Oblivion Crashes (Windows 10)

Post by AddictedtoMorrowind »

Does anyone have experience playing Oblivion on Steam with Windows 10? On all other OS's it seems to run fine, but on my Windows 10 laptop it crashes immediately on startup. I've tried a whole bunch of fixes including compatibility tweaking, verifying game files, reinstalling, etc. but I can't seem to get it to work.

Many of my other Steam games have the crashing issue, and I can usually get it working, but I can't seem to get Oblivion to successfully play. Any ideas?

Before upgrading to Windows 10, Oblivion ran with lots of mods.
Now, not so much. :x

I never did get the Steam Oblivion/Windows 10 combination to work reliably.
I had to use disks from different releases ( Oblivion, the Shivering Isles expansion pack and Knights of the Nine DLC Collection ) to get it working.
And use the Oblivion Mod Manager vice NMM to install mods. :S

Sometime in the future, Windows 10 will auto-upgrade to the newest version of Windows that only plays games sold through the Micro$oft store.

Good luck.

Yeah, it seems like Windows 10 really messed up gaming and Steam. I'm kinda disappointed cause I was hoping to get into Oblivion and Skyrim over the summer but now it looks like I won't be able to.

Well, looks like I'll just continue Morrowind for the time being.

Windows 10 makes a lot of older games a total ass to run. My first suggestion is to try launching it through compatibility mode. I'm not sure which one is best, but I have a lot of luck with compatibility for Windows XP service pack 3 and Windows Vista.

Beyond that, there are a TON of potential culprits; driver issues, missing DLL files, something messing up with DirectX... My suggestion is to contact steam support and hope that you get some help.

@Dalos A little, and it's inconsistent. Sometimes I can play with the compatibility and get it to launch, other times it crashes. Oblivion is a whole other story though.
@Unionhack Yeah, I've tried several variations and none of them worked very well. I'll send a ticket to Steam Support, so hopefully I'll get some help.

It's interesting that I can stably run Morrowind with MGSO and a whole bunch of other mods but not vanilla Oblivion or Skyrim consistently.

Morrowind is also a lot less complicated. Mechanically speaking. That sweet spot of like mid-2000's games can be the worst to run, at least in my experience.

@ Addicted My Skyrim is a little quirky. It sometimes fails to launch or crashes within the first 20 minutes of launch, but relaunch works and it'll run stably.

About 2 years ago MSGO stopped working for me. It crashed when I selected RELOAD with my old game and after a fresh install when NEW was selected.
I tried all kinds of things, that didn't work, to get it running.
I still don't know what was/is wrong with my installation that MSGO won't run.

This spring I did get Morrowind running with the plugins, replacers and MGE XE to look good.
Now it doesn't look like something's missing without MSGO installed.

I've been running Windows 10 since it was first released, and haven't had any problems with Oblivion that are specific to Windows 10. Oblivion has given me problems from time to time even way back when I was playing the PC (non-Steam) version under Windows XP.

One problem I've been running into lately is that sometimes a saved game won't load-- Oblivion will freeze before it finishes loading the saved game, and I must shut it down with the Task Manager. From what I've read online, it's my understanding this is something to do with the Shivering Isles expansion. In fact, for a long time during my current game I avoided going to the Shivering Isles while I focused on completing the various guild quests, and I don't think I had the freeze-up problem at all. But when I finally went to the Shivering Isles, I started getting issues like animations that freeze (torches don't flicker, doors don't open, etc.), and saved games that freeze when they're being loaded. If I'm lucky, the problematic saved game will load successfully if I switch from my laptop to my desktop computer, or vice versa-- but usually that doesn't help, and my only recourse is to load an older saved game, usually the last auto-save.

Odd. I’ve never had problems with Steam running Oblivion on my laptop with Windows 10. It’s a perfectly ordinary, mentally ill HP with no enhancements. (It won’t run Fallout 3 though.)
Reality is but an illusion, an artificial construct created by those who take the world much too seriously.
