Re: Welcomes and Goodbyes

Post by SeaGtGruff »

I finally joined the forums, after having used the wiki for years. There are other Elder Scrolls wikis and forums, but UESP is the one for me! :)

The first ES game I ever bought was Morrowind: GOTY, but that was back when I used to buy a lot of RPG/adventure games when they were on sale at Best Buy and then never get around to installing and playing them. (That was money well spent!)

Then I bought Oblivion when it came out, which was the first ES game I actually played. I've played it many times, but have finished the main quest only once. I'm going to have to restart it again, because my current game is playable as long as I don't get too close to the Oblivioin gate outside of Chorrol, otherwise it freezes-- presumably due to the reference ID bug-- so I won't be able to complete the main quest unless I restart, and can enter or leave Chorrol only by the north gate. Besides, I eventually want to restart it anyway and complete the main game with all add-ons disabled, then play the add-ons in order of release. I don't like how some of the add-ons change certain things-- like the temple in Anvil-- before I've had a chance to enjoy the unaltered versions. Also, it seems odd to be handed all sorts of notes about inheriting some place or other, or a letter asking if I would please, please help repair the Orrery, before I've even made it out of the Imperial sewers. ("Hey, wait! Don't run off! Could you please show me the way out of this place, preferably one that isn't crawling with goblins? And while you're at it, could you maybe help me carry some of this junk out of here so I can sell it?")

Eventually I remembered that I already had Morrowind, too, so I installed it and started playing. Initial reaction: Ew, the graphics! Delayed reaction: Soup is on, baby! I've read posts on Steam by people (trolls are people, too, aren't they?) who love to diss Morrowind for various reasons, but I love it. I recently bought it again on Steam so I can move back and forth between my desktop PC and my laptop, and have also finally installed all of the official add-ons. I've finished the main quest (again), and am now on a mission to visit every location in the game, but my current game is mostly on hold for now.

I installed the free download of Arena some years ago, but couldn't get the hang of the controls at that time, and never made it out of the Imperial Dungeons.

Then came Skyrim, although I have the "plain vanilla" version with no add-ons. Based on all the caustic comments I've read on Steam, I'm glad I never upgraded to the Special Edition. I've restarted several dozen times, and have completed the main quest once, but my current game is mostly on hold for now. It gets kind of boring when you've legendaried your skills so many times that you're basically an impervious god with fur growing out of your ears.

Now that I've played through ES3, ES4, and ES5 at least once each, I've decided to go back and play Arena. I completed the main quest, but now I've started over (for the dozenthish time) with the intention of mapping and documenting everything. That's the main reason I finally joined the wiki and forums, so most of my blabbering will probably be about Arena, at least initially. I don't mind Arena's primitive graphics and gameplay-- it reminds me somewhat of the Ultima: Underworld games, which I used to love playing many years ago.

Atarians may recognize my online name from the AtariAge forums, but I haven't been very active there since getting back into my keyboards and music. My online name is my original AOL screen name from when I first went online in 1995-- a slightly abbreviated pun combining my Sun sign (Capricorn the Sea Goat) with "Billy Goats Gruff." Not that that's important, but some people have misinterpreted it as "Sea Gate Gruff" or (my favorite) "Sergeant Gruff," so I thought I should set the record straight from the get-go. You can call me "Sea," "Gruff," "SGG," "Ossifer Gruff'n'stuff," or "Mike"! ;)

Hi there, Mike!
Welcome to the forums!
"UESP is the one for me!" should be a slogan we have on t-shirts. It's both catchy...and true! :P
Sounds like you've had a go at all the classic ES games. Any plans to try ESO or Legends?
In terms of Skyrim, I do recommend the DLC of Dragonborn, Dawnguard and Hearthfire. They really refresh the game if you've been playing vanilla for a while, as well as adding a lot of new stories, perks and areas.

Hope you enjoy it here and will be good to receive some Arena based discussion, in addition to any other subforum you care to venture into.

I've been meaning to buy the add-ons for Skyrim, but keep waiting for them to go on sale for half price or whatever. ;) I was about to buy them during the last Steam sale, but the individual expansions were apparently hidden to "encourage" people to buy the special edition or whatever it's called-- and while I was tempted to get that version, I saw a bunch of scathing posts from people who were complaining about changes in the special edition (something to do with mods and add-ons), so I decided against it. And now that I've decided to play through all of the ES games in order, I'm in less hurry to buy the expansions for Skyrim. I haven't bought ESO yet, but will do so eventually.

Skyrim add-ons are likely to stay around the same price for a while given the recent slew of re-releases, honestly.

But hey, it's good to have you on board. I'm glad so many folks from the wiki are deciding to give us a look. Maybe tell them fools we've got a nice community here!

It's still weird to me how separated we can be from y'all, haha.

Thank you for the welcome, Aarah and Unionhack!

Aarah, I should have thanked you properly last night, but I was in a rush to get dinner and then watch Game of Thrones. What an awesome season ender!

Unionhack, yeah, I don't expect the Skyrim expansions to go down much except maybe during sales. And judging from the way they disappeared during the last Steam/Bethesda sale-- and weren't discounted if you did manage to find a link to them-- I should go ahead and buy them now before they "disappear" for good.

ADDENDUM - Darn it, there's a sale going on, so I couldn't buy the individual expansions for the original Skyrim. So I broke down and bought the bundle, which for me includes Skyrim Special Edition, ESO Gold Edition, and ESO Morrowind Digital Collectors Edition. You guys might not be seeing me again for a while! I'm still not 100% clear on the deal with Skyrim Special Edition as far as adding DLC, but I guess I'll find out-- and hopefully my original Skyrim will still be available if I want it for some reason.

No problem at all!

Looks like you bought yourself a good haul of games there!
I think you're right...that's your spare time covered for the rest of the year. :P
Hope you like ESO. Let us know what you think of it.

Do you mean DLC as in modded DLC, or the official Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn DLCs? As far as I know, the official DLCs are automatically included with Skyrim Special Edition.

I'm still a little tempted to get into ESO, but I've been holding off. I hope you enjoy it!

Yes, I mean fan-made DLC, not any of Bethesda's official DLC. Apparently there's a change where only DLC that's available through the Steam Store can be installed, or something like that. I've actually never tried any of the fan-made DLC in any of the other ES games yet, so I guess it's no big deal to me-- but I'd certainly like to have the option of adding unofficial DLC if I want to. :p

Ah, gotcha. I'm a newer fan who's only played vanilla Skyrim Special Edition so things like the Bruma DLC are totally new to me (both lore and mods).

Hello, everyone! I am JJarCS43, but just call me Joe for short. I started playing The Elder Scrolls when I first got my PS3. My first four games on the PS3 were Oblivion GOTY Edition, Skyrim, GTA IV, and Dead Island. I played both games to completion (save for the Knights of the Nine DLC), and eventually got Morrowind on the PC. I've never finished it (or even got far tbh). I've also played the first few quests of both Arena and Daggerfall. A little about myself is that I'm a programmer nerd majoring in Computer Science. I'm a college freshman and I'm in my Intro to C Programming class as I'm writing this. I don't really know what else to say, so I'd be happy to answer any questions you have for me!

Welcome, Joe! Although your username makes me want to call you "JJ," would that be okay? :)

Keep at Morrowind and you probably won't regret it. If you're coming from the later games, then you do need to get used to the differences in the gameplay-- e.g., trying to improve your conversation skills seems to be a random hit-or-miss, as does picking locks-- but the game environment is rich with possibilities for exploring.

Hello UESP. I'm Mournblade94 a longtime user of this site. I am in the NA XBOX guild for UESP and very active. I have wanted to join the scholars here for quite some time. I do not have an avatar yet as it is disabled at the moment, but I will endeavor to get one soon. I hope to be able to contribute to any missing lore on this site, and to lend my aid to the ESO Quest pages to fill them out.

I began my Journey of Tamriel in 1994 when I left the Navy and I bought Arena.

It says my avatar functionality is disabled at the moment.

Many Thanks!

Hi, there, Joe!
Any reference to Jar Jar Binks in your username there?
I'm amused by you writing your post in your Intro to C Programming class. Maybe it should be called Intro to Forums? :P

Hello, Mournblade94!
Have you played all of the ES games?
23 years? You've been journeying Tamriel for a long time; good idea to take a rest at the Forum Inn.

Welcome to both of you!
I've also added you both to the confirmed users list, so now you can give yourself an avatar.

Thanks Aarah and seagrtgruff. I have not played Red guard, or Battlespire. Daggerfall I never finished but I'm remedying that now.

Thanks for the add and I hope to be able to contribute value to the wiki.

@SeaGtGruff

Yeah, I've been meaning to finish it for a long time, but I've never gotten around to it. I don't have much time nowadays unfortunately.

@Aarah

Not necessarily a Jar Jar Binks reference its actually my first initial followed by the first three letters of my last name, but I'm not surprised that's how people can see it xD. I'm also writing this from my C class, but it's really the only time I have to browse forums because the professor goes too slow for me and after class I'm usually either studying, hanging out with friends, or studying with friends lmao.

I can't wait to get really into these forums because I've always been a fan of the Elder Scrolls games, and from experience uesp is the best resource for them.

Hi. I'm backk! Been very busy posting stories for the fashion magazine I work with + shoots on the side for the makeup internship I'm doing. It's going great so far, learned a lot of new things and the makeup artist lets me do the base makeup which is awesome.

I just saw some Clockwork City news today and it kinda made me wanna come back.

Hey everyone, new guy here. I'm a longtime fan of the Elder Scrolls series, and having been exposed to /r/teslore, I'm also a big fan of the UESP wiki. Cumulatively, I've spent around 1,100 hours playing Elder Scrolls games (rookie numbers, I know) and also quite a bit of time reading game-related texts. In the past few months, I've also developed a hobby of creating TES character profiles, though I've never had an outlet with which to fully experience any of them.

I was drawn to the UESP forums primarily on account of the roleplaying subforum. I get the impression that many of you guys are quite experienced at that sort of thing, so I look forward to reading your posts and perhaps even joining a thread myself someday. :)
