Yarrow Run

Post by MARS »

Yarrow Run. Practically no one knows where it is. If you were to ask in the surrounding towns maybe, but nobody in Seattle or any other part of America could tell you where it is. This is where you are headed.

It's a small town, right in the woodlands of Washington state, and you're being sent here to be hidden away, it feels. When you're bound to an institution called "Boarding Academy for Special Cases on Little Hill", you can't help but think that.

Despite what you may think, this town holds far, far more than what you would imagine. Strange things are happening, and have been happening for as long as your schoolmates can remember. When the sun goes down, the facade of the sleepy little provincial outback cracks and you can catch a glimpse at the real strangeness that it holds.

You are a social outcast, on account of the weird things that keep on happening around you. For a lack of a better term, a "special case", according to the Little Hill Academy is someone with psychic powers like yours. They manifest differently, and uniquely, for everyone. There may be similarities, but no one's power manifests in the same way.

Your circumstances have brought you here. Either your parents wanted to tuck you away somewhere, you were an orphan who was sent here; whichever way, you are on a bus along with another few youths of your age, bound for Yarrow Run.

This is an RP focused on its characters and the stories of the town: its residents from the ostracized Pastor, to the drug dealer on the edge of town, your schoolmates who are just as alienated as you, and everyone in between. The mystery blends in with the relationships and dynamics between the characters amongst each other, and you are here to bring a fresh spark to these happenstances. As you try to cope with your lot in life, what's happening around you won't give you a break.

Setting

The RP is set vaguely in the present day, think somewhere between 2013-17. You will be introduced to the town's structure and daily life in the Academy during the RP. Navigation is largely free for you to choose on your own perogative, in the school, town, and story.

The general premise is uncovering the mysteries of the town while dealing with your own issues, and the drama surrounding the other characters. You shape the story just as much as it affects you. In fact, the player characters will become essential to it.

Characters

There isn't really a sheet. I'll want a name, age (with birthday please), background, the usual stuff. It'd be great if you share as much as possible with me about your character, so that I can work in as much personal stuff into the story as possible. You can apply by PM, in the thread, or both. Obviously I won't disclose anything you don't want me to publicly. There will be no RNG involved, so there are no stats.

On the note of psychic powers, there are only a few rules:
  • One power per person
  • No powers that give you other powers (synnergies are okay but will be controlled by me to an extent)
  • There need to be nuances in it. No flat out "telekenisis" with no strings attached, for example. Either it only works under specific circumstances and/or has limitations or gimmicks. If you're unsure, ask me. That said, this isn't a "power lock". You can be as potentially OP as you want, but there needs to be an angle I can exploit to make the narrative work.
Naturally I'm looking most forward to creative and interesting characters, with powers to match.

I think that about covers anything of interest, though of course I'll answer any questions and add more info on demand. I'm thinking to start sometime in June after I've finished essential prep work. There is no character limit, though I'd like to keep it small. I'm looking forward to all of you!

Oh, and the RP Rules of course.
  • Don't be a dick.
  • That means don't godmod.
  • I reserve the right to kill characters.
  • Be nice to each other.
  • Have fun.

:
Name: David ‘Davie’ Schaer

Sex: F

Gender: F

Age: 16, dob: October 31st.

Power: As a Clairvoyant, Davie is capable of feeling the auras of those around her but within a relatively short radius. This limitation is more of a blessing than anything, crowds overwhelm her and, forced to reckon with an expanded sense of her power, she’d probably be driven mad.

Physical Appearance: Davie’s unfashionably mid-length cut frames a set of delicate features: a soft chin, a nose just a tad too far to the right, and slender red lips which irregularly part in a sort-of lopsided smile. Epicanthic folds betray a mixed heritage which wouldn’t appear immediately obvious from the almost-blonde shade her hair takes on, nor the off-hazel of her eyes - a fact that always made it difficult identifying with the other Asian-American kids at school, or them her. She has her acne under control, except where she doesn’t. Whilst some godawful expensive treatment have helped to remove it from her face, it remains stubbornly clung to the back of her neck and upper back.
She possesses of a slender, narrow frame, though is about average height for a young woman. Unassuming in physicality it wouldn’t be difficult to miss her in a crowd - or, well, anywhere. The reservedness of her character makes it all too easy for her to fade into the background. Frequently she is dressed in denim jeans and hoodies and converse; sometimes she’ll wear a denim skirt, but her wardrobe isn’t exactly what one might consider an article of high fashion. On a note of trivia, one foot is three-quarters of a size larger than the other, though she gets her shoes specifically fitted and it’s never noticed.

Biography: Davie’s father, a successful security-tech entrepreneur turned venture capitalist, and her mother, a prominent researcher in the field of immunotherapy, both credit their fortunes to a preparedness and strictness of planning that kept them ahead of the curve. So when asked if they wanted to know the baby’s sex, the question hadn’t fully left the doctor’s mouth when she’d received the answer: yes. Unfortunately, neither realised that the doctor had gotten it wrong until the bedroom was painted blue, a rack of similarly coloured baby clothes were bought with the size ranging up to 12 months, and the first-time parents, after a great deal of wrangling, had finally agreed on a name they both liked, David. Oh, yeah, and the baby was born.
The name stuck - during the arduous process which was deciding on another more sex-appropriate name they got used to the first one - and Davie, as she prefers to be known, has wanted to change it basically since she’s been conscious.
Because let’s just say it didn’t help her make too many friends. The entire class laughed when it was called out in the roll call on the first day of school, and even the teacher seemed amused. Kids grow up, but they never seemed to forget that first introduction. But exceptionally bright, things became easier when she was ‘accelerated’, skipping a grade two years in a row. By then, however, she’d been excluded from enough social convention that the idea of being popular didn’t even enter her domain of understanding. Whilst she was more successful at connecting with those in her new class, she nevertheless remained a bit of a loner.
Davie grew into her personality during her teenage years. Spending most of her time alone, and plugged into her computer, she developed an aptitude for all things tech-related. Her father had impressed on her an interest in computer programming and Summer’s alone at home gave her the time to develop that craft. She’s since developed sufficient cybersecurity skills to at least seem to know what she’s talking about. However, her latest interest is machine vision - getting the computer to recognise patterns and objects. She hopes to someday build an intelligent robot. Beyond this she has an interest in Korean Action Flicks, Folk Music, and Libertarian Politics (#RestoreAmericaNow) and contributes to a number of web-based forums on the subjects. Her best friends are probably on the internet - people there are weird like her.
That she’s being shipped off to somewhere with questionable chances of a stable broadband connection has devastated her to some extent. But altogether it’s for the best. Living in the densities of upper Washington state was crippling her and as her powers grew, it got worse. Least here she has some chance of getting help.

Family and Friends:
Spoiler:
Name: Mr. Patrick Schaer
Releationship: Father
Age: 54
Background: Patrick made it big in the 1990s developing security software, first as an in-house for a then-major start-up and then as an independent entrepreneur and consultant. Nowadays he does a lot more investing than anything else, bankrolling small, promising tech start-ups, with a specific interest in cybersecurity. Charismatic and light-hearted, if intense around business, him and Davie have always been close. He inspired her interest in computer programming.
Spoiler:
Name: Dr. Kulai Schaer (neé: Qasim)
Releationship: Mother
Age: 55
Background: The daughter of two Uyghur refugees, Kulai demonstrated a keen intelligence from a young age. It was enough to keep her bankrolled in scholarships throughout her education and at age 24 she left UC-Berkley with a PhD, her thesis concerning immunogenetics. She has since gone on to be a major voice in the field of genetic immunotherapy and currently works as a researcher in a Seattle-based lab. Lacking the outgoingness of her husband, it is probably the extent of her similarity with Davie that has stopped them being as close as they might have been.

Anything is possible. Though the sibling would either have to be played by you or someone else, or die and/or leave.

I'm glad you're interested! That makes three.

Velvet's character has received the seal of approval, and is sitting on the bus as we speak.

I'm playing a siblingless orphan so I can't be your sibling, as fun as that would be. I'll be cooking up my character sheet in the next few days.

Oh and in case anyone is worried about doubling up on powers and wants to know what I'm doing, basically it's immunity to fire and by extension harmful heat, getting burned, smoke, carbon monoxide, etc.

Come on, let's have an all girl party!

Oh, this sounds like such fun! I'd very much like to join. I shall start creating a character and improving my rp skills as soon as possible.

If no-one else wants to be your sibling, I would happily play the part, Aarah.

This is probably no surprise to anyone, but freaky twins are already on the list of NPCs. You could argue they're sort of up there with the PCs in protagonist category. Don't let that discourage you from making more, though.

^Two sets of freaky twins would be really...freaky. And kinda spooky!

Does a person's psychic powers occur from birth, or do they become evident spontaneously at anytime, a la X-Men?

Any way you want it, that's the way you need it. (It's different for everyone). (It also depends on whether the power is active or passive. An active power would take a lot longer to learn how to use deliberately.)

This kinda reminds me of Hope Falls.

We do not talk about Dovah's RPing from there unless you want to be narrated for the rest of your lives. :P

But am I right in assuming that it'll be just as focused on the PCs with the plot occuring in the background until it is ramped into gear?

Oh and I'm gonna to say that I am up for this but as a provisional statement. Just in case Life grabs me, forces me to eat lemons and makes me mad but can't counter it with combustible lemons.

In a few weeks time, I'll make a judgement call about whether I am in properly or not. That and will go back to basics with a simple character. May just do a college student that erm.... yeah, just a college student or something that is fairly easy to er..... i'm not going to say BS my way through but erm.... yeah, BS my way through with the occupation/profession/Other.

Re: Kerr's Yarrow Run Character - June "J.D" Diaz

Post by Kerr »

Here's my character June "J.D" Diaz
Hidden:
Name: June "J.D" Diaz

Age: 18
DOB: 12th August

Gender/Sexuality: Bi Cis Woman

Appearance:
Spoiler:
Image
Medium length hair dyed red (naturally blond) and worn loose. Grey eyes. 5ft 5in. Average weight and musculature, large bust and average physical ability. Calluses on her hands from playing guitar.

She has a black rose tattooed on her upper left chest. Has a single right eyebrow stud which is black.
Spoiler:
Image

Dress Sense: Like most people, J.D wears a variety of outfits. But her favorite pieces of clothing are a black patrol cap which she's rarely seen without, a green military surplus cargo jacket with various patches (of things like band names, quotes, images, etc) sewn onto it and black combat boots. Along with that she usually wears t-shirts and jeans, cargo shorts or a skirt and leggings.

Wears a silver wristwatch and rainbow friendship bracelet on her left wrist basically every day. Makeup wise she wears black eyeliner and black nail polish most days.

Jacket Patches: The following are the patches that adorn June's prized jacket.

Back: Large black patch with pink text and image. "Feminist Killjoys" with a raised fist venus symbol dividing the two words. Feminist Killjoys being a small-time all girl punk band from L.A.
Left Front: Black and white Mischief Brew logo, A red cherry with a stem that's a lit rope fuse, black and white heart with "Keep on Loving, Keep on Fighting" written on the top and bottom respectively.
Right Front: Black and white Bikini Kill record player logo, Dead Kennedys Logo, "If I Can't Dance It's Not My Revolution" black and white quote patch.
Upper Left Sleeve: Black and yellow "Best Bi" parody logo
Upper Right Sleeve: Black and white "it is a mystery" with associated ghost.

Personality/Hobbies/Skills: Passionate, fiery and has a real problem with authority. Struggles with apathy a lot, has a problem applying herself and no idea what she wants to do in life. Also struggles with feelings of isolation, feels lonely moving to Yarrow Run, never really had friends in the institution she grew up in and is now moving away from the friends she had in L.A, unsure what things will be like for them when she returns. Her oftentimes abrasive personality comes in part from a deep sense of morality and anger at an unjust world she feels powerless to change as well as residual hatred for authority figures in her life. Curses like a sailor and drinks alcohol and smokes weed and cigarettes. A romantic at heart, her only previous romantic relationship ended after a few months and pretty poorly for both parties.

She's good at sewing, cooking and first aid, more out of necessity than anything else. She can hold her own in a fight for the same reasons. Has learnt to drive but never really had a car so hasn't applied that skill much.

During her Junior year in High School she was the frontwoman of a mostly punk inspired 4-man rock band that she started with friends called FIRE WALK which had even manged to play a few gigs locally and released an 5 track E.P of original songs on Bandcamp called "Through the Darkness." She's good at both singing and playing guitar. She'd like to better at playing keyboard as she's currently not very good at it.

Loves English, is an A student in the subject in comparison to being C- average in everything else. Her high school didn't have a music class due to budget cuts.

Bio: An L.A Times article dated 23rd October of the year she was born entitled "Miracle Baby Survives Fire!" is where June's story really began. The Diaz family's home in the L.A burned down during the early hours of the morning because of an electrical fire which killed her parents Mary and Peter her 7 year old brother Dillian. Firefighters found baby June crying underneath a piece of charred wood, she'd miraculously survived the fire unscathed, neither flames or smoke harmed her. She's been living in childcare institutions ever since then, never even seriously considered for adoption. The only hierloom of her parents to survive the fire was her mother's wristwatch and that's only because it was at a shop being repaired when the fire broke out.

Had a rather lonely and isolated early childhood but started to make friends and come more into her own when she entered middle school and started what authority figures in her life called a "punk phase." Much like another thing about her which people call a "phase" it doesn't look set anytime soon. She formed a band FIRE WALK with her friends Lisa, Daniel and Daniel's older brother Jake in the summer before her Junior year (and Jake's senior year) of High School. She loved it, they even managed to play a couple of gigs and recorded a 5 track E.P entitled "Through the Darkness" which they released on Bandcamp.

After finishing her Junior year she was completely unsure of what her future would be. She knew she'd have to leave her home when she turned 18 and had a desire to finish high school, but she couldn't crash with friends for a year and would need a job to pay for expenses. It looked like she would have to drop out and find a job but fortunately in July she received a letter from Little Hill Academy in Yarrow Run inviting her to study there for her Senior year with full scholarship. June was unsure at first, not wanting to go to the middle of nowhere and leave all her friends behind, but talking to them about it convinced her that it was the right thing to do. It would only be a year afterall, she really wanted to finish High School and knew she'd regret it is she passed the offer up.

So after June turned 18 she crashed with Jake and Dan for a couple of weeks. Strange as it is to say, it was probably the best couple of weeks of her life, spending time with friends and free of the [&@%!] place she grew up in. Three nights before she left, FIRE WALK played possibly their final show ending the set with a cover of "Closing Time" by Semisonic. Her friends drove her to the bus depo on the day she left, surprising her before she went with the gift of a zippo lighter that had FIRE WALK engraved on it. Tears were shed, hugs were shared and June began her trip to Yarrow Run.

Power: Fireproof, presumably a kind of psychokinesis. Fire and heat don't harm her, they don't even cause pain. She also isn't harmed by the things produced by fire like smoke and carbon monoxide. This presumably effects cigarette smoke but no Journal of Medicine has actually studied June so who really knows?

While she had a couple of incidents during her childhood, like not being hurt by boiling water, it wasn't until High School that June discovered the weird ability she's had since infancy when she started smoking and burning ash from a cigarette didn't hurt her or even leave a mark. With some experimentation she discovered she had some sort of immunity to fire, heat and the things produced by it such as smoke and carbon monoxide. She doesn't use the ability much though it being passive. Mainly it's useful when around smoke, to put cigarettes/joints out on herself when she's alone and doesn't want to reach for a ashtray and hold a lit lighter under her hand to make people think she's a badass.

Key Personal Effects: While not everything she's brought with her, particularly noteworthy are her black rucksack, red canvas wallet, Sir Snuggleton a small teddy bear dressed like an Arthurian Knight she's had since she was 3, a journal which acts as a scrap book of her life including the newspaper article of "Miracle Baby Survives Fire", a guitar and canvas case for it, black smartphone loaded with music and cheap red $5 cornerstone earphones and a grey zippo lighter with FIRE WALK engraved on it that her band mates got as a going away present. Her mother's silver wristwatch which was in the shop being repaired at the time of the fire and rainbow friendship bracelet her best friend Lisa bought her when they were 15.

Other: Speaks with a very strong SoCal accent. Some of her friends call her J.D but she mostly just goes by June.
I decided not to make her an only child because it adds the possibility of creepy ghost kid.

No. Maybe they figured it out. They probably didn't, because it's not marketed that way at all. I might write up a mock brochure so that you can come to your own conclusions for your characters.

I'm going to exploit this reference, oh yes I will.

That's tough to answer. It depends on how it works exactly. If I allow it, it'd need to work a certain way, like say causing bad dizziness, general disorientation, or some other adverse effect. Or it needs to be a destination that can be visualized. Something like that.

BONUS MATERIAL:

I sent Velvet a song I thought suited his character, and unless he disagrees I'll attach it as a character theme. Let me know if you want me to do something similar for yours, or want me to use one of your preference. I want to feature some sparing supplementary 'soundtrack' anyway, so I think it would be fun. I left her recruitment vague but in my head I have it that Davie worked out that the Academy treated people like her and set out to join it. Is that wholly likely or would it be better for them to have found her after she perhaps turned up at a few medical centres citing the symptoms she has (i.e. increasingly crippling headaches around high human densities).

Basically, though she sees her power as akin to an illness so whether she's found treatment, or gets offered it, it's not going to matter to her.

It is possible, just not without extensive autonomous research. It's not a murder academy, some people have actually graduated (or maybe the hints are planted as a failsafe for cases they're not aware of). Either way, what you're describing there fits the bill, so it works.

He wears a black leather band around his right wrist.

Power: Psychic manipulation. Scott has a way of 'charming' the more weak minded, making them more inclined to do what he wants.

Backstory: Scott was born and grew up in Yakima, Washington. He has one brother who is 8 years younger, and a mother who works as a physiotherapist. His father died when he was nine years old.
Always an adventurous boy, Scott was a fairly well-behaved lad until he started high school and began hanging out with friends who were a bad influence on him. It was around this time that he discovered that he could make certain people do things just by verbally asking or telling them to. This power thrilled Scott and he began using it to get 'free' things and make other kids at school do things for him.
His mother became increasingly concerned of his antics. She could see that there was something that wasn't normal about her son.
Worried that he would end up doing something stupid, hurting someone, or worse, she, despite Scott's refusal to leave, took him out of his current school and sent him off to a special school where they could hopefully get answers about his gift, and keep his behaviour in check.

Take your time. The bus doesn't leave until the summer, when it's party time.

Hidden:
Name: Amelie Dupont
Age: 14
Birthday: 18th January
Appearance: 5' 5". She has coppery brown hair that falls to about an inch above her shoulders, with a straight, short, heavy-set fringe.
Her eyes are blue/grey and she likes to enhance them with colourful eyeshadow.
Her face is square shaped, cheeks possessing a few freckles, and a small button nose.
She currently wears braces on her upper teeth, which makes her self-conscious about smiling too broadly.
Amelie's build is average, though she is slimmer on top with fatter legs.
She has an eclectic taste when it comes to clothes. A big fan of the fantasy genre, she loves to wear long skirts and dresses, teamed with accessories such as hip pouches, cord belts, and amulets.
Trousers paired with long, flat boots, and a gilet are another look she favours.

Power: Shield. She can generate a personal forcefield that radiates about an inch from her body. She can also extend the shield to protect her twin sister, if they are touching.

Backstory: Amelie grew up in the countryside with her mother, father and twin sister. She has spent most of her childhood running around with her sister, Willa, in the vast fields and country that surround their lovely home.
She discovered her power at an early age; when out playing she suffered the usual falls and bumps that befall children, but if she knew it was coming, would never get hurt.
Attempts to show her parents what she could do, ended in them becoming frustrated that she was including them in 'just another of her fantasy games' and so it was decided that it would remain her little secret (with only her sister knowing).
She has often been picked on by other students at school, being called a 'nerd' or a 'freak', which has only added to her shy and introverted nature.
Not sharing the quirkiness of their children, Amelie's exasperated parents decided to send her and her sister to a special school where they might 'grow out' of their strangeness.

Personality: Amelie is not as confident as her sister, and will usually follow her lead. She is fairly shy and quiet, unless with Willa, when she will then come out of her shell and be a lot more vibrant and chatty.
She is happier living in her fantasy world, pretending she is an adventurous character in an exciting land, where she feels free to be herself and doesn't feel like an oddity.
Although she likes to see different types of people, Amelie is not concerned about needing to have more friends, quite content to just hang around with her twin.
If she is somewhere new where there are people present, she will be very insecure, especially if alone.
She does not share Willa's obsession with conspiracy theories, but can be easily lead, and so doesn't disagree with them 100%.
She loves to explore places and will create stories in her head as she explores.

Hobbies: Acting, writing, reading, nature, roleplaying, hiking and sewing.

Oh, I meant to post this yesterday. Thanks for reminding me, Aarah.
Hidden:
Name: Willa Dupont
Age: 14
Birthday: January 18

Appearance: Being fraternal twins, Willa looks enough unlike her sister to easily be told apart. She stands at 5'4", with an hourglass-type figure. Her coppery brown hair is worn long and wavy, reaching down to the small of her back and parted in the middle. Her blue-grey eyes are hidden behind a pair of round, gold-rimmed glasses, and her thin lips are most likely smiling, when she's not biting them. Her square jaw and button nose are traits shared with her sister.
Her taste in clothing is inspired by that 60s movement that inspires so much of her life: hippies. Long dresses and peasant blouses with bell-bottoms, with paisley and fringes all over the place. Hoop earrings, beaded necklaces, and braided headbands complete the look.

Power: Thoughtography. Although able to burn images onto a variety of surfaces, the pictures are clearest when burned straight onto undeveloped film.
Due to her close connection to her sister, if burning a picture of Amelie, her surroundings will be evident as well, whether or not Willa is actually aware of where her sister is.

Backstory: Willa grew up in the countryside, along with her twin sister and parents. She spent much of her free time outside, playing make-believe with her sister, Amelie. Due to her active imagination and gullibility, however, these make-believe games didn't always seem so very unrealistic to her. And as such, when she came across a book about conspiracies at the library, she was convinced. From then on, she became quite interested in solving the vast mysteries that seemed to show up everywhere, most noticeably in the government.
Willa discovered her power one morning when she was 8. She had fallen asleep at her desk, after staying up late staring out the window in search of UFOs. When she awoke from her dream-filled slumber, the papers that lay under her hand held a blurry image of the exact alien that had filled her head all night. She ran to wake her parents, who reprimanded her for using the printer without permission and sent her back to bed. After that, she worked with her sister to refine her talent, discovering that, with focus, she could burn images from her mind.
Despite her efforts to keep this power hidden from her parents, they were sufficiently off put by her and her sister's other actions to send them away, in an attempt to "normalize" them.

Personality: Willa is more confident than her Amelie, but isn't necessarily talkative. She's never been very close to anyone other than her sister, and is happy leaving it that way. Curious, imaginative, and gullible, she's always open to new ideas and experiences.
She tries to emulate hippie culture in her daily life, though not for conventional reasons. Convinced that modern society is all part of a grandiose plot by the government (and by extension, aliens), she thinks that people must return to "being human". Her hobbies include playing guitar, sewing, hiking, and acting.
Hopefully everything's all good with my power. If I need to change anything, just say.
If you're happy and you know it clap your hands. *clap clap*
