"Thank you, for everything." said Sophia clutching the rifle. Rick knew the rifle used to belong to Bo, the Chinese scout he had murdered. But now he was passing the weapon on to someone else, someone ignorant of its past. "I know you're planning to leave but, if you get out of the commune, drop by the camp before you do."

Bravo team crafted a stretcher which they used to carry Anderson down to the logging camp. Joey was led down, his arms still bound and put with the rest of the prisoners. The group stayed there for a few hours, tending to the wounded, scouring the camp for supplies and any more raiders who could still be in hiding. Eventually Rick, Grace, Luke, Chris and Lester departed, making their way to the Elk Lake Commune on foot, taking the road on the north side of Elk Lake.
---
Dénouement
Elk Lake Commune.

After returning to the Elk Lake Commune preparations were made for Rick's trial. The commune had been fortunate compared to Camp Elk Lake, only a couple of people had died due to New Plague. However among them was June Dunn, the elderly Citizen's Council member and as Rick was aware, a former member of the FLC. Rick's weapons were confiscated, Rick was kept in holding and chairs were set up in the Town Hall to hold an audience of several dozen people. On the far end of the cabin was a desk behind which Yisheng would sit, severing as judge. On one side of the desk was a chair for witnesses, on the other a chair for the prosecutor. A meter in front of the desk sitting in the open facing the desk was a chair for the defendant. Rick didn't have a lawyer, instead he'd be offering his own defense. A few meters behind that chair were rows of seats for the audience. Rick's traveling companions all sat in the front row of the audience, they could whisper to each other but were instructed not to interrupt the trial. While Ming Xiao was still in the clinic, many familiar faces were in the audience, Chris's niece and brother among them. Any audience member, including Rick's companions, could be called to testify before the court as a witness.

An hour before the trial Yīshēng explained to Rick how it would work. Field Commander Zhang was serving as prosecutor presenting the case against Rick. The court had no jury, instead all power laid in the hands of the judge, he would decide the verdict and sentence. The trial would begin with Yīshēng reading out the crimes the defendant had been accused of. After that Rick could present an opening statement to the court. After his statement the prosecutor could call a witness to the stand and ask them questions. When the prosecutor finished, Rick could then question the witness. They would then repeat in reverse with Rick being allowed call a witness to question and the prosecutor getting a turn when Rick was done. This would continue until both the defendant and prosecutor elected to rest their case or the judge deemed it appropriate to bring the trial to a close. At that point the prosecutor and defendant could present their closing statements after which Yīshēng would decide a verdict. Finally while Yīshēng didn't say it, the guard for Rick's holding cell implied that if Rick was sentenced to death, the sentence would be carried out immediately by way of gunshot in the courtyard outside the Town Hall. It was up to Rick to either prove his innocence or justify his deeds. And given what he'd done, he knew his life was on the line.

20:00 - Town Hall - The Trial Begins

The audience were growing restless waiting for the trial to begin. However once the clock struck eight the judge and prosecutor entered the cabin in silence and made their way to their respective seats. Yīshēng was carrying a number of folders which he put on the desk. Shortly there after the defendant, Rick, was lead into the court by a guard. His hands were in front of him in cuffs. Rick glanced at his companions as he walked past them and got into his chair.

With everyone now present the trial of Elk Lake Commune vs. Rick was ready to begin. "I know not all of you speak it, but this trial will be held in English for the benefit of the accused. I have collected statements, they will be taken under advisement." said Yīshēng tapping the folders in front of him. "So, let us begin. Rick... uh... Rick, you stand accused of the following:

Sedition against the Citizen's Council. Working as a military commander for the 'Black Cat' organisation and actively attempting to overthrow our government and military.
The murder of two scouts, Comrade Bo and Comrade Tong while they were investigating Vault 115.
The murder of Minister of Defense Tong. Killing him not in self defense during the fighting but rather after he extended an offer of peace and tended your wounds.

While your infection with New Plague has caused death, the court accepts that you were unaware of your condition at the time. Likewise, barring Tong, those killed and injured during the firefight which occurred here are accepted as acts of self defense. As such you are not being charged with any offense in relation to such deaths or injuries. I'd invite the defendant to now present his opening statement to the court in relation to the charges. After his statement, the prosecutor shall make his own statement and call to the stand his first witness." said Yīshēng in an extremely formal manner while remaining seated. It felt unusual given the group's earlier interactions with the man, but this was an entirely different environment, such formalities were to be expected.

"Rick." Yisheng made a gesture with his hand, inviting Rick to stand and address the court.

Here we are, the end game. Once the trial is over it'll be epilogue time.

Hopefully I didn't screw anything up in the post and how the trial is going to work is clear. It took a while and it's late where I am. Y'all in the audience feel free to talk among yourselves.
So we have come to solve every squabble in the village personally?

His face wore the serious expression one would expect of someone in his position--Rick knew full well the gravity of the situation he faced. He braced himself as he prepared to address those gathered.

"I don't deny any of the charges being brought against me today, save one--I had no intention of overthrowing your government or military. To all others, I admit my guilt. I've taken the lives of people you knew, respected, maybe loved. I had my reasons for doing so, right or wrong as they may have been--I didn't do so lightly, and didn't take pleasure in doing so. ...Apologies won't change anything. They might sting more than help, so soon after all this. But I am sorry for what I've done."

"I don't ask for mercy. I don't ask for forgiveness. I just hope that...whatever comes of this trial, means Elk Lake can start to heal from all that's happened."

Dozens of voices in the audience broke out when Rick admitted his guilt, people were talking among themselves or yelling expletives and calling for Rick's head. "Quiet, quiet." said Yīshēng. He looked at Field Commander Zhang once the crowd settled down. "Prosecutor."

Zhang nodded and got to his feet. He started walking back and forth in front of Rick. "I was going to talk through his crimes, lay out the evidence, call on witness testimony but... he admits it. He admitted it. This man murdered three of our close friends and comrades. Three." said Zhang, he held up three fingers for a couple of seconds before putting them back down. "And he admits it. What exactly he was plotting as a Black Cat commander, if it was or wasn't sedition, that matters little in the face of his other crimes." Zhang stopped in front of Rick and stared the defendant in the eyes.

"So, I'd like the ask the defendant this. Will we just skip straight to the sentencing?"

Rick met Zhang's stare with his own, hard and focused. "No."

"Your people deserve to know--YOU deserve to know why. Get out of your own way." He narrowed his eyes at the prosecutor--Rick's arrival in Elk Lake had him leading a group of cattle. The man wasn't about to be walked off and killed like one. Not easily.

"Call your first witness."

Zhang ran his tongue over his upper teeth and smirked. "Fine." said Zhang in a tone low enough that only Rick could hear.

"The prosecution calls Christopher Guttenberg to the stand!" Zhang exclaimed loudly. Chris got out of his seat and made his way to the chair for witnesses. He sat down and prepared for the questioning. The entire audience was looking directly at him, something Chris couldn't help but notice. Zhang took his place about a meter in front of Chris and started his questioning.

"Now Chris, you traveled with Rick to Elk Lake. And you were with him at Vault 115 when Tong and Bo were scouting the area. Before Rick said Lodds, a mutual companion of yours was responsible for their deaths. A man who, much like the commander of Vault Security, met his end by Rick's hands before he could testify. But now Rick admits it was him." said Zhang as a preamble. "Do you care to explain what happened that day? How exactly Bo and Tong died?"

Despite the current scenario being entirely different to the gun-toting action of the last few days, sitting on the chair in front of the crowd, being questioned by Zhang, felt just as tense.

Chris sat with his hands resting on his lap, as he listened intently to what Zhang was saying.
He licked his lips and swallowed.

"Yeah. Err...well..." He let out a puff of air and fixed his gaze as he tried to remember everything that had happened on the day in question.

"We were going back towards Vault 115. Riel had sent us to...get some parts for him. Err...we got near the vault and then we saw a guy at a cabin that's there. He was shouting so we took cover."
Chris paused for a moment, then resumed the story with more intensity, moving his hands expressively.
"Next thing, Lodds started shouting about getting revenge; he went crazy and just started shooting at Tong. Err, Tong was the guy at the cabin I just mentioned, sorry."

"I'm not a hundred percent what happened next cos I ducked for cover, but...when all the shooting stopped, Tong was lying in front of the cabin bleeding. I went to help. He'd been shot twice, once in the chest and one in the back. Rick and Lodds and I carried him to the vault to get help. Bo had run ahead to do the same."

Chris stopped talking and looked at Zhang for confirmation that he was doing okay.

Zhang nodded, he'd been scratching his beard as Chris while talking but stopped to ask the doctor to continue. "And what happened once you got inside?"

Grace was very concerned about her vault's future and was dreading her return to it. She felt she would either return to find out their freedom had been stripped and everyone was condemmed to be a prisoner or return to find out everyone had been kicked out with no regards to their well being. She knew she was being a bit paranoid but the past few days had been quite stressful for her and was very quiet during the journey to the Chinese camp.

She listened to Rick's words but held her tongue. She didn't accept the apology due to how he acted in the vault. How he assumed direct control as if it was his sole right to dicate the future and acted as judge, jury and executioner.

Chris continued his account.

"Tong went to be treated by Tooms, the doctor there, and then the chief of security, Franklin, and Rick were talking about Lodds."
He made a fleeting glance at Rick, then turned back to Zhang.
"Rick wanted to kill him, Lodds, I mean, but after a bit of talk it was decided he would be locked up in a cell instead."
"Anyway, I went to see if Tooms needed a hand and then then a couple minutes later I hear a commotion and I go back into the corridor to see Rick and Franklin tackling Bo to the ground. Rick had stabbed him in the neck...and then he was dead."

A slight pause followed as more thoughts were recollected.
"So then Rick starts to head to the clinic to dispense of Tong too. No waiting to see if he even would make it. Franklin was all for killing him too. Me, Lester and Tooms were all trying to stop it from happening; Rick said that it had to happen because Bo and Tong would come back here and report what had happened that day; about the shooting, about the vault. He said you would come back and take the vault, or kill everyone there. He said he was doing it for the good of the vault. And despite our reasonings, pleas, other options, Tong got shot."

"I'm sorry that happened to you." said Zhang in a compassionate tone. He turned to address the court. "We can recognize it was a difficult situation Rick found himself in. An unstable subordinate opened fire wounding one of our own. He didn't know at the time that the people he was defending sought to turn our home into a graveyard. He knew nothing of our intentions or that Christopher's very own brother is a member of our Citizen's Council." Zhang glanced at Rick for a second before he continued speaking. "I don't think it was personal or some hatred against mutants. Rick was just doing what he thought was right, he would have done this to any of us. And there in lies the problem, he'd do this to any of us. We all saw that when he killed Tong. If I'd been part of that scouting party, I wouldn't be here today. Rick didn't know anything about us and didn't look to find out. Instead he killed two of our friends because, well, because it was easier for him. And have no doubt he'll do it again. Either with those anarchist insurgents who want to burn our homes or in some other town far away from here." said Zhang. "I have no doubt Rick thinks himself a good man who does what's right. But you know what they say, give a good man firepower and he'll never run out of people to kill."

Zhang turned to question Chris once more. "Just so we're clear, before I hand you over to the defendant. Rick didn't want to detain our men like he did this Lodds or anything like that. Instead he stabbed Bo to death and then shot a wounded man as he was being treated on an operating table. Is that correct?"

"Yes. I suggested holding Tong instead but he thought it was too risky. Tong could escape and maybe kill vault dwellers in the process."

"Thank you." said Zhang with a nod. He made his way back to his chair. "No more questions."

Yīshēng coughed. "Okay um, Rick, if you'd like to question the witness you can do so now." said the Judge.

Rick stood up to address Chris, but didn't approach him.

"When we first came to Elk Lake, we almost died. Despite what they'd secretly done to us...all we'd known is that they'd saved our lives from the Restless Dead. That was a debt I wanted to repay. They said they wanted us to make contact with the locals outside their Vault, see if they'd be open to trading and cooperation."

"Do you remember what Bo said he'd do, if Tong died on the operating table?"

Chris shifted in his seat. The questioning made him uncomfortable, especially in front of an audience.

"Err...I think I remember him saying to Lodds that he'd kill him. He was pretty angry with him, understandably."

After listening to Chris recount Bo's words, Rick nodded in agreement. "He promised revenge. Understandable. --I thought...he might take revenge on more than just Lodds, or the other one who'd fired on Tong." Rick said, referring to the other 'Rick' that had briefly traveled with them. "I saw people who I owed my life to, and someone had just put blood on their hands. I wanted to keep their hands clean, and not have Elk Lake see them as killers. ...I was wrong. I know that now. Blood doesn't wash out blood."

Rick stared at the ground for a moment as he pondered his own words, before speaking again. "I don't have anymore questions for you, Chris. ...But thanks for trying to just do the right thing, all this time." He sat back down in his chair.

I'm a dead man.

Chris gave a sombre nod of acknowledgement to Rick and then returned to his seat in the front row of the crowd.
His eyes looked heavy, weighed down by all the mixed emotions he was feeling.
Rick had done inexcusable things, killed unnecessarily, but he'd also done good things, he had risked his own safety to help others.
Chris found the juxtaposition of these actions hard to comprehend.
He couldn't fathom Rick out. Deep down, the Canadian seemed like a good man, but one that had lost his way. Perhaps another victim of the psychological turmoil of this post-apocalyptic world.

"Doctor Lucas." Rick called, looking at his on-and-off travelling companion.

After waiting for the Doctor to assume his seat, Rick went straight to his questioning. "Could you tell everyone your perspective on the gunfight that happened here at the Commune, from when you showed up, onwards?"

Luke took a deep breath and rose to his feet, making his way around to the seat in which the witnesses were being questioned. Luke was tense much akin to Chris, internally torn between his feelings on the matter. He resolved to stick to the truth of things as he preferred, and would address the subjective morality of the situation later.

"Well, Richard..." the doctor began, going over the account step-by-step in his head as he spoke. "We arrived at the commune as we had done earlier with the American camp, as we had been prompted by the Vault's overseer under the mislead pretense of investigating the local factions for their benefit. Chairwoman Xiao instructed us to search for the lost scouts, including Minister Tong's brother, telling us that there was a fracturing in leadership and that a lost brother might be grounds for a coup on Tong's part if they were lost to the Americans as suspected. You... all know how that went, in no small part due to Lodds' recklessness."

He realized he was starting very early in relation to the event he was questioned in, and went forward in timeline as to not hold the court up indefinitely. "I had gone to assist the doctors in the commune with a first-aid lesson while some of the others departed to search for the scouts; when I left after completing the lesson, I came across the dispute with Minister Tong. I tried to help talk him down from his course of action, but it did... not go well. Conflict erupted and one of them... 'Tu', I believe, shot Xiao as she made an approach towards Tong. I don't recall much of the fight itself, but I do recall Tong asking those supporting him to cease their fire."

Luke remembered his actions, or lack thereof, during the firefight, and heaved another sigh before continuing. "Everything was finished as soon as it had began. I moved to bring Chairwoman Xiao into surgery with the help of both Chris G. and Chris X., but as we moved Rick - that is to say... you - pulled a pistol on Tong and fired on him, killing him after a few shots. I knew the two of you spoke prior to this act; you must have, given that he had injected you with a stimpak to treat your injuries; but with the chaos of a post-gunfight lingering about and a dying woman with child on my hands, I was not in a position to hear. I would assume you did so to eliminate a potential source of strain in the commune, given that Xiao was the more tolerant of the Americans, but..." he spoke, leaving the sentence to trail off to avoid getting overly speculative with his testimony.

With one final, pensive breath, Luke intertwined his fingers and looked up at those gathered. "You left the commune after this while you could, myself and Doctor Ho managed to save Chairwoman Xiao, and... that was when we played the tapes from the vault to learn about Limit 115... New Plague, the work of Doctor Tooms. You were gone by then and we had to tell you later on."

Luke looked to Rick and Yīshēng. "That's all I remember; as he asked, from my perspective."

Rick nodded and gestured to Lucas, feeling somewhat vindicated by the grim retelling of recent events--as much wrong as Rick had done, there was still plenty that had gone around.

"The first shot fired by a man under Tong's command--the result of his direct attempt to overthrow your community--and they shoot a pregnant woman, one of your leaders. That one..." Rick's lip quivered for the briefest of moments. "That one was a little too close to home for me. I've seen some terrible things, and done some terrible things, but that..."

He took a moment to recover his composure, before continuing.

"One more question--we haven't been here in Elk Lake long, have we? We came here as part of a caravan out of Samson's Bay, is that right?" Rick waited for affirmation from Luke for a moment. "Question all the people you must, but I haven't been in this area long. Not long enough to plot against this Commune, and that was never my intention. I tried to talk it out with Minister Tong. I tried to help Chairwoman Xiao. I..."

Rick hesitated, not wanting to lose himself in a heated moment. "No further questions for you. ...Thank you, Doctor."

"Leave my wife out of this you sick [&@%!]! Acting like you were doing us a favor, like we'd want you to kill him!" Sebastian shouted getting to his feet. "Sebastian, please." said Yisheng. But the teacher shook his head and kept talking. "No! Tu shot Ming. Tong was wrong but he stood down, then when he was treating your wounds, you murdered him. You know who caused that standoff? You did, by killing our scouts then lying about it. You were too much of a coward to face up to what you did. So you lied and you did it to save yourself. It was your fault! You're the reason my wife got shot, the reason I got shot! You killed Tong to make yourself feel better, like his blood could wash away the guilt. Then you ran before you had to face the consequences." Chris Xiao looked up at her father. "Dad." said Chris pulling at his sleeve. Sebastian sat down, his outburst seemingly over.

Zhang exhaled a burst of air. "I'm happy to make our final statements if you are Rick." said Zhang remaining seated.

Luke stirred for a moment, and then stood from the seat which he had returned to. "Your honor - Field Commander Zhang, wait. With your permission, I would like to address the court and those gathered." he requested in a kind yet firm tone, hoping to be granted a platform for what he had longed to say since he stepped foot in the reaches of Elk Lake.
