which race is the most fun or thematic, but which provides the greatest gameplay advantage when all of these factors are considered together. Some races have a higher floor, offering consistent performance with little effort, while others have a much higher ceiling but require greater knowledge and optimization to reach their full potential. Finally, I am aware that with game-breaking exploits such as Alchemy, none of this truly matters. This guide is made assuming you do not such exploits to break the game. At the end of the day, the races in S tier are pretty much the best in their own rights (Breton as a defensive mage, Altmer as an offensive mage and Orc as a warrior).

Criteria used:

Magic is king because it is ranged, it can protect, distract, conceal, damage, stop, calm, unlock and it can abuse field of view.
Movement speed (affected by race weight) is highly valuable for positioning and avoiding projectiles.
Height is considered because it slightly improves levitation ascent.
Resist Magicka is valuable, but it does not protect against paralysis or elemental damage.
Melee remains strong but is inherently riskier due to stagger, knock downs, paralysis, and the need to fight at close range.

S Tier:

Altmer — Highest Ceiling

The race with the greatest potential.

Strengths:
Largest magicka pool in the game.
Can cast stronger spells earlier and more frequently than any other race.
Magic bypasses the weapon damage penalty on max difficulty.
The tallest race, giving a slight advantage when using Levitation.
Outstanding spellmaking, enchantment, and late-game scaling.
Fear of reflected spells can be bypassed entirely by an Absorb Health spell which can't be reflected in Vanilla Morrowind.

Weaknesses:
Severe weaknesses to Fire, Frost, and Shock.
Less forgiving than Breton, especially early on.
Even with maximum absorption, offensive spells can be reflected back at you.
Average speed (unlike in Oblivion and Skyrim where they are the fastest. It is highly probable that the weight speed advantage was unintended and it was supposed to be height that determined speed but I guess we will never know).

Verdict: Altmer have the highest ceiling. Their weaknesses demand careful play, but no race surpasses their offensive potential or long-term magical power.

Breton — Highest Floor

The most reliable race in the game.

Strengths:
50% Resist Magicka permanently reduces many dangerous hostile spells.
Bonus magicka enables powerful spellcasting from the beginning.
Magic remains the strongest combat style on max difficulty.
Dragonskin is an excellent daily power.
Excellent for pure mages, hybrids, and enchantment-focused builds.
Requires very little setup to be consistently powerful.

Weaknesses:
Very light weight results in slower movement.
Resist Magicka does not protect against paralysis, fire, frost, shock, poison, or disease.
Resist Magicka is meaningful but dodging spells is extremely easy and so this is not relevant as in Oblivion or Skyrim.

Verdict: Breton has the highest floor. Their racial bonuses are always active, immediately impactful, and consistently useful throughout the game. They are the safest and most forgiving race while still remaining among the strongest.

Orc — Best Physical Race

The strongest warrior race.

Strengths:
The heaviest race, giving them naturally excellent movement speed.
25% Resist Magicka permanently reduces many dangerous hostile spells.
Berserk is arguably the best daily power and it grants:
Fortify Health – 20 points for 60 seconds on self.
Fortify Fatigue – 200 points for 60 seconds on self.
Fortify Attack – 100% higher chance to make a successful attack for 60 seconds on self.
Drain Attribute: Agility – 100 points for 60 seconds on self.
Berserk dramatically increases damage and accuracy but also the maximum fatigue. The additional maximum Fatigue will increase effectiveness in all areas, including Mercantile, Speechcraft, Alchemy and the success rate for casting spells.

Weaknesses:
-Berserk makes you far more prone to stagger and knock downs. This is not something to ignore on max difficulty.

Verdict: Although melee is riskier on max difficulty, Berserk mitigates many of its weaknesses while turning Orcs into exceptional combatants. Combined with their naturally high movement speed, they are arguably the strongest physical race in the game.

A Tier

Nord

Strengths:
Heavy race with excellent movement speed.
Tall stature.

Frost resistance 100%.
Shock resistance 50%.
Reliable melee performance.

Weaknesses:
No racial power comparable to Berserk.
Less magical potential than the S-tier races.

Verdict: A durable and mobile warrior that performs well throughout the game but lacks the exceptional racial advantages of the S-tier races.

Redguard

Strengths:
Excellent combat attributes.
Adrenaline Rush is an outstanding combat buff at any point in the game.
Long Blade proficiency makes the early game a breeze.
75% Poison resistance is useful.

Weaknesses:
Primarily benefits weapon combat, which is relatively weaker than magic on max difficulty.
Not as fast as other heavier warrior races.

Verdict: Probably the best Race on earlier levels. One of the strongest melee races, but lacks the versatility and scaling of Orcs.

B Tier

Dark Elf

Strengths:
Flexible between combat and magic.
75% Fire resistance is incredible.
Strong starting skills for multiple playstyles.
Sanctuary is a solid daily power.

Weaknesses:
No defining racial advantage that significantly shifts difficult encounters but no glaring weaknesses either.
Average speed.

Verdict: A versatile race that performs well in almost any build but doesn't excel enough to reach A tier. A solid Jack of all trades.

Imperial

Strengths:
Well-rounded attributes.
Good movement speed.
Adaptable to many builds.
High Personality.

Weaknesses:
Racial powers have limited combat impact. Star of the West is impressive as a spell but not game changing.

Verdict: Reliable and flexible, but overshadowed by races with stronger combat or magical advantages.

C Tier

Argonian

Strengths:
100% Poison Resistance.
Disease resistance.
Somewhat versatile but that's about it.

Weaknesses:
Cannot wear boots or full helmets. This is highly detrimental.
Utility-focused racial abilities have limited value during difficult combat encounters.
Average Speed.

Verdict: Useful exploration abilities but comparatively weak combat advantages.

D Tier

Bosmer

Strengths:
Good Marksman skills.
Beast Tongue has occasional utility but only very early on.

Weaknesses:
Very low weight results in the slowest movement in the game for the Male.
Archery is easy to level with trainers so their bonus are not that meaningful.
Very Niche.

Verdict: Bosmer's strengths are tied to a combat style that is simply inferior, especially on Max Difficulty.

Khajiit

Strengths:
High Agility.
Night Eye provides useful visibility.
Strong stealth-oriented starting skills.

Weaknesses:
Cannot wear boots or full helmets. This is highly detrimental.
Average speed.
Stealth advantages lose value as magic and enchanted items become more prominent.
Eye of Fear and Eye of Night are rather useless powers that can easily be replaced by cheap spells.

Verdict: Khajiit offer convenience rather than power. Their racial traits don't scale well into difficult combat, leaving them outclassed by races with stronger magical, defensive, or physical advantages. Arguably the worst race in the game.

Conclusion:

Ultimately, this tier list is simply one way of looking at Morrowind. While I wanted to evaluate the races as objectively as possible from a gameplay perspective, numbers and mechanics are only part of what makes the game so memorable.

If your favorite race ends up lower on the list, don't let that discourage you. Morrowind rewards creativity, experimentation, and roleplaying far more than perfect optimization. A character with an interesting backstory, a unique build, or a race you genuinely enjoy will almost always lead to a more memorable adventure than choosing the "best" option on paper.

If you have a different opinion on the rankings or think there's a mechanic I overlooked, I'd be happy to hear your reasoning. One of the great things about Morrowind is how much room there is for discussion and different playstyles.

Thank you for taking the time to read this tier list. I hope you found it informative, and even more importantly, I hope it helps you create a character you'll enjoy playing.

I would argue that Argonians should be lower, given that any character who progresses the Main Quest will become immune to disease via the corprus cure.

You're not wrong, but I think they can make decent hybrid mages, and their spear bonus gives them some leverage. Meanwhile, male Wood Elves are the slowest race in the game due to their short height, and Khajiit have quite literally nothing going for them apart from decent Agility. I could also totally see why someone would put Argonians in D tier, though. Being unable to wear boots and full helms is a gigantic detriment.

Thank you.
