Re: M'aiq the Liar, who he is?
I've always thought M'aiq to just be so insane he's gone beyond insane. On another level. Ascended. Too smart for all of us. We'll never know why or how, but he is.
The greatest mystery of our time, indeed.

He's just a guy with a bad habit of lying.

He's just an avatar of the devs used to mock fans of the previous games in the series.
You're too late. I gave the job to some spellsword.

I've always loved the theory that M'aiq is an avatar of Sheogorath on the mortal world, keeping an eye on things and spreading some minor insanity.
Oh for the love of little green tomatoes...

He's a cat.
Oh, what am I kidding. He's not even my final form.

Re: M'aiq the Liar, who he is?
M'aiq the Liar is a descendant of a long line of ancestors who were all named Qia'm, but somewhere along the way the name changed to M'aiq, and the practice has continued to this day.
The story goes that Pawpaw Qia'm asked a carpenter to craft a crib for his new baby boy Kitten Qia'm, but the carpenter had eaten too much moon sugar candy and engraved the name on the headboard backwards by mistake. Then everyone kept calling the baby boy M'aiq despite Pawpaw Qia'm's insistence that his name was actually Kitten Qia'm. Apparently the long line of Qia'ms had such a well-known fascination with fuzzy tails that everyone assumed Pawpaw Qia'm was just pulling their tails again.
That very first M'aiq knew that his real name was Qia'm, but as he grew older and kept telling everyone that he was M'aiq, not Qia'm, they started calling him M'aiq the Liar. From then on, it has been the sad fate of all M'aiqs to tell the absolute truth but to not be believed. Such is the power of reputation.
EDIT-- Anyone who's talked to M'aiq in ESO knows that I stole the reference to Qia'm from there, but then I filled out the backstory behind that claim. Since (if I remember correctly) the M'aiq in ESO says that his father said that his name was actually Qia'm, I figure ESO M'aiq's pawpaw was Kitten Qia'm from my backstory, and his own son didn't even believe that his real name was Qia'm.

Re: M'aiq the Liar, who he is?
I've always thought of him as the devs incarnating themselves in the ES world. So, in a sense, I guess he's a being from another world, trapped (or choosing to stay) eternally wandering the lands of Tamriel.
