Re: The food thread
Idk, bacon is nice n all, but the prospect of ketchup(something that is already salty) with bacon just seems off-putting :/. And as much as I love bacon in a sandwich or paired with eggs in any/every way.. Making a meal out of only bacon hurts my stomach to think about X<
And do bear with me, bc almost every day to work I get myself the same thing at subway, which is basically a BLT on steriods(whole lots of veg, some sweet onion sauce n chipotle, [&@%!] yes). You don't need to tell me all about a good bacon sandwich, I'm practically living off of them(on top of salads, bc hey, Panera Bread exists, and nobody wants to pay for hospital food)
----
Btw yall, is it more or less wrong that I'm eating cereal with chopped dates and bananas? Bc it literally seems like I discovered some taboo pleasure

And you said melon milk was gross.

Re: The food thread
Hey hey hey, what's wrong with it? Their sweet, caramel-like. How can you say that doesn't go good with bananas or(i.e in my case "and") milk?
@Cass: Definitely not one of those sugary cereals. No. I normally eat oats or those fiber-rich ones, n always cinnamon or berry(tho how can I say no to raisin bran, that [&@%!] is childhood) Granted, when I do eat cereal I always load it up with other stuff(see any of my posts about cereal for reference)

Re: The food thread
So question? In a very hypothetical question
Which is better to make for a date?
Sesame chicken with stir-fried veg and rice ~or~ Linguine with a roasted bell pepper & garlic sauce and basil chicken
Just wondering, ya know

Very hypothetical, I see.
I'm no expert on dates (as we all very well know), but I think option 2 sounds better.

Also, I'm sure we all know Cass's definition of the perfect date meal would include homemade ramen with a glass of melon milk

Ah, young love. How it DIGUSTS ME! *Rage drinks tea, rage consumes crumpets and tuts loudly*
Provided that I am in a position to do so, meat shall be back on the menu, boys! And girls. Ok, frozen meat has been on the menu but i mean proper meat. The stuff that you have to prep and cook yourself. None of this frozen stuff that you bung into the oven though that is good.
I may be having a voluntary work's christmas lunch in the next few weeks. It depends on what i'm doing.
Also, Melon milk. That is still being discussed? Just no.
Same to freaking chicken in a can! WHO USES THAT!? It's small roasted chickens in a can. Just no. Same with fishheads in a can. And other unusual stuff in a can. What's next? Sprayable tea? *eye twitches*

Re: The food thread
To commemorate Dov's good mood, I'm gonna do this:
*The new foreign exchange student has gone missing*
*All eyes look to Cass*
*Suspicion intensifies*
-------------
Speaking of ramen. I actually went and bought some good quality instant ramen not too long ago
. Not any of that super cheap instant stuff(tho I gotta admit, it's still trash but I love it as a rare treat), no, if anything it's 4x the price.
Now then, obviously, I only get spicy ramen* ^_^ chicken if need be, but I do love some beef. Well, lucky to say.. The brand of ramen has spicy beef as the default flavor, after all, my only options where normal or BLACK(i.e double broth packets i.e yes please) and the noodles themselves are so much better ^_^ none of that stringy [&@%!], no, this actually has enough bite to it. Seriously, why have I never bought this 'gourmet' brand before? (Bc I'm An' idiot, duh)

In it's defense, it is from Japan.. Or was it China? Korea? Meh, doesn't matter, point being, things are weird over there(Don't try to deny it, that's why we love 'em)Melon milk. That is still being discussed?

Re: The food thread
Question for an English person: Can you check a can of baked beans (assuming you have one laying around) and post back how much sugar it has in it? I was thinking about making an English breakfast but our average can of baked beans in the US has so much sugar in it I wont eat it. It's gross. I think I remember Aarah mentioning baked beans once and it was the same brand but they may be flavored differently.

Re: The food thread
As far as I can see:
per 100g
Heinz 4.7g
Branston 5.7g
M&S Own Brand 5.1g
Corale ~4.5g (got some sausages in there as well though
)
That's just going by the 'Information Panel' mind you. Haven't dug through the ingredients for any 'stealth sugar' or anything.

Re: The food thread
Thanks. But wow same as here, so much for Americans having shoddy palettes. I more or less gave up sugar a while ago and now I'm hyper sensitive to it. There're foods I used to love and now I can't tolerate them.
Oh and garden update: As of now I have 7 swiss chard, 8 lettuce (half romaine, half summer bib), 8 broccoli (half artworks, half green comet), 2 gong bao (thai/chili peppers), 2 tomatoes (1 patio, 1 better boy) and 1 datil as well as the same old herbs; parsley, basil, oregano, mint and rosemary.

Re: The food thread
If I'm not mistaken, between American vs British baked beans.. It's the contrast between the 'sauce' being the defining difference i.e literally drenched in brown sugar vs just the simple tomato sauce. So it should come to no surprise American baked beans are alot sweeter, and practically twice the amount of sugar compared to their British counterparts
Leroy. At some of your local supermarkets check the exported goods/British section for some Heinz beans and not the regular can they sell commonly in the states. You can buy Jaffas while your at it(and promptly throw them in the trash where they belong)

Re: The food thread
Might depend on the brand then. I did a quick google search and found some US Baked Beans (eg Van Camp's) that appear to have almost 9g of sugar per 100g.
In any case I'd recommend tinned chopped tomatoes as a suitable 'English Breakfast baked beans replacement'.

"Beta, what are ya doing?"
-Making dinner
"Oooo, what ya making?"
-Corn soup
"........"
-Trust me, it's better than it sounds
Edit: So dinner was phenomenal ^_^ But no surprise there, I was basing the soup off of this recipe for Mexican Street corn soup
I did do some things differently >_> Like garnishing it with some homemade flour tortilla chips instead of bacon or such. I also didn't bother with the jalapenos since I'm really not a fan of them raw

I successfully made non-scrambled eggs today!
I know that's like junior culinary fare but I'm excited about it. I'm so far behind on learning how to cook like most people my age, so to make something that not only survives being potentially burned, but also tastes good, is a nice baby step.

Am thinking more about slowly learning to cook Asian foods. I figure I'll try a new dish per month. First is kung pao chicken. Turns out kung pao is gong bao and since I've those growing fresh in my yard it only makes sense. I'm looking forward to it, was wondering what to do with those peppers.

Christmas dinner pizza? On the bright side, it probably sounds better than what I'll be having. (i.e hospital food i.e probably some overpriced salad or chips)
Speaking of, today(tomorrow?) I'll be baking up something good to bring to work ^_^. How does [Fudge filled chocolate cupcakes with a peanut butter icing] sound?
