The Skyrim Character Discussion thread

Post by The SheoDovah »

Skyrim has quite a fair amount of characters but not all are worthy of their own thread. Thus this thread will allow any NPCs to be discusssed. From Saadia to Delphine. From the lowest guard to the highest Noble. Oh and Nazeem. If ye fancy discussing a character, this is the thread for you!

I find Delphine to be the worst character in Skyrim because of how flat she is. Just consists of condensing and using stupid reasoning that the Thalmor are behind dragons. If the Thalmor had dragns, the civil war wouldn't be needed for their plans. Just raze Skyrim to the ground, head to the Winchester and wait it out for the next part of the plan. How did she ever get into Windcaller's tomb is a bit of a plothole and well, her involvement in the main quest doesn't really matter. I mean, take out Diplomatic Immunity-Alduin's Wall, the plot would still follow the same wall and there's many other ways to get introduced to ol' Parthy.

Oh and she has the arrgoance to demand Paarthurnax's death when he saved the Nords from failure in the Dragon wars. Then decides that the Blades will not serve the Dragonborn unless Paarthy is dead.

Imagine the conversation between Jaree-Ra and Captain Hargar, shortly before things get interesting.

"So, let me get this straight: you hired someone right off the street, clad in fancy armor and armed to the teeth to go and shut down the lighthouse, then decided to betray this person rather than pay them off with a meager share?"

"Yes! I thought I was being economical."

"Economical? Can ya' spell the word? Do you know what it means? Because if you think you do, and you think that's what you are, you have even less brains that I gave you credit for. Did you ask around about this person? How much magic they know? What they do for a living? If they have any angry friends to call upon? You could've just ticked off one of the Companions or a Stormcloak spy! What if they come barging in with daedra and mercenaries, seeking revenge because you wanted to scrimp on a few brass coins?"

Baurus: Our job is to get the Emperor out of situations like this. Though I'll admit, things aren't going exactly to plan.

Casandra: At the moment, the deadliest weapon at my disposal is a goblin's head on a stick. I'd be worried if this was the plan.

My anger toward Delphine knows no bounds. She rubbed me the wrong way when I first met her after (trying) to retrieve the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller and her patronizing me as "possibly" being the Dragonborn. I mean, my character (nor myself as a player) thought too much of being Dragonborn at the time, but I was still miffed at her doubt of my abilities. And Esbern is totally useless. They both talk about their "oath" as Blades but their stubbornness about not helping the Dragonborn until Paarthurnax is dead just seems so ignorant of what the Blades actually stood for. (As far as I know; I don't know much about them besides their role in ES IV.) I will never, ever, ever kill Paarthurnax, not just because he's awesome but because it would "help" the stupid Blades, and based solely off of Delphine and Esbern, they suck.

All right. I could pick on anyone from the Legion all day long, but let's roast Hadvar right now.

I'll address the mammoth in the room first; his damned fake accent. What the actual hell is up with that? He just pulls it out of thin air like he's trying to impress everyone with his mad skills. Was he supposed to sound like that all the time or did they just tell him to try doing something else and couldn't be bothered to have him do all of the lines over again in his normal voice after they realized it was crap? This alone makes him a laughing stock of a character, but wait, there's more.

He doesn't have a single objection to you being wrongfully executed! "Hey, you're not on the list. Duh, what should we do, cap'n? Kill 'em? This random person who nobody knows and hasn't done anything wrong and could very well be just an innocent bystander? SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!" He has the opportunity to do something right, but he's either too simple-minded or afraid to say something, anything against his...[censored]bag captain's evil intent.

Then, ho, he tries to get you on his side. Things suddenly turn sour for him and he instantaneously goes from "I'm sorry, sucker" to "stick close to me!" Do you know why? He's just trying to look after himself! That's what it is. That's all it ever is. He won't stand up for you because he's afraid of disagreeing with his...[censored]bag captain. He wants you to follow him because he knows he needs help to survive the dragon attack. Then, once he's "helped" you escape, he buddies up to you to try to get on your good side as recompense for allowing you to be executed. Everything he does is just to keep his sorry hide safe. It's all about Hadvar. He's the Captain Qwark of Skyrim with none of the comedic relief or redemption and all of the self-centered jerkwad.

All of this makes his status as a Legionnaire somehow his least offensive trait, and that's saying a lot. He is true scum.
Big raims, big taims.

Yeah, hiring someone that eats dragons for a living, Thane of many holds, vanquisher of an undead ghost queen and wears bones of a dragon is quite a bad idea, Jaree. I'm surprised the guards don't arrest him due to there being little to no privacy in discussing it. "Don't mind us, we're merely discussing criminal stuff." That said, if it was the Imperial Guards from Oblivion, both the Dovahkiin and the Argonian would be met with the forbidden shout. "STOP. RIGHT. THERE. CRIMINAL. SCUM." Though bandits do have low iq so perhaps it was meant to be that way? I don't know. Jaree seems to believe that he can kill the one person that wiped out his gang, his entire gang's hideout, killed every single bandit for a mere 100 septims. Better hope that the killcams are on your side. ;)

Regarding Delphine, She seems to be a character that was put in to give us a paranoid about thalmor narrative. They failed to do that. It's just a mixture of "Riiight, Thalmor." and "really? I am doing that because you think the Thalmor are behind dragons?" I mean, come on, Delphine. If the Thalmor had dragons, the civil war would be over in seconds, Skyrim would burn and the Great war would resume. Ulfric Stormcloak is a far better character and he does the Thalmor hating better. He loathes them and has experienced torture at their hands but he knows the legends and doesn't even consider that to be a possibility. Delphine? "I'm telling ya, it's the Thalmor." And Paarthurnax. Really? Really, Delphine? You want me to kill the only Dov that is helping me. The only dov that has maintained a constant watch at the Throat of the World for the return of Alduin and the one who taught the ancient nords how to use the Thu'um thus giving them a way to fight back? Really?

Hmm.... Blades or The friendly old mentor? I'll think i'll say no. For all their spiel about serving the Dragonborn, funny how that they refuse because of one thing. Esbern is an alright bloke and doesn't seem to be fuelled by Thalmr paranoia. Diplomatic Immunity-Alduin wall's is really just Delphine's power trip. Oh and Delphine? You know that you said that fighting is a bad idea. Well, yeaah. I kinda slaughtered the entire Embassy's guard force. No danger of the dossiers being lost there. Hmmm..... Two characters named Delphine in two different franchises and both are crap. I just realised that now(though I could be mistaking the HP:Cursed Child one for a similar name).

I think, with Hadvar, he can't disobey his superiors and I could see him being the type who doesn't object when he knows he doesn't have a chance. The Imperial captain and Tullius deciding it may have been something he knew not to protest. The accent, i've not really noticed before. He does seem to want to help the Dovahkiin when he could have ignored them. During Helgen, he flat out tells them to follow him and potentially cuts their bindings. I don't think he is the type to cover his hide. He could have easily done more to appease the Dovahkiin if that were the case imo.

Nice post! I never thought about it from that angle, so it was enlightening. Entertainingly written, too. But I don't think Hadvar's so bad at heart. I mean, what choice does he really have in the list situation? And at least he's properly grateful after you've assisted him inside the keep. When I played through the civil war, I was even glad to see him whenever he appeared, since he became a war buddy for my character. But yeah, maybe not the most heroic guy.

Yeah, the Paarthurnax thing is very unreasonable. And she's certainly quite unsympathetic, so I don't really like her either. But I've always thought about her flaws as products of her life as a fugitive. I mean, she has had to be paranoid and had to use people as tools for so long it's no wonder she's so irascible and manipulative. So I don't hate her either. Still, Bethesda should have written her a tiny bit softer, because she definitely can get on one's nerves.

Ulfric I can't really stand, though. There's something so incredibly smug in him that he hits the wrong nerve. Even his voice is this annoying, self-satisfied drawl. He's the biggest reason none of my characters have fought on the Stormcloak side.

Belethor's one of my favourites. He's so delightfully slimy I can't help liking the guy. And the dialogue just nails the whole used-car salesman vibe: "Remember, I'll give you the best deals or die trying!"

Braith in Whiterun reminds me of the kids in school who used to pick on me. True, they weren’t just doing it because they didn’t know how to ask for a kiss, but still...
Serana, you’re nice and it’s fun hanging out with you, but you need to be quieter. Sure, I usually have it so my characters can one-shot a bandit or something from several yards away, but man you talk too much girl!
And about the guy who runs the Dawnguard... show me on the mannequin where the bad vampire hurt you. Dude, I’ve been cured! Why are you still sending your pals after me?
Reality is but an illusion, an artificial construct created by those who take the world much too seriously.
