Re: What are you watching at the moment?
A short webcomic by the name of A Tale of Two Rulers
I am both deeply uncomfortable and entertained.. By.. By this webcomic? A Zelda webcomic? A charming, humanizing, ship sailing, humorous webcomic? It's.. Got me hooked.
Maybe it's the Zelda fan in me, or the plot/writing.. Or maybe.. I'm just trash.. But.. I am genuinely engaged
Found this out thanks to a comic dub and it was more than worth the try.. And blown away my suspicions(I honestly thought it would just be a [&@%!] fanfic RomComic thing)
----
Also Cass, if you see this, forget everything I just said. Yes, everything. Yes, walk away, do no be snared! Zelda fan or not, the ship is real and the ship is sailing! It's sailing Cassandra! It's sailing! Oh no! Now it's sinking! I'm sinking with the ship! It's not too late to save yourself! Run, run before it's.. *Glub glub glub*

Re: What are you watching at the moment?
Nope nope nope nope. I can't. It's Zelda. I've never played a Zelda game before. Why in the world would I get into something that's Zelda? There isn't anything there for me. No, not at all. I should just not even click on those extremely tempting links you've placed. No siree. Not for me. Well, maybe a peek would be fine... Ha, okay. I'm good. A ship? I don't see any ships. Not at all. It's not like I saw anything interesting there. Nope, nothing to see here, folks. I'm not even going to start that video. I'm going to close the tab before it loads. I'm walking away, Beta. I'm walking away! Look, I'm going! I'm turning my back right now, because anything more and I'm a goner. You know how much I love my ships.

To be perfectly honest, neither do I. Tired me is a terrible and wonderful thing.
But no, I'm not even going to look into it more. Because it does seem really tempting, and I can't get into something like that right now.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I've got a couple things on the go right now.
Book 4 of The Wheel of Time is on my nightstand. I'm trying to get through the series now that it's finished. I really like Brandon Sanderson's work so I'm curious to see what he's done with this property.
I've also been reading Book 4 of Otherland on my commutes to and from work.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I read through the Wheel of Time from last August up through this April, and it was quite the ride! I hope you're enjoying Book 4, it's one of the best entries in the series. Many people say that books 8-10 are a bit hard to get through, but I personally found only 10 to be particularly boring, so hopefully you can get through to the end - and I can promise it will be so worth it if you do. Sanderson helps bring a magnificent end to the series; the final book is basically one unyielding climax!skullclutter wrote:I've got a couple things on the go right now.

Speaking of Sanderson, I started reading Mistborn right after finishing WoT, and I'm currently on the final book in the first trilogy, The Hero of Ages. It's quite an enjoyable series, though I see what people mean when they say he improved a lot between Mistborn and the Stormlight Archive (having caught up on the latter series last year). In between the first two Mistborn books I also started reading the Broken Empire trilogy by Mark Lawrence, and I'll read the latter two volumes once I'm done The Hero of Ages.
Start the groove.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I'm about 3/4 of the way through book 4 right now and things are definitely starting to get interesting. I'm enjoying the Aes Sedai plots a lot more than the 'main' plot right now, but I'm sure Rand's story will pick up eventually. Hopefully the promise of Sandersonian goodness to come will help me get through book 10.Dirty Spaceman wrote: I read through the Wheel of Time from last August up through this April, and it was quite the ride! I'm eagerly awaiting the next Stormlight Archive book, but in the meantime I picked up the second Mistborn Trilogy that I'll start on once I finish Otherland. How is Broken Empire? That one's caught my eye on the bookstore shelf a few times.
I also highly recommend Brent Weeks. I've also got Blood Mirror on my shelf waiting for time to read it.
That's the nice thing about having a long train ride into work every day. I get a lot of reading done.

Broken Empire is really good, though definitely not for the faint of heart. It's pretty dark and brutal at times, and has a protagonist who's closer to the anti- end of the anti-hero spectrum. It's a great ride so far, though, with a lot of cool twists and turns.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I keep forgetting we have this thread.
One of the perks of volunteering at a bookshop is reading books when it's dead or very quiet. I've read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Tis a very good crime thriller and disturbing in the right ways. I mean, it's disturbing to read as it's intended to not disturbing unintentionally.. The disturbing parts occur at the climax and it maintains it's whodunnit mystery for most of the plot whilst slowly putting together the pieces. I do dislike that there were unnecessary fade to black scenes but according to the TVtropes Trivia page, Larrason had to do it because of publisher reasons. I've not delved into crime before(That's gonna to be taken out of context one day isn't it?) but this was a superb introduction to the genre. Reserved a copy of The Girl that Played with Fire at the local library and will read the rest of the millunem.... Millieum... oh, sod it. M trillogy.
I've borrowed out of a sadistic curiosity Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I've read enough of it to determine that it's bad fanfiction that more or less gives the bird to the HP universe and introduces a ton of plot holes. Along with it being a "Ok, if they can do that? Why not do X?" thing. And bad fanfiction. I'm curious to see how bad it is and i'm considering reviewing it. I'm considering doing a series called A Dovah Critiques: X in this subforum and this would be perfect for a first thing. I grew up with the books. Got all the films, played most of the games.
This? This is awful. An awful piece of fanfiction that got overhyped, hyped up as the 8th book and it's not. One could argue it can be because it techincally is part of the main series but it is more spin off then main and well, it is just awful. Heck, Harry isn't even a main character for most of it.
They could have and should have focused on the offsprings of Harry,Ron and Hermonie attending Hogwarts. That is perfect for a play and if there is one thing I would like to see, it is the magical educational side to it.
EDIT: It's worse then i thought it is. It's [&@%!]. It's stupid. It's does dumb things and has random moments for the sake of it. Harry is butchered in some parts. Some spells don't work as previously shown in the main series. And stupid. I can't think of many good things to say about it and i'm almost nearing the last quarter of it. Seriously, this is just a [&@%!] fanfiction and raises so many issues because of time turner bs.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
So I was in the middle of reading the Firekeeper saga by Jane Lindskold, but then I got distracted by rereading the Anne of Green Gables series by L M Montgomery. Mostly because my mom was excited by the Netflix series of the books, and asked me what I thought, and I was so angry at the show that I needed to go back and reread my beloved childhood books.
But I'll get back to Firekeeper after.
I wish I read faster, though; my partners both are super fast readers, and it seems to take me forever.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I read the Milluem Trilogy. (The Girl with/That trilogy. Dragon tattoo, Played with Fire and Kicked the hornet's nest) Tis a fantastic set of crime books and each veer into different themes. The first one is a murder mystery that doesn't really have anything else to do with the other two books but does serve to introduce the readers to the characters, establish stuff whilst being it's own thing. The second is a crime thriller and the third is a legal drama. I find the third one to be a bit dull but that is because the first two are more packed with activity. The third one more or less revolves around the court case of the main(ish) character. Books 2 and 3 are tied together thus i wouldn't recommend reading just one of the two. You can get away with just the second one but you will want to follow it up. It is a shame that Stieg Larrson died just before they were published as the planned 10(i've heard it's either 10 or 7) books would have been interesting to read. The Girl with the Spider's web is said to be meh and retcon heavy.
Though there is er... quite a lot of fanservice in the first two books but seems to have been forced by the publisher. I also saw the first swedish film. Am planning on watching the second one at some point this week.
I do want to read books similiar to it thus the library shall prevail. If not, oh well.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
Done quite a lot of reading in the past few weeks. Been reading The Eagle Series. Quite good. Tis about two legionaries that keep getting into situations and ranges from political plots to miltary skirmishes. Would recommend if ye love Romans. Reading Until The Sea Gives Up Her Dead.
Book. No. You do not work your title into the story in such an obvious way. I groaned when i read it and well, just struggling to get into it. Due back on thursday but gonna to say [&@%!] it, return it. May re-read the The Girl trilogy as mentioned in my last post. Discovered that a new one is out but the title is erugh. It's called A girl that takes an eye for an eye or something like that. Tbh, i'm not willing to read any more of it due to the author being deceased and don't want to taint the trilogy opinion with the newer books. Is that a bad reason for not giving it a chance?

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I've been reading The Perfect Heresy by Stephen O'Shea which is a history book about the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade in 12th and 13th Century Southern France. It's interesting I'm liking it, it's a part of history I have a real interest in so I'm happy to dig deeper. I am a notoriously slow reader though, I just keep putting off books I am reading, it's why I mostly read short stories I can get through in a single sitting.
After this I'm not sure if I want to read The Player of Games by Iain M Banks or Ghost in the Shell manga.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I'm currently reading Assassin's Fate by Robin Hobb. Most of the books she's written under that pen name are tied together, the only exceptions being the "Soldier Son" trilogy. I'm not sure what prompted me to pick up Assassin's Apprentice several years ago, because I wasn't overly thrilled by all the "assassin mania" in video games and movies. But as soon as I read that first book, I was hooked on her books, because she is a fabulous writer. If you've never read any of her books, I highly recommend them-- but you must be sure you start with Assassin's Apprentice, since that's the first book. And while her other books in the same series are referred to as individual trilogies-- and one tetralogy-- you really should read them in the order they were written, because even if the settings and events in one group of books (e.g., the "Liveship Traders" trilogy) seem at first to be unrelated to the earlier books, they all take place within the same world, and the stories and characters become closely interwoven over time.

Anyways, at work I've been reading the Eragon series, which is, okay I guess. Not a terrible fantasy series, but it ain't no Bartimeaus. Currently at Brisinger i.e the 3rd book
I honestly should pick up something more to my tastes tho. Maybe the TES books or something like one of the early H.P Lovecraft books

If you're looking for recommendations, The Colour Out of Space and The Whisperer in Darkness are two of his best novellas. They're probably like 12,000-16,000 words. If you want something really short, From Beyond which is like 3000 words.BetaB17 wrote:I honestly should pick up something more to my tastes tho. I'm currently reading Mistborn: The Final Empire, and I'm actually enjoying it. I'm trying to get into actual books, instead of just reading manga. I've only read like two other books these last few years, but Mistborn seems the easiest for me to get into.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
Brandon Sanderson is a fantastic author. I'm looking forward to Oathbringer, the third book in his Stormlight Archive series.sinister wrote:I'm currently reading Mistborn: The Final Empire, and I'm actually enjoying it.
If you like steampunk, I heartily recommend The Aeronaut's Windlass by Jim Butcher. Or if you prefer modern gothic-- witches, warlocks, werewolves, vampires, fairies, and so forth, in a big city setting-- then The Dresden Files might be more your style. His Codex Alera series was also well-written, although I started to get fatigued with the series by the third or fourth book, and was somewhat relieved when it finally concluded with the sixth book.
I finally finished Assassin's Fate by Robin Hobb. Once upon a time I would have devoured it in a week or less, despite its length; but I've grown more leisurely in my reading, especially after getting sucked into The Elder Scrolls Online.
The next book I'm looking forward to reading is The Mongrel Mage by L. E. Modesitt, Jr., due out next month.
In the meantime, I think I'll finally start reading H. P. Lovecraft The Fiction Complete and Unabridged.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
@SeaGtGruff YESSS OATHBRINGER HYPE!!!
And I can definitely second all those Butcher recommendations, the Dresden Files are fantastic and Aeronaut's Windlass is a promising start for a new series. I'm actually reading the Codex Alera for the first time now - I just started book 5. I kind of get what you mean about fatigue; I've enjoyed all the books so far, but the type of antagonist that was used in Book 2 is really not my style, so it's a bit annoying (though inevitable) that they're back for the last two novels.
I'm a big Sanderson fan as well, as I made evident with my first statement, and @sinister I'm glad you're enjoying Mistborn! It's a real fun series, and you'll definitely want to check out the second saga after you're done the original trilogy - it's the stronger of the two, IMO.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I finished Bryan Lee O'Malley's Seconds. It's a sweet little graphic novel about restaurants, mushrooms, love, growing up, and the dire temporal consequences of tampering with the fabric of reality.
Also it's by the same guy who did Scott Pilgrim. Hella author. Hella artist. Love it.

Re: The 'What are you reading at the moment' thread
I've been reading H. P. Lovecraft, although I've been taking it slow. The stories in the collection are presented in the order they were written, and I haven't made it very far yet. His early stories don't strike me as being the least bit scary-- interesting yes, but not scary. Hopefully as I get further along things will pick up.
