Introduction:
This guide assumes a no-exploit playthrough.
If you choose to abuse mechanics such as Alchemy loops, excessive enchantment exploits, or other game-breaking systems, race and character creation become largely irrelevant. Almost any build can become overpowered.
This guide is written from the opposite perspective: a Hardcore playthrough on 100 Difficulty, where death means starting over and progression is earned through preparation rather than exploits.
While Nords, Orcs, Bretons and Redguards are generally more forgiving thanks to their durability and combat-oriented racial traits, the Altmer remains one of the most rewarding races to master. Their strengths lie not in brute force, but in versatility, magical utility, and access to some of the strongest tools Morrowind offers.
Understanding the Altmer:
Strengths:
-The largest starting Magicka pool of any race.
-High starting Enchant skill, making enchanted equipment more effective from the beginning.
-Strong magical skill bonuses.
-75% Disease Resistance.
-Good starting Endurance for a mage-oriented race.
The Altmer excels at using Morrowind's magical systems—spellcasting, enchantments, scrolls, and magical utility.
Weaknesses:
-Weakness to Fire, Frost, and Shock.
-Weakness to Magicka.
-Low starting Strength, limiting carrying capacity.
-Less forgiving than the more durable races during the early game.
These weaknesses are significant early on, but they can be managed through equipment, preparation, and good decision-making.
The Altmer Philosophy:
The greatest mistake many players make is treating the Altmer as a traditional glass-cannon mage.
On Maximum Difficulty, survival is usually determined by positioning and preparation rather than raw spell damage.
An experienced Altmer relies on:
-Enchanted items
-Scrolls
-Utility spells
-Mobility
-Battlefield control
Magic should solve problems rather than simply deal damage.
Effects such as Invisibility, Mark, Recall, Levitate, Open, Telekinesis, and Summon are often more valuable than direct offensive spells.
Birthsign:
The Atronach:
The Atronach is an excellent choice for players comfortable managing Stunted Magicka.
It provides:
-2× Intelligence Magicka bonus
-50% Spell Absorption
-Stunted Magicka
Spell Absorption greatly improves survivability against hostile spellcasters, while the increased Magicka pool allows frequent use of utility magic.
Because Hardcore play already encourages carrying potions, scrolls, and enchanted items, managing Stunted Magicka is generally manageable with preparation.
Other Birthsigns remain viable depending on the character you want to roleplay, but The Atronach offers one of the strongest combinations of offense and defense available to an Altmer.
Surviving Maximum Difficulty:
The goal is never to trade blows.
Instead:
-Prepare before every difficult fight
-Begin encounters from advantageous positions
-Use Invisibility when necessary
-Summon distractions
-Fight at range whenever possible
-Retreat if a battle turns against you
Recall is a survival tool, not a failure to win.
Essential Equipment:
Certain items consistently provide value throughout a Hardcore playthrough.
Ring of Aversion:
Invisibility is one of the strongest defensive tools in Morrowind.
It allows you to:
-Disengage
-Reposition
-Avoid incoming attacks
-Safely cast spells
-Safely use scrolls
Mark and Recall:
Always maintain access to Mark and Recall, whether through spells, scrolls, potions, or enchanted items.
They provide:
-Emergency escape
-Efficient travel
-Safer exploration
-Faster recovery after difficult encounters
Telekinesis:
Telekinesis allows trapped containers and doors to be activated from a safe distance, reducing unnecessary risk.
Levitation:
Levitation remains one of the strongest utility effects in the game.
It provides:
-Superior positioning
-Safer exploration
-Easier navigation
-Protection against many melee opponents
Utility Enchantments:
Reliable enchanted items providing effects such as:
-Open
-Detect Key
-Invisibility
-Levitation
-Mark
-Recall
often provide more value than increasing raw damage.
Managing Altmer Weaknesses:
Because of the Altmer's elemental and magical weaknesses, preparation matters.
Carry supplies appropriate to the encounters you expect.
Examples include:
-Healing potions
-Cure Poison
-Elemental resistance potions
-Useful scrolls
-Charged enchanted items
Preparation consistently outperforms improvisation.
Character Development:
Prioritize long-term survivability over rapid power growth.
Endurance remains valuable because it determines Health gained on level-up.
Natural skill progression is entirely viable and fits a Hardcore playstyle well. Defensive skills such as Armor and Block can be trained safely against weak opponents with sufficient preparation.
Enchanting:
Enchanting is where the Altmer truly excels.
Rather than relying on a limited Magicka pool during combat, enchanted equipment provides reliable access to powerful effects without repeated spellcasting.
A well-equipped Altmer carries solutions to nearly every problem.
Combat Principles:
Before difficult encounters:
-Restore fatigue
-Recharge enchanted items
-Carry healing supplies
-Carry resistance potions
-Prepare escape options
During combat:
-Avoid being surrounded
-Control positioning
-Create distance
-Use summons when appropriate
-Fight on your own terms
Maximum Difficulty rewards planning far more than aggression.
Main Quest:
Several Main Quest encounters become significantly more dangerous on Maximum Difficulty.
General preparation is more important than memorizing specific tactics.
Bring:
-Healing
-Elemental resistance
-Utility scrolls
-Charged enchanted items
-An escape option
Every difficult encounter becomes considerably more manageable when entered on your own terms.
Roleplaying an Altmer:
The Altmer naturally fit characters who value:
-Knowledge
-Magical research
-History
-Scholarship
-Magical craftsmanship
Appropriate factions include:
-Mages Guild
-House Telvanni
-House Hlaalu
Other choices remain entirely viable depending on your character concept.
Final Thoughts:
The Altmer is not the easiest race to play.
It is one of the least forgiving during the early game, requiring careful preparation and respect for its vulnerabilities.
In return, it offers unmatched flexibility through Morrowind's magical systems.
A successful Altmer survives not because they are physically superior, but because they understand when to fight, when to retreat, and how to shape every encounter to their advantage.
The High Elf rewards knowledge, preparation, and patience.
Master those, and few challenges in Morrowind remain insurmountable.

Re: High Elf Hardcore Guide (100% Difficulty)
Overall, an interesting guide. A few things did jump out at me while reading it:
)
As I said, an interesting guide with lots of food for thought. Thanks for writing it!
This is incorrect. While it may be true in Skyrim, in Morrowind height affects neither running speed (see the Notes; in any event, if height did affect running speed Altmer would be 10% faster, not 8%) nor damage.ElderScrolls wrote: • Because of Height, High Elves Run 8% Faster and Hit 8% Harder (Both Female & Male).
There is nothing in Bolvyn Venim's script (bolvynScript) which makes him inherently unhittable by spells. It's the fact that you're floating above him out of melee range that will make him run around randomly and therefore very difficult to target precisely. The same holds true for any melee character if you're in a position where they can't reach you. One other minor note about Venim is that he is actually equipped with a Deadric Dai-katana (not Katana) (which is all the more reason to stay the heck away from himElderScrolls wrote: • Bolvyn Venim: ... he is scripted in a way where no spells can hit him....
Note that the Reflect portion of the ring will never actually trigger since all incoming spells are absorbed first.ElderScrolls wrote: • The Ring of Equity ... provides 30 seconds 100% Spell Absorption and a 70% Reflect.
Amulets of Mark can also occasionally be found as random loot. Galtis Serethi in Shurinbaal also has one on his person.ElderScrolls wrote: • Amulet of Mark: Initially, you will want to use Mark Potions and can do so forever since they are so cheap. Making an Amulet of Mark though, is quite cheap and is a great insurance. It can be created on nearly any piece of clothing for about 17 000$
You might want to note that activating anything, such as talking to or attacking somebody, picking up an item, opening a door or container, or any other action other than just moving will cancel the spell. If you're attacking an opponent, you will need to re-cast invisibility after casting a scroll if you want to stay invisible, otherwise your opponent will see you and start coming straight after you again. Depending on personal preferences and playstyle, a combination of sneak and chameleon may be preferable when engaging opponents since this combination may allow you to remain undetected while continuing to attack, depending on the level of the skill/spell. I do agree that Invisibility can be quite useful in situations which do not require interactions.ElderScrolls wrote: • always use the Ring of Aversion to be Invisible when required

Re: High Elf Hardcore Guide (100% Difficulty)
Good Evening Wolfborn, thank you for taking the time to read my guide
This thread (http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/128616 ... selection/) is interesting and seems to point toward the fact it holds true for Oblivion and Morrowind. AKB also confirmed this to me in the Discord that it was actually common knowledge. I would like to test it myself so I can 100% confirm it but I do not know how. From what I have been reading online though, it holds true for all three games. This is incorrect. While it may be true in Skyrim, in Morrowind height affects neither running speed (see the Notes; in any event, if height did affect running speed Altmer would be 10% faster, not 8%) nor damage.
Whether it is Venim script or something else in the Arena script, spells go through him as if he was invisible. Even Summons can't hit him with destruction spells and the only way to hit him with a spell is to throw it on the ground right next to him. The reason for this was for the duel to be 'fair' and I remember vaguely that Venim will even tell you that spells are cheap and are prohibited in the duel. There is nothing in Bolvyn Venim's script (bolvynScript) which makes him inherently unhittable by spells. True!Note that the Reflect portion of the ring will never actually trigger since all incoming spells are absorbed first.
I consider this item the holy grail of randomized magic items in crates.Amulets of Mark can also occasionally be found as random loot. Galtis Serethi in Shurinbaal also has one on his person.
Absolutely, I use this item so much that I thought it was obvious but it's actually a good point. You always have to calculate how many charges you have. This item is your ultimate lifesaver early on.You might want to note that activating anything, such as talking to or attacking somebody, picking up an item, opening a door or container, or any other action other than just moving will cancel the spell

Re: High Elf Hardcore Guide (100% Difficulty)
Looking throught the thread you linked, the discussion is pretty much exclusively about Skyrim. There's only one post I saw that mentions Morrowind in passing, and that only to say that size doesn't seem to affect damage in said game. Nowhere in that thread is there any evidence presented that height affects movement speed or damage in Morrowind.ElderScrolls wrote:This thread (http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/128616 ... selection/) is interesting and seems to point toward the fact it holds true for Oblivion and Morrowind. I'm not disputing that height does affect movement speed in Skyrim, or even Oblivion. That's well-known and mentioned in the relevant wiki articles for both games. In addition, I acknowledge that movement speed does differ between races in Morrowind as well--but according to both the wiki and the Morrowind Code Patch (which has obviously analyzed the relevant code) movement speed in Morrowind is affected by weight, not height. Since Altmer in Morrowind have a weight factor of 1.0 (versus a height factor of 1.1), they shouldn't move any faster than "normal" (even though this is counter-intuitive from a real-world perspective).
If you'd like to test this, the way to do so would be to take two characters of similar weight factor but different height factor (e.g. an Altmer vs. a Dunmer male; both have a weight factor of 1.0; the Altmer height factor is 1.1 while the Dunmer male height factor is 1.0). Ensure both characters have the same Speed, Strength, and Athletics level values, as well as the same encumbrance (i.e. both are carrying the same amount of "weight"). Ensure you're not using the "Racial variation in speed fix" option in the Morrowind Code Patch (if you're using MCP). Find a long, straight stretch of landscape and pick two landmarks a reasonable distance apart such that it will take a good amount of time for the characters to walk between them (30 seconds or more). Time how long it takes for each character to walk between the two landmarks and compare the times. If height does affect movement speed the Altmer should traverse the distance in 10% less time than the Dunmer; on the other hand, if it's the weight factor which affects speed there should be no difference in times.
I'd be very interested to try this out myself, but unfortunately I won't have any time to do so in the near future. If/when I do get around to testing this I'll post the results. If you have the time, energy and inclination to try this out, I'd be very interested in seeing the results of your testing.
Interesting. I have to admit that I've never faced Venim with a spellcaster before (all my characters which I've played to completion so far have been physical damage-oriented), so I've never experienced this for myself. There's nothing in his dialogue that I can find in the CS which mentions spells being prohibited. (You might be remembering a dialogue about duels which mentions that some people consider looting a defeated opponent to be "dishonorable".)ElderScrolls wrote:Whether it is Venim script or something else in the Arena script, spells go through him as if he was invisible. I'm currently in the early stages of playing a sorceress, so I'll definitely keep an eye out for this when she reaches the point of having to face him (which won't be anytime soon, though). Thanks for the heads-up.

Re: High Elf Hardcore Guide (100% Difficulty)
Good Morning Wolfborn
As for Venim maybe it has been fixed by a certain mod or MCP but I remember clearly facing him scrolls & summons and nothing was hitting him.
Il take the time to test this and share the results. I appreciate your corrections and precisions when it comes to Morrowind and I will try to be more factual before posting in the future. If I am wrong, the points will be corrected accordingly and I will give you credits for correcting me on such mistakes.I'd be very interested to try this out myself, but unfortunately I won't have any time to do so in the near future. Re: High Elf Hardcore Guide (100% Difficulty)
Hi ElderScrolls!
).
You might want to consider adding an Imperial male to the test as well. Imperial males have a height factor of 1.0 (same as the Dunmer male) but a weight factor of 1.25 (greater than Altmer and Dunmer). Using these three characters in the test should give a pretty good indication of whether it's height, weight, or both that play a factor.
Looking forward to seeing the results!
Thanks in advance for taking time to test this. As I said, I'd really like to test this myself since it's bugging me now, and I have some ideas on how to set up a test (mod in a [very] long, straight interior corridor and use a script for the timing), but I'm working extra days at work for the next three months and have less time than usual to devote to Morrowind, so I may not get around to it until Christmas (so don't hold your breathElderScrolls wrote:Il take the time to test this and share the results. Re: High Elf Hardcore Guide (100% Difficulty)
Hello again my Friend,Looking forward to seeing the results!
I took the time to test and from what I gathered, you were absolutely right. It seems that Height as no effect on speed and weight does. In the light of this, Male Orcs have the capability to be the fastest race in the game. Male Imperials & Nords are winning the silver medals. Bosmers & Female Dunmers are the worst.
Seems like that is just another excuse to play Nords, this Race is more Overpowered than what I previously thought!
I will edit that point out of the 'Pros' section of my guide.
Thank you!
Edit: Quite frankly, Male Orcs are so fast, you do not even need to test it at all. You just feel how much faster they are, it's quite insane.
